Time for second gear repair
yamagrl replied to yamagrl's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks Hell Yea, Great pic of the main/input shaft and gears. It shows an excellent comparison. I did notice on mine that the 2nd gear pinion has no dogs and that the teeth engage the 5th pinion. Every other tooth is about 2-3 mm narrower. I'm guessing this is to soften the engagement as 2nd/3rd moves over to engage 5th. It looks like a good idea to me. Is there a similar picture/comparison of the output/driven shaft and gears. That would be great! -

There is only very, very slight wear on the 5th to 2nd gear dogs. Simply dressing them up a little, just enough to alleviate a slight rounding of the "driving" edge of the dogs and keeping all three dogs even will quite likely be adequate for the gear portion of this repair. However, the original 2nd and 5th gears are not undercut. I noticed that the dogs on the other gears are. It is obvious that the undercut will physically draw the gears together, whereas the square dogs are only held in place by the shifting fork. I have heard that from 86 or so on, that the 5th/2nd gear upgrade is undercut. Is this true? If so, I am assuming that is also true for the Vmax, as well. The original 5th driven gear on the First Gen is 29T, the gear ratio is .906. The Vmax 5th driven gear is 26T. So if I keep the 32T pinion gear I'm aware 5th/2nd are mated) and use the 26T Vmax driven gear, the gear ratio would then be 26/32 otherwise .812. If the original gear ratio is .906 and the proposed gear ratio is .812 that renders a 10.4% higher 5th gear. Sorta like an overdrive. I do a good bit of city driving, a lot of highway driving and it's not very hilly here. I also do a good bit of interstate 80ish mph mostly. I'm wondering if the higher gear will be better for me overall or will performance and fuel consumption head south? If you're wondering about my driving habits...well, suffice it to say, I'm not afraid to ride it. What do you guys think? How about a few expert opinions, please. Thanks for all of the help. -

Please explain how it could be a bearing pin. The case is not yet separated and the bearings have not been disturbed. Thanks Sent from my moto X -

Speaking of red locktite, the guy in the vmax engine video (Damon, I think) said he uses red on everything inside the engine where the manual calls for loctite. What is your take on that one? Sent from my moto X -

I too had 2 carb drain screws that would not budge. I sprayed PB Blaster on them, let em sit for a while, then used a huge straight slot screwdriver and Thom and they finally broke loose. Sent from my moto X -

Pins are not avail there either. More info needed on cutting them down. What is the length? I can figure out how to cut/grind them. -

Brian, Are you talking about the segment from second Gen? Will the gen1 pins work with the second gen segment. The pins for gen2 are not avail. Heather -

It seems like this is the consensus. I also added this same post to my other active post "time for second gear repair" and that is pretty much the consensus. Thanks. Sent from my moto X -

Ok. Now that sounds reasonable considering this sticker is inside the trunk. Whatta ya think of that! For the upgrade to the newer model are you referring to 86-93? -

Nope. They are all in place. That is not yet disassembled. Here is a couple of pics so you can see what point I am at. Components removed before turning engine over and over are starter, generator cover, starter gears cover reinstalled for cleaning. Components removed after the engine is on the bench as it now sits, are the water pump, generator cover, entire clutch, oil pan -

Dingy, please tell me more. Which section of the parts breakdown would i find the gear shift segment pin? I don't see how it would have gotten out of the clutch and on the other side of the engine. the engine has not been flipped since cleaning. -

??????????? I am in the process of doing the Time for second gear repair After removing the oil pan to access the case bolts that are inside I found this pin. It is about 4mm thick x 17mm long (1/8 x 11/16) It is solid and appears to be hardened. It was just laying right here beside Bolt #21. So I'm sure it just landed there on the last flip-over during cleaning. The motor has been flipped and turned over several times during the cleaning phase. I think it may have fallen out of something while removing components such as the starter, starter gears. Before I started to clean the motor I removed the left crankcase cover (generator) and the starter gears fell out. That was when I decide to take the engine outside and clean it. So I put the generator cover back on but not the starter gears. Of course the starter motor was removed prior to engine removal.

... but a good Bubble-Bath works wonders! Looks to me like ya wouldn't want it hanging from that engine stand when ya split the case! -
fuel pump issues need help
yamagrl replied to pmelah's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Paul, since the pump is pumping a weak flow when there is no resistance but nothing when you create resistance by putting your finger over the outlet then there is likely either a hole/damage in the diaphragm (I'm guessing this is a diaphragm type pump) or one of the "one way check valves" is damaged or stuck open, perhaps a piece of trash. a pump like this has only 4 main components: 1. motor or a device to power it 2. A device to move the fluid such as a diaphragm or piston 3. One-way inlet valve 4 One-way outlet valve I'm guessing the problem is a piece of trash in the inlet valve. Back flushing is not possible if the other components are functioning... but if you can create an in/out plunging action on the inlet then you may dislodge it. A large syringe such as for injecting cattle (avail at most feed stores) is what I would try. Otherwise, your best option is another fuel pump. I have no clue about the timer mentioned above but these kind of pumps are fairly simple and straight forward. I shouldn't be too hard to fix. If its sucking air then the diaphragm is likely the problem. -
