I wonder how that applies to a Mini 14. My guess would be that .223 would be intended for a bolt action, and that .556 would be for auto loaders. I dunno. Like you said, I've shot both with no problems.:confused07:

Well you could well be correct on that!

Most 223 only firearms I've seen are indeed bolt actions. But the AR is 223. Whereas most if not all 556's are semi-autos.

The Mossberg MVP Varmint I was looking at is marked both 556 & 223 & that was a bolt action with magazine.

As you say it can be :confused07: :confused24: if you stick to what's marked on the barrel you won't go too far wrong LOL.

Got a question for the Pucster.... Doesn't the serial number part of that AR15 have to go thru an FFL dealer, or are things that much better in Michigan ???

I always thought the FFL ruling was the Feds... Maybe it's just Old Fage.... :-)

So the way works here @Condor is if your buying over the internet and having stuff shipped in everything has to be sent to an FFL.. This includes Handguns, Long guns and/or the parts where that have the serial numbers stamped on them if your buying parts - usually this means lower receivers. I have an FFL (Pawnshop - GREAT PEOPLE) that do ship ins for 20 bucks and that includes the background check. There is no break if you have a concealed carry, still gotta pay the 20 (CHEAP) and fill out the paper work - then the FFL runs a background and out the door ya go.. Owner to owner here is Michigan is still open (Socialist here call this the Gun Show Loophole cause literally you can be at a gun show, see a guy selling a long gun, hand em the money and walk out the door completely legal) and legal with no backgrounds BUT if we are talking handguns then you either have to go to the Sherrifs Dept, have them to a Background, wait a few days, get a purchase permit, take the permit to the owner of the shooter, he fills in his part(s), keeps his corner of the paper, take the rest back to the Sherrif, the Sherrif tears off a corner and gives it to you and charges 10 bucks. If you dont wanna wait, both you and the seller can go to the Pawn shop and have it all taken care of instantly for 20 bucks.. Make sense?

Michigan is actually a really cool place to be a shooter. Here, we still consider State and Federal Lands to belong to "we the peoples". Unless otherwise posted, you can step out of your car parked on the edge of state land and go to shooting. Some things have changed over the years because of misuse like you cant purposely shoot a tree and you have to make sure your tossing real Clay Pigeons so they turn back to dirt. We ALWAYS make sure we take out what we bring in (like paper targets and pick up empties but there are some jerk wads that dont adhere to that decency. I know of LOTS of shooting spots where people have hauled in all kinds of stuff to shoot at and left it there = DISCUSTING IMHO.. Kind of stuff that ruins it for everyone in the long run. Usually there is at least 1 major clean up weekend where people get together and pickup after the loosers.

Also, that land that belongs to we the people is OPEN CAMP! Deer season (and Duck, and Pheasant, and Rabbit now that I think about it) used to be HUGE here.. Schools would shut down as most Dads would drag their kids up north for a week or two of huntin and campin and romping and having fun.. Cause of Political nonsense those days are long gone BUT there still is the occasion camping happening cause there still is a few of us old people that enjoy it..

I know,, way to much :Im not listening to again,, ohhh well,, hope I answered your question in all that mumbo jumbo :missingtooth:

I've read a fair bit on the subject but I'm no expert, the consensus appears to be that 556 & 223 are NOT the same. HOWEVER that said (I don't want to get long winded) if a firearm is marked 556 & 223 there'is no problem using either.

IF it's marked 223, then 556 ammo should NOT be used

IF marked 556 it is generally widely accepted that 223 can also be used.

As I understand it, it's all to do with the pressures generated & the angle of the cartridge shoulder. I know, I know there will be many folks who will say they have shot both calibers from all sorts of rifles, I'm just stating the conclusions I've come to, to make sure I & those around me are safe. Like I said I'm no expert so take this for what it's worth! LOL

There is definitely a difference between the two and ya dont wanna go shootin the NATO 556 in a shooter chambered for the 223.. 223 in a 556, good to go but not the other way around. You guys are right on target with the higher pressures. The 556 has a lightly deeper throat in the chamber that causes accuracy loss if shooting 223 in them though. Years ago a guy with the last name of "Wylde" developed a chamber that gives the best of both worlds - it will both rounds very well and the 223 gets its accuracy back and then some. That is why I sought out a Wylde Chambered barrel for this build I am doing.. One of the things I personally really LOVE about the AR is they are so stinking buildable and tunable, down right FUN for an old geezer wanna be shooter to tinker with.. I JUST finished putting mine together, sat down here for a few minutes and already found another Wylde chambered barrel that I want to pick up.. A 24 inch fluted stainless.. Only thing is,, now I see it is available in the 224 Valkerie - little more range, less effected by cross winds.. Seriously, I guy could have 9mm, 7.62x39, 224 Valk and on and on and on by using the same lower and upper reciever and only swap out barrels, bolt carrier groups and magazines... SO MUCH FUN!! Almost makes not being to ride long distance tolerable .

I got some video but its late.. Here are some pics of my progress.. DSCN7999.JPGDSCN7997.JPGDSCN7992.JPGDSCN7994.JPGDSCN7995.JPGDSCN7996.JPGDSCN8000.JPGDSCN7998.JPG

This is my AR it is a Rugger AR 5.56 I still stay the military style.

BEAUTIFUL shooter there Tuffy!! I like the original style A LOT but I am building one of the later M4 platforms (flat back). I chose the ModKey furniture for ease of hanging stuff on like a 27 inch retractable Bipod (I cant shoot prone anymore cause of health but sitting and kneeling are still doable) on.. I am also laying a 6-24 scope on it (got a 3-9 with BDC if that dont work out).. I picked up an old 1600 yard Range Finder for 40 bucks that works EXCELLENT, going take a perch over looking the swamp not far from here where you can see for MILES and pick me off some dead brances, leaves and the like wayyyyyyyyyyy out there :big-grin-emoticon:. I cut my teeth shooting with guys who served in WW2 - the real deal stuff. One of them was my girlfriends dad who served in the Pacific theater and saw a lot of action. Because of him, I got involved with Turkey shoots and shooting dynamite at 200 yards for prize = TONS OF FUN!! The love of long range shooting is still in there brother:missingtooth:

Alright Puc, your "frozen in the house" posts have got me spending money.:mo money: Decided to upgrade one of my 1911 pistols. Chose the Remington R1 in its stock form for the custom work. Checking out Ed Brown, Wilson Combat and Storm Lake match barrels. May go with a threaded barrel. Will install adjustable rear sights and front if needed. Have had this weapon since Remington first announced them and it handles well but consistent shot placement has been an issue. Not an age thing since others who have shot it agree.:backinmyday: Nothing like my two matched Colt Government Enhanced which were dead on out of the box. Have thought about this work for some time and your rachet jawing videos pushed me over the edge. Will also look into recoil springs per your previous reply on a different post. Can get a 16 lb. spring, that ought to send that spent casing into the next county. This will save policing the area.:thumbsup2::clap2:

Why,, you are welcome on the encouragement to :mo money:on your shooter Sly!! You didnt mention that you did this but I aint shy Sly,, I will mention it any way.. It's also OK if you told your wife that it was all my fault that you did so,,, as a matter of fact,, the last shooter I bought I think I may have mentioned your name to Tippy in that same context so if you did,, we are square :dancefool:

I have owned and operated the 1911's for a good while BUT am an amature when it comes to accurizing and tuning,,, sort of like my relationship with these 1st Gens I been riding for a while,, I just figure out through experimentation what works for me and leave it at that.. That said,, what I do is keep a full set of recoil springs around for my GI 1911 (it's the 5 inch = this DOES make a difference if ordering springs,, if you have a Commander model = they are shorter barreled and take different springs). When I order new springs I like to buy full sets cause they seem to be cheaper and I like having a variety to tune with. I am going to leave a couple links below to show you how/where I get mine. When I ever I get a new set in I always measure them and trim them to length so they are field ready. I do that with set of side cutters and then deburr them with a dremel. It always works best for me to NOT trim on the progressive end of the spring that lays against the barrel stop/slide over the guide rod. I trim them so they dont stack up and bottom out (sort of like can happen on a set of forks) as this can be hard on the gun. The way I "tune" is by watching where my cases are landing = I like a 6' landing. If they are landing wayyyy out there in never land, IMHO it could be not stiff enough spring to handle the load and risking damaging the gun, a heavier spring will bring the case landing closer in.. To close in though (under 6') and it can cause jamming = especially stove piping. Its amazing how easy it is tune to perfecting with a full set of springs. Do you tune differently? I would be THRILLED to hear ANY suggestions you (or anyone for that matter) could suggest if you know of something I am doing wrong,, or could improve on what I have been doing (this old dog can still be taught new tricks and WELCOMES them!!:hurts:).

