Speakers Replace?
IronMike replied to craigatcsi's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
40 watts per channel sounds like enough to me. Might be double what you have now or even triple. One person who has done it said it sounds better. And he still has his CB and Comm. You asked why only 40 Watts? Well keep in mind battery drain. You want to choose a amp that will fit for one and two the lowest draw that will do the job. OR you can then be working on charge system and battery problems as well as stator problems and might even have ta add a Capacitor or even an extra battery and even after all that mess, it would not endure a long trip before it ran you dry on power. I have the edsets with the ear buds, ALL the sound you ever need. Update ear buds as you can afford or as they come out. But if I was going to modify, that Alpine 40 amp looks good to me. The local Stereo shop in town been around about 30 years they do bikes and ONLY install ALPINE in bikes. -
Help with fairing decision
IronMike replied to SundayRider's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I tried to cure this same problem on my Roadstar after about 5K in STUFF I took it all back off. Reckless Fairing, HD trunk, Lowers of five kinds, scoops, 3 different Wind screens, NOTHING worked and all caused a problem of some sort or another. A lot of money was tossed and a lot of like new parts left over. It all could have been cured by some jacket some guy makes, I can't remember the name I think its a Flap Jacket maybe. Anyhow if you are riding a flap comes up from the front of your jacket. Just above your Chestline. Blocks all the wind at your head. To test the therory Ride and when you get that bobble action just raise your arm in front of your checst and notice it goes away. I suppose you could malke a flapjacket. -
Why Reverse A Rear Tire When Put On The Front?
IronMike replied to GlennTuc's topic in The Darksiders
Absolutely! -
I am not getting why people are wanting or feeling the need to add weather strip around the lid. I have not had mine long but I have towed it in serious rain and back azz dusty dirt roads and have not noticed any dust get in nor one drop of water. It seems to me you would be just adding a problem.

After a spin on the Slingshot, jumping on the Venture would be about the same as Jumping on the riding lawnmower. Good thing you sold it. You've kicked it up a Notch. And introducing the Slingshot accessory guy!

Tires- No Debate!! Just a poll that's all.
IronMike replied to ENG2242's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
ANYTHING but Avons! I have used 4 ALL with great handling and poor tire construction, they dry rot! Even the fresh ones. At that point the Factory Rep will not know you. After I proved my case, they got back to me when the change was all over. pffffff. Michelin Commander II up front the REAR 130 (Smaller size) The BF Goodrich Radial TA in the proper Darkside size (Dragster Front tire) On the rear! So, I have a Rear Tire on the front and a Front tire on the Rear! No one gets as good as traction as me and no one can go over 30K miles and never swap a tire! It rides really nice and you can lay down one hell of a skid mark! (be careful not to slam into the Windshield) GOBS of traction and mileage with this combo. http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d139/usmcxterra/Venture%202008/20140820_003412_zpsaofb6djd.jpg Ummm don't mind that Roadstar over there on it's 2nd Darkside tire. 70K miles of year round riding in Cleveland, Ohio. Whoot whoot! http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d139/usmcxterra/darkside/ab829ceb.jpg Taken on a day when the Yami Shop Closed due to weather! LOL The Harley Shop in Warren Ohio was open and doing the Winter Warrior Giveaway, I was the only one to show up that day. Needless to say. Disclaimer! (IronMike is Variable Crazy on from a Level 5 to 10 and does not condone, endorse, suggest, require, imply, or even DARE you to do any of the sheet that guy does! And that's why on the back of his bike it says, "Don't follow me...You won't make it!" :smile5: -
I have my tagged moved as pictured and it does have a LED on it. I experienced the Tag Drag problem right away and moved it like the next day. I think it drags way too much wind out there also. REALLY the only reason they put it these is because it is convenient to meet the legal requirement of lighting it. Its just below the tail light. Anyways I really suggest moving it and lighting it CHEAP mod. But if you do not. I have always used a fishing leader to secure to the plate via the bolt or even a free bolt hole and use a length that lets it drop and rattle and bounce so you know what happened. One end on the plate the other to the trailer somewhere. (Not the bracket that is going to fall off.) I also put a phone number on my plate or an e mail address. They do charge for a replacement a handsome price.

