Sounds like a good reason to eliminate it. Sent from my moto X -

What is a "Jason mod"? The yics provides an attachment point for the upper fairings, right? I'll look into it further when I am at my computer. Was it done away with on the Mark II or the 2nd Gen? Sent from my moto X -

Thanks Neil86, I will look into that. I'm sure if there are vacuum leaks in the yics then something would need to be done. I will pressure test and submerge the yics. Seems like it could be plastic welded. Whatta you think? Sent from my moto X -

Just set the valves at SE texas Maint day. Squidley helped me out. One was still a bit tight so Ill have to get a thinner shim for that one. Perfect time. Thanks for the reminder. Also, I am heading to Harbor Freight this morning to get an engine stand. It seems like a good way to hold/flip the engine when working on it. -

Hmm... Maybe I'll consider doing it myself after I get it openen up and can determine the damage. I still have to order gaskets, forks etc so its not much of a time delay. Any other advice regarding undercutting? Sent from my moto X -

Betcha thought I chickened out, Huh? Naw.. my uncle died, so things were kinda put on hold for a couple of weeks. I got back to things this morning. About nine o'clock I removed the bags and rolled Big Red (Secretariat) up onto the lift. This is what he looked like then... When I shut the lights off at six-thirty (with about two hours of breaks) this is what he looked like. Tomorrow I'll roll Big Red off the lift and slide the engine out. Then remove the transmission and middle gear. I have decided to ship the transmission to a Murdoch Racing Enterprises in the Tampa, FL area and let them go over it. They will back cut, magnaflux, check for trueness, etc. Instead of me fooling around with it and trying to figure out which stuff is bad. It might cost me a bit more, but who cares, right? Big Red is "The Man". -

Yes 86-93. I do not think (hope) there is massive wear. What do you think about under cutting? Sent from my moto X -

From what I gather, the dilemma is happening at about the normal mileage. I have 58k. What I plan is to do is: 1. order all of the seals, gaskets, etc that I know will have to be replaced. On the outside chance that there is no damage or wear that would require replacement of other components. 2. Remove the engine, disassemble the trans but leave the motor side of things alone for now. I am aware that there is likely damage to the #1 shifting fork, #2 gears, drive axle, shift fork guide bars as well as a host of other things. But... I do have my fingers crossed. 3. Fix transmission 4. Put the engine back in This will be somewhat of a learn as I go experience. Thanks for the offer... I will likely call. Tomorrow (Mothers Day, Go figure!) I will undress it, drain oil, coolant, remove starter, air box, karber-eighters and whatever else to get ready to lift that "mother" out. Maybe I'll have it ou tomorrow and maybe not. Either way, after that, I have to work next week. So it will be sloww going until the end of the week. I do not plan to get in a big hurry, but I don't plan on making a career out of it either. I have Big Red to ride. Working, polishing etc. is secondary. -

Where do I find the video of rebuild? I think I will most likely not tear into the motor side of things. 58k on the clock. So most of the engine should be still in pretty good shape I think its a good gamble to leave it alone and fix the transmission Sent from my moto X -
Second gear is skipping quite often now and it is time to "Bite the bullet!" My biggest hesitation is that I will not be able to ride Big Red for a while and I fear the withdrawl symptoms of stopping cold turkey. After reading about it and researching a bit I have decided to do it myself (mostly). Not long after I hooked up with Big Red I realized that I was hopelessly in love with this "Hunk" of a motorcycle! I have since forsaken nail polish for grease and gunk. I have a bit of various mechanics background. Any-whoo... I do have a few questions... In one of the postings the author said that he removed the rear wheel and drive shaft, then reinstalled it to facilitate moving the bike around. Is it easier to get the wheel and drive shaft out or is it easier to get the motor off of the drive shaft? Should the oil pump be replaced or are there particular components that should be replaced besides the seals & o-rings listed? Should the water pump be replaced or the drive gear, impeller etc? I think I read something about middle gear backlash. (seems like a good time to do this?) Pointers? Threads? Certainly I will be chiming in with a plethora of questions. I'll post pics periodically. Here are the links to the postings I plan to kinda follow. http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/?action=article&cat_id=001006&id=250 http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=508 Of course, I also have the Tech Bulletin as well as the Yamaha Service manual, print and pdf.

Of course there is good reason to keep your OS up to date. I would be wary of any other advice. That being said, First_N_Last offered some easier alternatives that may very well suite your needs. However, the sooner you do the proper updates and upgrades the easier it will be. The longer you wait, the more updates to install. An up-to-date OS often renders the alternatives unnecessary.

