  1. GEICO paid off my Yamaha, with a little (less than 1K) back to me. I could not find a used RSV anywhere near me. The local dealer wanted 20K for a new one, way out my price range. I wanted a full-dress touring bike with bells/whistles. I am 6'5, 280, so a GW was not going to work (I've tried one). I ended up buying a 2007 HD FLHTCU with 6k miles for 15K. We'll see how this plays out. With it, I got a 5-year unlimited mile warranty, let's hope I use it as often as I used the RSV warranty (never). I'm going to stay on this board, as I have gotten some great tips and tricks from you folks.
  2. Well, I got the call today. $17,000 before labor costs. Needless to say, it's a total. sad day.
  3. Wow...I was away from the board for a day...can't believe all the responses! Thank you all for your kind thoughts. I will try to answer as many questions as I can remember! The crash happened at Wolcott Ave / Franklin Parkway in Castaic, in unincorporated northern LA county. The road makes a 90 degree turn to the north (as you are traveling WB). As I was leaned over, and beginning to accelerate out of the turn, I think my back tire (not stock, but a Dunlop Elite 3) hit some oil. I went back and checked, no sign of gravel or dirt. Just a poor surface appraisal on my part. Insurance company is Geico, they have been fair in the past, I just hope that they DON'T total the bike, I really liked it, it was set up just right...Has every accessory that Yamaha sells in the Star catalog. I'll keep you guys posted, thanks again for the kind words! This father of 4 young boys does NOT need to spending any time in a hospital recovering from stupidity...
  4. I just saw your location. I used to work for United Rentals, and I audited our branches in Regina and Saskatoon the week of 9-11-01. I've neer forgotten the kindness that was shown to an American in their midst. Great town.
  5. Full gear, yes, and I wear a 3/4 helmet. My commute home is 50 miles at the crack of dawn after 12.5hours, and I usually drink a cup of coffee on the bike to maintain my alertness. My gear worked flawlessly, though. Not so much as a scrape on me.
  6. So there I as, driving to work on a beautiful SoCal afternoon. I came up on a 90 degree left handed sweeper, no traffic, clear road, about 25mph. I eased into the turn, acheiving full lean with throttle roll-on, when to my surprise, my back end completely washed out. I found my self on the pavement watching my '09 RSV continue in a straight line, on it's left side. When it hit the edge of the roadway, it high-sided and smashed down hard on the right side. Tow truck to the dealer, call to insurance and several beers late, here I am. By the grace of God I am uninjured, but the bike may be a total. New fairings, bags and rub rails, new windshield, new engine guards, new floorboards, that's just the start of what I see needed. And I am NO mechanic. .
  7. Name of Restaurant DuPars Street Address Several in LA area City LA / Studio City/ Thousand Oaks / Oxnard State or Province CA Website (Optional) http://www.du-pars.com/menu.html Quality of Food Fantastic Quality of Service Good Biker Friendly? (Parking, Trusted Location, Etc.) Yes Kind of Food? (Mexican, Chinese, etc.) American food Alcohol Served? No Additional Comments This is my favorite restaurant. They have got the best breakfast menu around, plus they are open 24hrs 7days. Everything on the menu is EXCELLENT and the pies, made from scratch at each location, are PHENOMENAL.
  8. In the Peoples Republic of California, a motorcycle is defined in the vehicle as a "two-wheeled" conveyance. Trikes/sidecars are not motorcycles, and need no special license, nor do they need helmets. The Governator got into a slight crash 2 years ago on a harley w/a sidecar. Much ado was made of his not having a M/C license, although he was wearing a helmet (as was his kid in the sidecar).
  9. Here is my experience with LimeWire... Yes, it's free. Yes, there are hundreds of thousands of songs there. Yes, it's easy to download the software/songs. About 1 out of every 5 songs that I downloaded sound like they were tape-dubbed off a crappy radio station. In a bathroom. For $1 per song, I'll stick to iTunes, where the quality is always good.
  10. Well. I bought a $20,000 6 disc changer...It came with a really cool motorcycle, but quite frankly, I don't need it (the changer, not the bike). I want to sell it, but have no idea what it's worth. It's brand new, in the box, with 2 pieces that I assume are for the installation. One is a plastic piece and one is a very thick rubber boot that seems like it is made to go around the player. I don't want to list it on eBay until I know what it might be worth, any advice? Kevin
  11. Met Jerry, whose 2007 is ALMOST as pretty as my 2009. Nice to meet a fellow SoCal Venturer. Thought it was a HD from 1/4 mile back, then got next to him, gave a courtesy wave and SHOCK!! We puled into a Starbucks and enjoyed a cold one. Haven't seen another Venture on the road down here. Hope he sees this thread and responds... Kevin
  12. I have wondered the same thin g after seeing a used HD (unknown model) with the removeable tour pack. It had quick connects for the speakers, and it looked SHARP. Anyone with info on how this mod was accomplished?
  13. As soon as I figure out how to.. No joke. I'll get some shots up. It looks AWESOME!! Yamaha added some chrome accents, pinstriping, new wind deflectors on the lowers, and black accents on the cooling fins... Easily the best looking RSV I have ever seen. Oops, I meant to say ...owned. Kevin
  14. I actually had the same thought, so I read the "fine print" before signing on the dotted line. The "warranty" is actually a service agreement that covers much of what factory warranty covers, plus towing/rental reimbursement. Not that I expect to need any of that, it's just nice to have. That item added about $500 to the deal, I know I could have gotten it cheaper if I had hunted, but it seems like a good bundle to me.
  15. Well, after a small(?) spill in front of my house that I rode away from...I got tired of looking at the dent inthe gas tank and the broken fairing so I put in an insurance claim and took the bike to the local dealer (Cal-Coast Motorsports) in Ventura, CA. Their estimate to repair the right side of the motorcycle was $7700. To be fair, they said that they would repair everything to showroom condition, and my motorcycle had EVERY chrome gadget/gizmo in the Star catalog. Many of these pieces had tiny scratches and were still VERY useable. Needless to say, the dollar amounts didn't add up, and GEICO totalled the motorcycle. I took the insurance proceeds and bought a 2009 model, red. The motorcycle, including a 4-year extended warranty (yes, through 2017), a 3 yr service contract (covers all recommended services, oil changes etc.), and 5 hrs of labor ($89 per hour) to put all of the sparkly trinkets on the new motorcycle for $21,000 OTD. i am thrilled and I can't wait to see how the 2009 fuel injected motor and CD player work out...oh wait....darn.