I am going to point you to the Detxer Web site for information on the bearings. You have to pack them every 12K or once a year. So what is the point in bearing buddies I say if its not a boat trailer getting dunked? It IS a real good idea to pack them every year or the way we use them every other year. So you know what you have. If you have the factory bearings they will not be any good once removed mine just basically disintegrated. It was about $100 to replace with Timkin. I found sharp shards of metal from the ZERKS in the grease of the stock bearings. I had replaced the Zerks so I dont know what set left the metal. I seriously suppose if you just used the zerk on the inside bearings and packed the outside one carefully, you might get a few years out of the stock bearings. Also the bearing buddies limit the use of hub caps and they stick out so far that they can be knocked off on a curb. So, I DID TAKE MINE OFF!

And i was just about to award Freebird the Electrical Contract on my remodel job!

It does come in a spray can. Called Deep Creep. They have just updated it. It does the same thing. It seems to have a reddish color lube in it though. The newer cans have an adaptor for introduction into a auto intake system. I normally just pour in regular seafoam. On the bike though the spray work s good but spray it directly into carbs. Not the intake. A vacuum intake will work it will just screw up an air intake. Seafoam web site has all this info. A good read.

It mentions that application right on the can. As well you can put it in the Oil, and You can also put it in Motorcycle oil I think it was 6 oz for 4 qts. (Asked them over the internet, info also comes up otherwise on search.) You are really suppose to shut it off and let it sit in there overnight. Next AM it REALLY smokes for a while then runs clear. I have done same thing with the bike.

Try Member Vendor Carbon One his is similar but about $200 less.

20 amp is a little big for standard plugs. 20 AMP is what I have in the ceiling of my Shop for like saws and motor driven 110 things. Yes loose connections will do this or maybe they have a ground fault plug wired into the circuit. (But that would kick not the breaker) The new plugs have the stab connections, your better off using the screws and really crank on em. My Jacuzzi is 220 on a GFI Circuit breaker and if the slightest thing grounds anything out it trips in a millisecond.

Where is a good vacuum inlet?
IronMike replied to IronMike's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
But I wonder is it really starving for oil or is it just a bogus momentary misinformation event? So far I have not let off it when it does that and no blow yet. Very annoying. Same guy designed that who suggested the cassette deck. -
[ame=http://www.amazon.com/Approved-Full-Armor-Motorcycle-Jacket-L/dp/B00BFWK3PY]Amazon.com: CE Approved Full Body Armor Motorcycle Jacket-L: Automotive@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51lhwIEVGlL.@@AMEPARAM@@51lhwIEVGlL[/ame] This is not leather its ten times better in the heat. You can wear it as it has a cooling action in any heat. But if it gets cool you will need something with tight sleeves at the wrist to put on over it or you will freeze. I always wear it on hot days with UA under it just to keep cool. Or maybe go for a slide.

Where is a good vacuum inlet?

O this never happens! I do have an award winning dealer here in town. Gigantic parts stock. Always pretty good to me on price but all the stories I hear about service depts. has me scared to death of them. When I dropped mine off, I felt I had no choice, No one here knew and I don't ask unless I read a lot and tried a lot. That I did. To Whits end. So the dealer said of course we have no idea but at the leats you are looking at $400 as it seems like its running lean, but we don't know, could be a valve job at $890.00 Ok. But whatever it is, it will be done tomorrow. Well they called and apologized it was not what they thought They old Here we go! Bells goes off. Ready to pick up and we Rode the DARKSIDE! It runs great! Oh and we were wrong on the price too. Less than $200 out the door. Thats $200 under their LOW estimate. $1200 under the High. Go on and right away I knew it was fixed. It was something pollution control, Blocking off the AIS would not have fixed it and you would need the exhaust probes to diagnose it. Then Sync it and check again. So I feel a lot better it was something I could not have done. At first it was just a Jetting issue and I though man If I could see right I could do this. The guy who worked on it could not explain the eaxt problem. He was busy. But they kknew their stuff, delivered quick, and cam in low on the price on a totally fixed bike. How often does that happen? -
Haha. So we took the bearings out to pack with new grease and the fell apart in our hands. Laughable. So. Eighty dollars in New bearings and twelve for seals. That's a considerable amount. Not such a cheap trailer after all. DIT. Correction. $26. Cup and cone set good grief. I think the better option here is swap it over to the Dexter torsion axle. And I Probably will...this will be a garden cart axle. Also noticed metal shavings in the Grease, determined to be left over threads from removing the Original Zerks, I suspect when they were backed out the threads fell into the grease. Highly Suggest anyone depending on this trailer just go ahead and put the new zerks in and then clean the hub and Pack whatever bearings are still ok or buy new Timkin like I did. I think the only part not modified was the basic frame.

