  1. Hey Bongobobny, The bike is in the shop. I am as anxious as you to know what caused the problem in case it ever happens to me. Will let you know as soon as I find out.
  2. Stated value and guaranteed value can be different. Usually they aren't different but can be. Guraranteed value is where you tell the company the value and they verify it's a reasonable, accurate number. Then they guarantee that value in the event of a total loss. Stated value is basically the same but some companies will have their policy written where they can take depreciation. Just make sure if your company offers stated value that there won't be any depreciation at the time of a loss.
  3. Most companies consider a classic car to be 25 years or older but some of the classic insurers will insure exotic cars regardless of the age. Last year one of my insureds bought a new Ferrari. I didn't think it would be a problem to insure it but I got turned down by every major auto insurance company. Hagerty was glad to insure it. When comparing companies for classic car insurance make sure you check the mileage restriction, if any, and are you required to keep the car in an enclosed locked building when not in use, and make sure you are getting guaranteed value and not stated value coverage.
  4. Was riding with my friend yesterday who has an 08 venture. We stopped for lunch for about an hour or so. After riding again about 1 mile my friend pulled over. The temp light and oil light were on. Bike is full of oil and water. Looked at the fan and it wasn't coming on. Here is the weird part. When the ignition switch was on you could turn the kill switch on and the bike would start without pressing the start button. Turn the kill switch off engine stops, turn the kill switch on the bike starts. If you leaned down toward the left side of engine you could hear a constant whine. We didn't want to continue riding home because we weren't sure about the whine. We wondered if maybe the starter wasn't switching off and was continuing to run. We left the bike at the police station, we were a 150 miles from home, and are going to get it today and trailer it home. Anyone have any ideas of what is going on. The worst thing for me was all the harleys that came by and seeing a yamaha broke down beside the road.
  5. The harley guys will have to come up with some new jokes. I have heard them say when a goldwing comes by, "hey, what is that sound, there is silence, then they say, "oh that was a goldwing."
  6. Bought a set Rick Butler makes, a few years ago. No problem with them coming off. Recently had bike at dealer and they commented on how easy it was to remove and reinstall the seat.
  7. I installed skydoc's clutch spring and I replaced the other disc also. I am not mechanically inclined so I was concerned. I printed the two write ups that are on this site showing how to replace the clutch. On of the write ups is for using the barnett clutch. Even though I didn't use the barnett clutch there are some good pictures that will help with skydoc's clutch. I surprised myself. The clutch replacement is easy and just like the pictures show.
  8. Hey Tisunac, After the previous post I clicked on the link and it says web site can't be found. Do a search for clutch upgrade and you will find the link listed.
  9. Hey Tisunac. Prior to the upgrade if I was going full speed in 5th gear, 60 to 65 mph, and twisted the throttle the engine would rev up. Also, when I put the bike in first gear to take off when I let the clutch out there was a "clunk" noise and the bike was slow to start moving even after the clutch lever was all the way out. After the upgrade the clutch lever is stronger and when I let the lever out the bike takes off immediately and there isn't a clunk noise and when I shift gears there is no hesitation it it's much smoother when I shift. I have 66,000 miles on my 05 venture. I order the upgrade from skydoc who has his upgrade in the classified section of this site. I also went ahead and ordered the other clutch disc. I figured if I was going through the trouble to go into the clutch might as well replace all the disc. There are two write ups with pictures on here that give detailed instructions. You can find one at: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/sh...barnett+clutch. This is for the barnett clutch but the steps are the same as any other clutch. The second is a write up by Tartan Terror. Do a search for clutch upgrade and it will list it under Freebird (5-25-07). I think this is the write up for using the upgrade from skydoc. I think an upgrade will solve your problem.
  10. I ordered the clutch spring kit from Skydoc along with the other clutch disk. He shipped them promptly and yesterday I installed the spring and new disk. It was easy after looking at the two write ups that were posted here with pictures. The clutch is much smoother going through the gears and there isn't any slippage now.
