Most likely it will be done in our motorcycle garage/shop. I have come to appreciate being able to do extra stuff like really good cleaning, polishing, additional maintenance, etc. when I have things apart. When I get close to starting I'll start a thread. I'm certain I'll need bunches of pointers and advice such as a list of gaskets etc. as well as other recommended repairs, replacements, upgrades to do while the engine is out. Still looking forward to seeing the Hell Yea's pics!

Thanks for the threads. I really love my bike so I'll do whatever's needed. After all, if I were in love with another bike I could very well be in for 20 or 30 grand. In a since its kinda just a drop in the bucket. Not to imply that I don't have to stay on a budget... But my motorcycle costs could be skyward. Sent from my moto X

I have been researching. I have found the original Yamaha Technical Bulletin. I'm wondering about postings for this issue. When I search with 2nd gear as the criteria I don't get many results. Certainly there must be some good postings. However I have run across a pretty good posting on engine removal. I think it was on the other venture website. I think I bookmarked it somewhere. It seems like the biggest part of the project is removing and reinstalling the engine. One of the mechanics at the local Yamaha dealer has been there for 30 years and he is pretty familiar with most venture issues. He said labor would be about 1200 dollars. That being said 1200 dollars that opens up a lot of options. Love this bike! Sent from my moto X

Thank you to each and everyone who has viewed and/or replied. Your condolences, comfort and sympathetic understanding has been welcome and frankly... very much needed. Thank you sooo very much. For those of you who are not familiar with the breed, it is actually the German Spitz. The breed name was changed during WW2. They really have no other connection to America or Eskimos. As the evolution of dog breeds go, they are still relatively primitive. They were bred down out of the larger Nordic breeds for companionship, warmth (sleeping with), burglar-alarm and bodyguard. And they are pretty good at it. When challenged, they can be fierce...such as a badger or a wolverine. But for sleeping with, they are just about like any other pillow... flip it over, flop it around, throw it off if it's in the way... whatever. They are also extremely clean with virtually no smell, not even much "wet-dog" smell. But some can be temperamental. ...still... I miss my friend...

Maybe so, or it may have been lost in the fight. I'm certain that rattler was slung aroung quite violently.

Last Saturday, Bella, our 34 lb Eskimo Dog went to battle with a 5'3" Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake right in the middle of our backyard. This mature snake had lost it's rattle... It was basically a silent killer living in our neighborhood. Bella was bitten 4 times... on her snout, ear, arm and inside of her mouth. She too, inflicted several (4) fatal bites... 2 of which broke the snakes spine, 1 penetrated it's intestinal tract. We had been out to breakfast for about 2 hours. When we came home and discovered the situation, Bella was deep under a fairly good-size shed. We had to cut the floor out with a circular saw to rescue her. At the Animal Emergency Hospital she received 2 vials of Antivenin but did not recover. Minutes before passing she gave us a hearty tail-wag She was a fierce warrior! She laid down her life and because of it our neighborhood is a safer place... ...But still... I miss my friend... In Bella's honor I have skinned the snake and it is in tanning solution. I will post a photo when it is complete.

reliable ride
yamagrl replied to Florida G's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Most people buy these bikes because they LOVE THEM. Most folks do not buy a 1984 Firebird for "reliable transportation". Mine is serving me quite well... West Fl to Houston 1200 round trip... West Fl To Cleveland area 2300 round trip. The only maint issue was the sidestand broke. And I must admit... that's a terrible inconvenience! Dingy got me fixed up...Thanks Dingy. Actually as long as I ride regularly Big Red does great... Starts up with no or little choke, consistently gets 40+, embarrasses most other bikes... I love it. The bottom line is these bikes "Love to be loved" Remember guys... When she ain't happy, you ain't happy -
Where does this go?
yamagrl replied to Donvito's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I believe those are called hitch pins. The only place i have seen them (so far) on my 84 1st Gen is on the joint where the driver backrest attaches. Good luck -
Where did you get them and what is the cost? I have been thinking about doing the same. They l ook great

What is a drop panel lift? The exhaust seems to be seriously in the way of using a regular motorcycle lift. -

Rear Bearings First Gen
yamagrl replied to yamagrl's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Seems like additional support will be needed to remove the front wheel. I am working on a front support/stand to augment the center-stand. Got it all drawn out. Now I just need to go out to the shop and fabricate it. If it functions as well under Big Red as it does in the space between my ears, I'll post a pic and drawing of it . :cool10: -

OK! Great! Thanks Guys! The parts are now on order...along with a few extras... It seems like you guys often have a few extra parts left over and since I' not sure where they come from I went ahead and ordered a few extras for myself...just in case! Does anyone have any tips that they may be willing to share concerning the replacement of the bearings, rear wheel removal, etc. The way I see it...the thing to do is: Tie hair back Remove nail color and go ahead and break one now (just to get it over with)...and cuss about it... A LOT! (just to get past this, too) Open book to appropriate section. Place "Big Red" (you gave your's a name, right?) on the centerstand (see my previous post Jacking up a First Gen?) and then... *** Drum roll, please*** ... nothin' to it... but to do it! -

Thanks for the help and advice. I have been looking at the breakdown and I am wondering if I will also need #15 Oil Seal and #23 Collar? They look like they might do the same thing for the right side that #4 and #7 do for the left. Whatcha think? -
1984 XVZ1200DL What is the best source for rear wheel bearings? Are sealed bearings available for the rear? Both sides? I have ordered new tires, front and rear. I think it may be a good idea to replace the bearings at the same time. I have located and ordered the front ones:fingers-crossed-emo:
