  1. I ordered it last night and rec'd notice it's on the way early this morning. I bought it on Ebay as Amazon was priced higher and didn't offer free shipping. For $23.XX I figure I did OK!
  2. Motion Pro Clutch Holding Tool? Is this the one you got that worked on the XVZ 1200?
  3. I'm replacing the segment and pins behind the clutch basket, so far as I know I have to remove the basket to do this. So both side covers are currently off the engine. Can I put a breaker bar with (18mm, 19mm?) a socket on the starter clutch bolt to hold the crank shaft while turning the bolt(s) to remove the clutch basket? I saw the wooden basket holder in the segment repair in the tech library and noted that it uses a partially torn down bike frame to hold the 2" X 4" s in place so I don't know if that will work for me....
  4. Try a 2nd generation brake handle/master cylinder, you can get them on Ebay. The piston in the master cylinder is larger and the reservoir (might be?) is bigger too.
  5. Thanks Van! What I got done today: Started clutch is installed, the center gear cover w/new gasket is back on. I got the standard rider's foot pegs back on, I have SEVERAL donor bikes on hand so all I'll have to buy are BROKEN/WORN parts and stuff like gaskets. So If ya need some parts PM me. I had several distractions (honey dos) and I was spending time making sure I was doing the started clutch right. I have revised some plans, instead of buying new wheel bearings I'm taking the wheels off the old Number 1; she's got good tires and new balls are best wheel bearings front and rear.I ordered the right side case cover gasket and the parts ness. to fix the clunky shift (I suspect it's worn) as I'm going to be in there anyway and the parts cost is minimal why not now instead of later and miss the chance to buy ANOTHER case cover gasket not to mention removing all the other crap that's in the way?
  6. If I could (knew how) to read stored messages I'd be able to tell you more about the mod. The stock clutch has 3 rollers where the ring gear rides inside the fly wheel in the modded one there are 17 rollers and be build of heavier parts; a member here on the forum did it for me. Apparently from what I can divine from my now available older emails YOU did the mod for me!
  7. SO... I looked at all the starter clutch install info I could find here on the site and checked the tech manual for my question and found no info there either so my question is this: Should I soak the starter clutch assembly in engine oil prior to installation, wet it with oil, or just install it dry? My clutch is newly overhauled and modded so it's defiantly dry except for the assembly oil used by the over hauler.
  8. I got an 83 TCI that works. PM me for further discussion.
  9. SOOOO... should I or do I need to soak the starter clutch in oil prior to installation or can I slip her on there, tighten her up and install the case cover? Has anyone ever had issues with the wires going to the alternator when they do this job? I noticed that the wire insulation is quite brittle; I'm afraid of some wire breaking inside the insulation....On the 83.5 I noticed that the the insulation on the alternator armature broke off... I put some epoxy on the exposed area but haven't done an Operational check to see if that repair works....
  10. So the first pic is of the bike taken by the PO. the 2nd is the starter clutch under tension from the puller. It was left all night with tension on it but it was still VERY WELL IN PLACE in the AM when I ck'ed it. 3rd and 4th are of the starter clutch loose off the crank shaft. BAM it came loose after a couple dozen taps with a BFH.
  11. What a forum! How cool is that? The best hard won advice and help you can find! Still the best $12.00 you could spend on your VR! KOO DOS to ALL!!!
  12. Will post some later today after I get the lift cleaned off. Seems my plastic oil catcher pan is slightly porous. I need a 2nd metal cooking tray, the one I have is about 8-9" X 14-16", catches all the oil in a venture rather well, cleans up well too. Why (you ask) didn't I use it to start with? Well I couldn't find the _ _ _ _ thing!
  13. Got the engine side covers off today, noted that the local parts houses had no H/D clutch springs to go with my new friction disks so I ordered some Barnetts on E-Bay. The Started clutch is tired on this bike so I'm installing the hopped one one I bought from one of the guys here. I have the puller on the original one (still on the bike) it under tension; I'm waiting for it to pop off over night then I will swap them out and re-install the cover(s) and install original foot pegs and shifter arms. The bike had floor boards but they make shifting too awkward for me and besides there are some foot rests on the case guard bars that look pretty comfortable to me. I like riding with my feet on the stock pegs, having an alternative place to put them (my feet) is all I need. This week I will clean the gasket surfaces on the side cases and engine proper while I wait for my parts, replace what I can of the original foot pegs and I have a new seal for the shifter rod to install too. I will be installing those ign. coil over plug assemblies tomorrow. I'm looking around for the disk and cord Dingy send with the Ignitec ignition so I can re-program it from the 83.5 to the 85. I will probably take off the wheels and check the bearings for wear and grease them if they are ok. The rear ones I will take to a shop in town that will remove and install the new "Balls Are Best" bearing for a reasonable price; maybe I'll take the front wheel there too.
  14. Sounds like the judge needs to retire. A judge's job is to interpret the law; not make it. You should have obtained the state reference for the law and quoted it, and explain there has been no revision since blah, blah, blah. Seems to me the cops could have given you the reference....
  15. Put some masking tape on the painted (outside) site of the hole that has the cracks. Apply some black ABS plumbing pipe glue to the cracks from the inside, put some tape over this side too. Wipe off any glue that seeps out from under the tape. This will fill the cracks and drilling out the holes to proper size should be pretty easy using the hinges or luggage rack as a guide. Another reason the plastic could be cracking is age, it could be shrinking therefore cracking; so filling it with ABS plastic should be a help.
  16. So the local dealer said he had 4 springs, 4 SETS or FOUR springs? He said they were $10.00. I figure he sells them EACH and NOT as a set. Oh yeah not even heavy duty rated. The Stealer.... Thanks for clearing the air Dan!
  17. I want to order a SET (6 springs) for my '85 VR. The site (http://www.barnettclutches.com/1313/yamaha/0/0/1985-yamaha-xvz12-venture.html) So according to what I see I get a SET of 6 springs for $22.16 Here's the price quote copied from the site: [h=3]Clutch Spring Kit[/h] Part# 501-50-06053 Notes: Set of 6 heavy duty springs. Price:$22.16 ea. Quantity: Add to Cart So am I going to get ONE SPRING or ONE SET of 6 springs?
  18. So now that the gaskets for the left and right case(es) have arrived I will be replacing the starter clutch and tranny clutch this week. I will also be filling the carb bowls with Sea Foam and installing the coil over plug coils. I am hoping this will solve the hard/no start issues.
  19. Well with 5 other 1200s i probably have a good case....
  20. Maybe it would be better to refer to this part as the info given below. I KNOW it's NOT the elbow but it's certainly understandable. It's apparently available. Some one should include the part number in their next order from Partzilla.com just to see what it actually is. This number is from the 83 parts catalog. PLUG, DRAIN This is not p/n 2L1-14191-00-00
  21. Any idea as to the dimensions of said insert, or a P/N and source? Thanks for the info guy!
  22. Well with 58k on it I'm sure there is a glaze, but I haven't seen, read, or heard about anyone blasting the clutch steels with any kind of media. I know glass would frost the surface, steel grit would probably ruin the part because it's too aggressive and heat build-up would be terrific. I some times post here right after I get up so I'm not always very "with it" either!