  11. I have a set of chatterbox headsets I bought about 6 years ago. I think they were $89.00 but I don't remember if that was for each one or total. I haven't had any problem with them. Three years ago I bought 2 adapters from edsets that have the plug, I think it is 8MM, so I could use earbuds. I cut the wire for the speakers you mount in the helmet and removed them. The sound quality of the ear buds is excellent and you can use them with any helmet since you don't have speakers to mount in the helmet.
  12. It could happen to me tomorrow but I won't ride behind a truck with scraps on the back, a truck with ladders attached or a tractor trailer rig. If I can't get around them I will back off until I would have enough time to stop before something fell off the truck and hit me.
  13. Crotch rockets are the bikes most stolen. Effective 4/15/14 Dairyland Insurance Co will not insure a crotch rocket. I asked why and their rep said "theft claims are going out of the roof." Effective 4/1/14 Foremost will not insure a crotch rocket. As someone said it's easy to steal a 400 pound bike. I talked to a sales rep about this at our local honda, yamaha dealer and he said he went to Orlando and was told if you are on a crotch rocket and you stop to fill up with gas, pay at the pump. Do not go inside to pay. While you're inside the thieves will pull up in a pickup truck and throw the bike in the back and take off. Someone pulled up to the local honda, yamaha dealer and busted the plate glass window and got a crotch rocket and threw in the back of a truck and drove off before the police could get there. The owner of a local motel next door saw the thieves drive away and gave the police a description. Two days later the police called the dealer and told them where the bike was and that it had been repainted green. We all have to pay for what dishonest people do.
  14. I have been using the XXL tinted clearview shield with the vent. I have used this windshield since 2006. My wife says she doesn't get any buffeting with this shield.
  15. If you are taking about the tabs that the screws go into to keep you windshield on, the article by V7goose isn't what you need. To repair the tabs on the fairing you need to get a can of Oatey abs glue. You can get it at a hardware store or home depot or lowes. I called V7goose and talked to him about the glue because every can I found had a label that said for pvc. You don't want pvc glue. If you read the directions on the back of the can and it says for abs also this it is the glue you need. If the tab isn't completely broken take a tooth pick and work the blue into the crack and put the pieces together and then remove them again to work the glue into both pieces. The glue melts the plastic and welds the pieces together. It needs to set overnight or for a day. If the piece is completely broken you do the same. You just put glue on both peices. I just did this to mine about a month ago and it is stronger now than before. There is a metal piece that runs across the fairing that has holes for the screws to go into the windshield. This piece has a tab on each end and they always break. This is what V7Goose is talking about in his write up. I did that fix to my bike after I glued the broken tabs on the fairing.
  16. I got one of these calls at 9:00am on a sunday. Said his name, (Indian,) so fast I couldn't understand. He was talking fast and I said, Mr. Patel, Mr. Patel, please slow down. He said my name isn't Patel. I said I though all you indians were named Patel. He got upset and was rattling of something and I said, Mr. Patel, Mr Patel, let me ask you a question. He said go ahead. I said do you have a red dot on your forehead. He hung up.
  17. Sorry for the rider and his family, however you can't cheat death but so many times before it catches up with you. There is a kawasaki dealer in Thomasville, GA that is one of the most knowledgeable people about motorcycles I have ever met. He raced bikes for many years. He told me guys will come into the dealership and they want the fastest kawasaki he has. I don't remember the model of the bike but he said you can be going 120mph and twist the throttle and the bike will stand up. First thing he asks is "how many years experience do you have riding a bike and when they say this will be my first bike he says "sorry I won't sell this bike to you." Of course they then ask him why and he tells them, "I don't like going to funerals and if I sell you this bike in about 2 weeks I will be going to your funeral." The dealer said he made one exception when a guy said he had ridden a friends bike for several months. The dealer then told me to look up the street and said, " you see that shopping center, when I said yes, he said well the guy went through a plate glass window there about 2 weeks after buying the bike.