Four IT guys I know use MSSE also and recommended it for me. One is in charge of a World wide company the other the entire state of Michigan. I have it solely in five computers, no problems. I have had serious problems with any anti Virus I pay for, they high jack your system and force things on you .... the programs themselves are spyware. Norton is the worst I think. And once it is on there, it will never be all the way off. I think MS has an interest in protecting their own program. Just set it up right, update and don't be stupid with things. And so far still FREE.

Bought a Roadstar New in 08, The clutch Discs had the same arrangement. I wonder what is up with that? Do they do that intentionally or by mistake? I bought all new, did the Burnett and shimmed it with a special washer to gain total lock up. Put the Discs in the way I thought they should be, disc plate disc plate disc plate. No Plate plate. Works perfectly going on 40K miles with it like that. I know nothing of first Gens, Sorta want one, but after reading some things sorta don't.

Where is a good vacuum inlet?
IronMike replied to IronMike's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
As a Last ditch effort with no where to go this morning I chacked the voltage Cranking, Running and under throttle, above 12.5 all the way. Did that to rule out the battery. I am not thinking the Coil, seems like it is firing on all 4. Runs like a top anywhere but where you normally run. Crising and at low speed. Like I said I can't see, or worse yet one eye can't see. its really frustrating to work on like that. You now how that is. I think I fixed it! I took it and my wallet to the dealer! With any luck the bike comes back fixed for the NEXT vacation (The 4th) and the wallet comes back broke. Never dreamed I'd be paying a dealer. If it needs a Valve Job it's Just one thousand dollars. I wrote that out so you know its not a mistake. They seem to think its just lean on the bottom. I might agree but how the hell did it get lean all of a sudden? Not from just blowing out the air cleaners! I WILL keep the Right rear coil in mind for the future. Is that the one on the rearward Left side? I can go Cylinder number if you have that. -
Oh speaking of Plates as you see in my picture I moved mine up and center, where they have it, it drags a lot of wind and prevents storage on the Tail End. I used a small 8 LED light stuck up under the lip pointing down to Light it. The 1157 LEDs are a joke compared to the Boat ones, But you still need side lamps if you ask me. How come no one else posts pictures? Oh thats right it takes time. I'd like to see pictures of some of that stuff.

Tire Age Question
IronMike replied to bostonlawman2003's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I would run them. Just keep an eye on them. Look for cracks very small around the rim and in the tread where it meets the casing. Thats it! If they do not crack up don't worry. My X GF had some Chinkonohama tires on her 2004 Honda Shadow and the dawg gone things look new to this day. I have no idea why. Id leave for the other coast on em. A lot of the recommendations of course is to sell tires and cover their behinds. Mount em! I second the UV ray thing. That is the most damaging. And parking one cement and pavement. Try to park on wood pads. And raise the tires in the off season. -
Where is a good vacuum inlet?
IronMike replied to IronMike's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Yep. Thats why I checked em, they were not out by much. Getting them perfect has no effect. I read low end performance problems in Clymer and only thing I can see is Valves out of whack and that would be so disappointing since the bike only has 21K on it. I put 12 of that on in a year if they go out that quick, I need a bike with a better motor. I recently had a eye problem going to take 6 months of shots to fix so I can't really do a valve adjustment right now. I can't see good up close at all. Its a Retina Off whack so no glasses will help. I cant even read. I have to take a picture and blow it up to read. Zoom here works great I can read internet but the book is hard. The first part of the throttle is weak, I call it fluffy, it runs perfect otherwise. But you do not realize you use that first 1/4 twist the most. Even while cruising down the highway at 70 in OD . no power there. -
Where is a good vacuum inlet?
IronMike replied to IronMike's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Well, since I went blind in the one eye its just too much for me to figure out I can't see to read well or to work on the bike. Its nothing simple. Its too frustrating to work on it and not see what i am looking at. It runs terrible in the low end near as I can figure with all I have done its got to be the valves so far out of adjustment it would be incredible especially considering the Roadstar I have with 70K on it has never been touched and it runs perfect. Thought this would be an easy one for the forum. But here I go to the stealership. Pretty pissed, I took this week Vacation to ride and I am going no where. A hitch for the dependable Roadstar is in order. I'd be gone! My last Yamahas a Can assure you that!