I like to carry my recoil springs into the field with me cause one never knows what ammo one of my buddies may lay on my at any given time. As you know, if VERY simple to pop in a new spring if shooting +p or going from 150 to 230 grain..

Thanks Puc, those are good links. I will order them. I have not been much of a tuner per say, but a shooter. The leagues I shoot in have one thing in common, for the majority of the members they use one smith. Tommy Abernathy runs a gun shop called "Tommy Guns" and he builds race guns and customs. He has done my work. That is why I am using the Remington for my trials, since I now have time to do it and the R1 doesn't have a $2000 + value.

PS: Wife knows nothing about my guns and that is the way it will stay.

Speaking of race guns. I used to do a lot of bowling pin shoots with a shotgun (and many other guns). With my 11-87 I got to the point that I was waiting for the next round to finish chambering so I could shoot again. this was limiting me to 5 pins in 2.6 seconds. I did some playing with changing out springs and going to titanium parts and have gotten it down to 2.3 seconds. I still need to find ways to get the gun faster, I am still waiting for the gun. But it sure is fun messing with stuff. I do still use this same gun for birds, small game and deer hunting. Even though I did all the work to get it faster it will still function perfectly with the lightest trap loads up to the heaviest 3" magnum loads.

Never was that big on the whole bowling thing,, kinda boring BUT,, I gotta say,, THAT method of bowling Fool - I LIKE:missingtooth:.. YOU is my kinda people @Flyinfool,,, naughty in an ice in the veins sort of way = especially if your of the Bowling Pin breed :big-grin-emoticon:

Just grabbed a stainless 22lr drop in BCG (Bolt Carrier Group) and conversion mags for the Wylde Chambered 556 AR I am building on an Ebay auction = CHEAP (75 bucks)!! Pretty cool looking outfit.. Figured with .22lr and 556/223 being the same diameter the probabilty of seeing some form of accuracy is better than 60%.

Here is the one I got coming, take a peek at the design.. Notice the 556 "empty" stuck on the end of the BCG.. INGENIUS you engineers are!!

Now that is cool stuff you old gun toting, bike riding, and probably feeble minded (like me) fellow.:backinmyday: Like to put one on my custom AK47.:happy34:

Have ordered the Wilson Combat threaded barell with and sights for my R1 and the recoil springs you turned me on to. Again thanks. Took the slide to my smith to have the dove tails re-cut to fit the Novak sights. Remington uses the old 1911 narrow cuts. Going with tritium front and plain rear adjustable.

Shooting is such fun and very relaxing.

Feeble is as feeble does my brother!! But not so feeble we don't enjoy the shooting AND making em run!!! Sounds like you got a REALLY good keeper sprouting there Sly! Definitely on the right track as far as I am concerned! What's the gunsmith charging you to cut a new dove tail? THAT sounds AWESOME!! I got a Ruger MK1 22 that I picked up brand new back in the early 70's that has had a couple gazillion rounds run thru it but still a good shooter that I been thinking of have drilled and tapped to toss on a couple little Picatanny strips on so I could put a decent set of mounts on it. See,,, feeble really is as feeble does brother,,, YOU inspired me right back Sly:thumbsup:... :scratchchin: I wonder if I am to feeble to take my verniers and scribe a lite center line down the top of a receiver, lay the picatannies on the line and center punch the holes, drill and tap it all on my own :happy34:

Hey Puc, grab that receiver and take a quick swim across the pond, (it's not that cold, trust me :whistling: ) I just happen to know someone with a milling machine hiding in the basement, get those holes good to 4 decimal places.