  18. I was on a trip 2 weeks ago and started going down the ramp to get on I 10. In 5th gear at about 60mph and twisted the throttle and the engine reved up. I have the dreaded clutch slip. I made it 66,000 miles but have to fix know.
  19. I had my bike at the dealer last week for a routine service. They said one of the bolts that hold the gas tank on was missing and they replaced it. I have had many bolts come loose but never heard of a bolt holding the gas tank missing.
  20. Thanks for the replies. Do you think the programs that were recommended to download are legit? I am sceptical of some of these. Thanks
  21. I downloaded an update to ccleaner yesterday and a program called Tuvaro has hijacked my home page. Every search I do to find how to remove this programs wants me to download a program to remove it. I'm hesitant to download. Anyone know how to get this program out of my computer? Still using windows XP.
  22. Hey videoarizona, Progressive's rates through USAA, direct through an agent or through the harley agency are the same. There is no discount for going through USAA.
  23. Hey Freebird, I know what you are saying. I have been an insurance agent for 42 years. When my son came in with me I told him this, "You can take educated people with their MBA degrees and put them to work with an insurance company and they lose all common sense and become stupid." My son reminds me almost weekly how true this statement is. Since computers the insurance business has changed and I think for the worse. In the old days you had a manual and you looked at the age and marital status of the prospect and there was the rate. Today with computers companies can segment the rates down to the street you live on. I think the days of getting a rate and it being the same for one or two years is over with. Companies are competing for market share and constantly changing rates. Here's what I don't like. Say you have been with progressive for 4 years and they realize their current rate is too high and they are losing market share. They will come out with a new program with lower rates but if you are in an old program with higher rates they won't notify you that they will renew you in the new program. You will be left in the old program unless your agent moves you to the new program. I don't think this is right but all companies do this. Yesterday one of our customers came in because his progressive policy was renewing. He has been with flo since 2004 and the renewal was a little over $800 for six months. My son requoted him with progressive and we re wrote him with the same coverage he had previously with progressive for $624 with progressive. If we hadn't let him know about this he would still be paying over $800. This is the game insurance companies are playing today. The motorycle rates with progressive are the same whether you go direct, with an agent, with the HD agency or USAA. You were in an old progressive program but the latest program has a lower rate. If you are insured with an agent and go to progressive direct or through a program like the harley agency they will not insure you because they don't want to upset their agents. With all the advertising progressive still gets approx 80% of their business from agents.
  24. I don't know what has happened to progressive. They are not the company they used to be. I posted before that in Georgia they have the highest rates and it's getting where evertime there is a claim, I have to get involved and get redneck with them to get the claim paid. How they are the number one motorcycle insurer in the US is beyond me. Well I do know. Harley Davidson asked companies to bid on putting a call center in their insurance agency in Nevada. Progressive won the bid. When a harley dealer sells a harley they send the info to their agency and they place the insurance with progressive. Most people just want to get the bike and leave so they don't check the rates. When the policy comes up for renewal most people have talked to other bikers and realize they are paying too much and thats when we insure them at half or 1/3 of what they are paying to progressive. I have my bike insured with foremost and they went up $87 on renewal but I am staying with them. Of the six companies I represent they are the best with service and claims payments. They are a quality company but they lost a lot of money last year on motorcycles and they have to make some changes. As an example if you take the premium they get from my agency and then subtract the claims paid last year my loss ratio is 400%. So for every $100 foremost received in premiums they paid out $400. The number one thing killing the insurance companies is theft of the crotch rockets. Effective January1 foremost will not insure a crotch rocket and effective 4/15 Dairyland won't insure one until something can be done about the theft problem. As I've said many times, every state is different so you need to get rates for more than one company.
  25. Congratulations. This is something to be proud of.
