Did you buy it? :scratchchin:

Oh man - if only! It has 4 forward speeds. To reverse, you have to turn the engine off, put in reverse, start again and you have 4 reverse gears!

Seen them online and I think I have a diecast in my collection. The only real one that I saw was at the Tupelo, MS auto museum.

Hey Ken,

The original version was the KR 175 and production was started in 1955 by Regensburger Stahl- u. Maschinenbau, Regensburg, Germany. It had a single cylinder 2 stroke Fichtel and Sachs motor. It was designed by a German Engineer, Fritz Fend and they were built in the old Messerchmitt Plane factory after world war II from 1955 to 1964. There was a 2 seater model KR 200 and a 1 seater roadster model, KR 201. There were about 40,000 total units made.

What a cool Car! Is this a new neighbor of yours?!?! :thumbsup2:

Earl

Hi Earl - no, not a new neighbor. A buddy was helping me clean out some stuff - actually I gave him a work bench and we hauled it over to his place. His neighbor. Never new a car like that existed!

Yes I have. When I was a kid my friends neighbor had a red one. Got to set in it, I think I was about 13 or 14 at the time. The neighbor had a heavy equipment parts warehouse and would assemble these cars and sell them. Would also see a white and red one once in a while at the AC Spark Plug factory where my Mother worked along with one of those little cars that the whole front of the car, steering wheel and all would swing open so you could get in. BMW Isetta Bubble Car.

Here's a Morgan and Isetta from the same museum.

Several years ago there was one of those things in a nearby town (Woodstock) and the guy drove it quite a bit and even drove it to work.

I've forgot how long ago but it was for sale and it seems like the guy wanted 3 or 4 grand for it. It was one of the front opening ones.

I also got the impression that it would only do maybe 40 or 45 miles an hour.

Cute but not something I would want. But at least you would be dry I guess.

BOO

Hey Ken, You bring back such memories with those pics. :thumbsup2:

My widowed aunt, with six! children had a "schmitt" and we used to pack into it like sardines when I was a kid.

You'd be amazed at how many kids' we could get in there, but needed someone on the outside to shut the lid  It was a real case of "Stack 'em and rack 'em":crackup::crackup:

There were quite a few neat 'little' cars available in the late 50's to mid 60's. Here's one that most people have never even heard of. Lloyd. I owned a '59 and it was my primary transportation while going to college. Air cooled 30hp, 5sp, front wheel drive, 35mpg. Drove the 'H' out of it for 5 or 6 years. Bought it brand new for $999 out the door.

I might also add I don't think I could get in one now.... Was a lot skinnier back then.... :)

That looks like the one Steve Urkel drove in the TV show Family Matters

A guy in Chatham, Ontario where I used to live had several of these and would tell me stories about their history. If I recall from his stories, they might have become the "peoples car" in Germany except for other circumstances. In any event, I sometimes followed him on some local rides on my motorcycle. It was amazing to see how nimble and quick they were.