Yea swim to Fools pad and get it right. :snow:

I have rails on my MK III and they are nice. Have a red dot for it but haven't sighted it yet. Still getting the jamming issues corrected. Ruger did pretty good on it after replacing firing pin swivel and ejector. Shot 140 rnds through it yesterday with one jam. That was with the Winchester Super X. The Federal copper plated ran flawless. I will pick up some CCI mini mags soon and probably Remington gold. I will shoot the rest of the Winchester or maybe keep it for my Ruger SR22.

I am waiting on the quote for the dovetail milling but probably $120 +/-.:mo money: Other option is a slide change but that would probably cost much more.

Forgot to mention that it is in the 70s here in happy land. Broke sweat cleaning the garage yesterday and it felt so good I am going to do it again today.:scorched:

Now THAT is plain pure raw simple antaginisticly wrong = filed under a flyinFOOLishness level of :stickpoke::stirthepot::witch_brew::happy34:. We are COVERED in a 1/2 inch of ice here. Power dropped off several times during the night as a result of that lop eared evil varmint across the pond tinkering with his +32 chemical mix for high tempt White Wash,, just naught,, pure naughtiness :mugshot:!

Sounds like you southners REALLY got it going on brother:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

If I was down there I would skip the working and sweating part, grab Maggy the R1 and take er out to her "race track" to see if she can still straighten those curves.. Wont be long now,,, just a few more weeks!!:240:

My MK1 had NO problem cycling the cheap stuff like Thunderbolts for many thousands of rounds. Then it slowly started demanding the more expensive plated bullets (instead cheap all lead, uncoated). I keep it clean (simple little arm on the back of the grip = pull it down and out, slide the action out and go to town). I found out that by keeping my magazine clean too REALLY helped for a long time. Then I finally ended up buying a new magazine for it and then it went right back to normal.. They (the MK1's) seem to really like the tightness of the a new mag.. Something to consider..

WOWZY WOW WOW WOW = a HUGE thank you for the offer brother!! Why ohh why did you and I have to end up with this +40 mile wide pond between us? Thinking of how much fun we could have (and trouble we could into) if we actually lived across the street from each other!!!

Thanks Jeff, I REALLY do appreciate the thought!!

Seems odd that you mentioned the magazines since I just ordered two yesterday. Got to check the house for video or listening bugs.:smash2: One of the two that came with the gun used, doesn't drop out and needs a tug on it. I purchaced the gun used from a serious target shooter and it has lots of miles on it but looks new. He had it set up for steel plates for speed shooting. Happy that Ruger honored the warranty.

I think it might be down rite dangerous if we lived across the street from each other....... Maybe even illegal......:rasberry::duck::stirthepot:

I have been told that I do NOT need any encouragement.

Just think how accurate I could be with the nozzles at that range, pile it all right in front of your door.....:moon::snow2::stirthepot:

Sunday I am going to the range with a friend to sight in the lasers and fire the Judge for the first time I have a 45 acp,40 S&W,9mm and the Judge that I have .410 and 45 colt to try in it.

NICE @tufftom4,, REALLY REALLY NICE!!!

We are still in frost bite land here on Michigan's West Coast and I am still building on the AR15.. This FINALLY came in today!! I did manage to get my new trigger installed into the lower receiver just before this arrived. I am really excited to get it on a bench rest and see how the 22lr's work thru it. I have a brick of Aquilla's, a brick of Mini Mags and a couple hundred CCI Velocitor's coming for it but it would be AWESOME if it would run on those cheapy Thunderbolts like I run thru my MK1 - I got a few thousand of those things laying around.

You ever check out "Ammoseek.com"? It's an AWESOME ammo buying search engine, VERY POWERFUL!! Here,, here's a link:

I buy a lot of ammo off there as well as off following Gunbroker.. I just landed a thousand rounds of 556 green tip (military spec penatrators) military over runs (brand new, brass casings and 62 grain) for 200 bucks = 20 cents a round..

I got it from the same seller that I picked up the 200 grain FN's I been running in my 1911..

Nothing like talking guns on a sub zero windchill COLD winter night :big-grin-emoticon:DSCN8007.JPGDSCN8006.JPGDSCN8004.JPGDSCN8003.JPGDSCN8002.JPGDSCN8001.JPG