Yes. You will need to check for windows updates first 8.1 will not even be available until 8.0 is up to date. Then you can do the full 8.1 upgrade and then install Classic Start 8 and you will be able to function primarily as win7 with the apps still avail. Sent from my moto X

Going down, the trip in the keys is best in the morning hours. You'll have the sun at your back. KW is my hometown. I made 7 trips down in 11 & 12 (4 on Bike) while my brother had lung cancer. If you have occasion to go into "Ricks" which is directly across Duval from Sloppy Joe's stop in. My brother worked there for 20 yrs. His name was Andy and he was an avid HD guy. El Siboney on Catherine St is as good as any cubano restaraunt anywhere. It is kinda off the beaten path and most of the patrons are locals. If you are religious St Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church is now a Basilica

I did not not mean to imply that a touchscreen is required. RandyR if you have experienced no challenges with the mouse then I commend your fortune. Keep digging... I'm a huge fan of 8.1. Thanks for the reinforcement! Sent from my moto X

Win8 ROCKS! It is designed to work with touch screen. It blends the best of the "Tablet" concept and Apps with the power of a full blown computer. The biggest issue it has is that many/most folks do not have touch screen. Therefore, working some of the functions with a mouse/touchpad requires a bit of patience as well as a bit of trial and error. And still a few things I have yet to find a way around. Microsoft is planning on officially announcing the "development" of Windows 9 (this month, I think). I don't think they announced a release date, yet. I believe the problem is user understanding. Once I figured it out, Win8 is the most powerful and functionally the easiest version of Windows yet. I have used most all of them. My first PC ran MSDOS version 2.3 (early eighties, 5 1/4 flops and had to learn how to code just to make it do anything). Certainly Win8 needs improvement, which I'm sure Windows 9 will probably bring. It will not be called Win8 and it'll have a different look. But, I think it will simply be an improved version of Windows8. We have been through it all before; 95 Crashed on Bill Gates, 98 had problems leading to the release of 98 SE (2nd edition), ME was OK but it wasn't out long before Win2000. XP was great, Vista had issues that were improved in Win7....Nothing new... even Apple has issues. Windows is simply the evolution of MS DOS. To this day, DOS functions are still integrated into all versions of Windows. The program that enables the user to use Win8 like Win7 is called Classic Start 8. You can find it here http://www.classicstart8.com/. You can also find it and several others like it on Windows Store. And YES it is helpful! I use it. Most Apps are free... just like on Google Play. Some apps you have to buy and some have a paid version. The big benefit to going through Microsoft Store, Google Play or the Apple Store is that if an App has security issues it will be banned by MS, Goo, Apple. So there is a big PLUS here. Win8.1 upgrade is free to Win8 users. It is a great improvement. Your Win8 has to be up to date with all Win8 updates before Windows STORE will allow you to upgrade. $95.00 is a good price for 8 but my best advice is to stay with Win7 and apply the $95 toward a new computer with touch screen. Touchscreen laptops start around $300 (not sure about desktops). If you are still running XP make certain that you have all of the security issues under control as MS is discontinuing support. By no stretch of the imagination am I an expert, but I welcome any questions... post or PM. Once you figure it out... You'll Rock, Too!

When, in the rare occasion, I must troubleshoot an electrical issue myself, I start at the component that is not coming on. Kinda like...if the living room light won't come on, check the lightbulb before you start to mess with the switch... That being said; simply add/jump power to the compressor. In the bottom right hand area of the 86-87 Simplified Wiring Diagram (thanks Dingy) is the class compressor and the class compressor relay. You will see that the R/B is where you will need power. There should be no power in the normal state. Make sure that you have a good ground and when voltage is added, if it come on...it's good, if not... here is the problem. Viola! You have officially arrived at "Square One"

Maybe we will. Are you going to SE Texas MD on the the last weekend of March?

Yes, I was on Big Red, my beloved 84 XVZ12DL. The total ride was about 1350. About 575 up and about 800 home. It's not so much the mileage, but the fact that it was EIGHT states in one day. KY, IL, MO, AR in only 2 hour then TN, MS,AL,FL. The confluence of the rivers is absolutely amazing! This is where most of the water from the eastern states comes together with most of the water from the midwest states. Phenomenal! Often someone will ask me if it's hard to ride long distances. I always reply.. I love to ride...love-to-ride... sometimes I get on and just ... well.. I ride... it matters not whether it's 50 behind me, 500 or 1500...love to ride... No whut i meen Vern?

Last October I had ridden up to my parents home in western Kentucky and decided to have an adventurous trip home so... Left Wingo, Ky about 1030am Crossed the Ohio River from Wickliff, Ky to south of Cairo, IL About one mile later crossed the Mississippi River into MO Rode south to West Memphis, AR Back across the Mississippi to Memphis, TN Into Mississippi through Alabama and back to Florida about 5ish in the morning. It was right at 800 miles, 18.5 hours. of course I was kinda lolli-gaggin' and enjoying the ride. You can actually stand in Kentucky and look across the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, across Illinois and see Missouri in the background. Life just don't no better'n this!!! ...think I might just put this in for one of those Wild Hair Awards
