  1. Update: after a month and a half I've finally got my stove working again. I basically wound up gutting all motors and electronics after replacing one piece at a time. Without proper dealer service in my area I was on my own. The manufacturer is little help either. Fortunately I found a sympathetic dealer in PA who helped a lot. Anyway, if anyone in need of outdoor or heating equipment, Hoffmans in Halifax PA gets my endorsement. Anyone thinking of buying a wood, pellet or coal stove, steer clear of Harman unless you connect with a great dealer or maybe are thinking of a manual burn unit. Otherwise service and support of complex electroics is a problem. Back to my bike now
  2. On Long Island, probably arrest me if I did that.
  3. None ..... I've replaced a second probe and still no fix. I have a service call scheduled for 12/2..... What a mess
  4. Coal burns much hotter, produces a lot more heat. It burns slower then wood too so a lot less daily tending. Coal grates in a manual feed coal stove are different and they have a mechanism to " shake" the coal bed to clear the ashesinto a pan below. A stove not originally meant for coal probably won't work.
  5. new Temperature Control Probe arrived, no change to the situation.
  6. Well I may have the fix identified. At the end of last season I recall bending an exhaust port probe with a cleaning brush. Didnt think much of it. Bent it back. BAD! I got a guy at Harman to talk to me (not as easy as you'd expect) and he determined that the probe is my problem most likely. I have a new probe comeing tomorrow. Meanwhile, Im digging the coal (and wood) burning stories. Very cool.... Mickey, Im big on posting weird things Aside from wife and kids, my bike is my passion and my coal stove a fun and functional hobby....although not so far this year ! anyone intrested in my whole coal story: https://picasaweb.google.com/116811512302801092027/CoalProject#
  7. Yep burning coal has gotten high tech with a unit like this but can still be low tech manual hand fed stoves as well. Those guys use larger size coal and rely on chimneys with proper draft, radiated heat from the stove but some have fans that push heat out. My unit is almost 100% automated and controlled burning. Short of loading a hopper and emptying an ash pan, its "set and go" operation......when it works ! Lighting is cake, I drop a pre packaged "coal mouse" on the grate surrounded by coal. This thing is like a highly concentrated roadflare. Lights in minutes. The problem with such technology is all that could go wrong. I finally got the manufacturer to help diagnose my problem and it may be a $50 temperature probe. On order, I'll see. This unit directly vents to the outside behind the unit, no chimney and is completely sealed. It pulls outside air in for combustion and before it pushes exhaust out it captures all the heat it can and distributes out via controller fans. What come out the exhaust isn’t nearly as hot nor toxic as you'd might imagine. I have a 2K aq ft 2 story colonial house. The unit it centrally located on the first floor and heats the whole place evenly. You can stand on my stairs and at your head your feeling heat rushing up stairs and at your feet, cooler air coming back. Amazing On Long Island there are two main coal dealers. I have to buy a size called Rice which is coal broken down to real small pcs. We only burn Anthracite coal around here. Old timers may remember Bituminous coal. Much softer and dirtier burn. North and West of me, coal is everywhere it seems. I belong to a forum and all the way to Ohio and up into all N. East states theres a lot of “us”. Anyway… Ill drop a note if the probe fixes it up. Thx
  8. Well i thought id take a shot here...... Resurect an old thread i started and reach out to the group...... My 4th year with this stove hasnt started off well. Im looking for anyone with Harman Stove experiance (or connections) specifically this DVC500.... Either the draft motor or the combustion motor or both is shot..... Or the electronics that control them are....or the sensors that tell the electronics whats going on are shot. Both motors turn freely but under normal settings they arent running as expected. I can force the unit into TEST mode and all motors spin up to full speed so im leaning towards electronics or sensors. Dealer reminds me im 2 mths out of warranty, $110/hour plus parts and Harman refers me back to the dealer......meanwhile its 37degrees, bikes in the garage and im burning oil which is not good! Any input appreciated of course.
  9. Congrats. Nice to see another Long Islander active on the forum! .... I think that brings the count to 4 I have an 03 Midnight.... That's a good deal you described. Great bike. Good luck with it. Andrew (Holtsville)
  10. Thats it. Paid the same and did plenty of research. At one time Tim at Works said he'd give a discount when i mentioned this forum but he later reneged. Hagon makes a good shock, less expensive and i was going that way but they didnt have one with a beefy enough spring for me. They now claim they do. Anyway I just got my Works shock a few weeks back. My factory shock only made it to 16k miles. its been great. Id talk to the Hagon guys as well.... http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=63308
  11. The chrome nut on top of the triple tree? Never even thought to check it! Im on it. Thx for the tip
  12. Tried my first can of SeaFoam this weekend before a long ride. Bikes been running rough for a long time. Had the carbs syncd which helped for a while but not perfect. Still rough and a little backfiring. Put half a can in a full tank, put the rest in on next tank and thats it, im sold. This engine runs smooth as new. No popping and i can totally feel the thing is smoother with nearly no engine vibration. I didnt pay attention to mpg but i will and assume i should see an improvement. So you know when you buy something like this you want it to work to the point you believe it is whether it is or not. I dont think thats the case here. I was very aware of this all day and beleive it does what it and everyone here said. Great product. Just bought 10 cans for me and my pals using the code. Thanks!
  13. My Works shock is working great, been about 1k mikes. Made another round of adjustments to rebound adjuster and the ride is perfect. As far as the front end; on the lift, front wheel off the ground, no noticble movement or clicking when i grab the forks. The stop - stop bounce test was a bit too bouncy so i used the cheat method to tighten the steering nut and its much better now, i dont feel the clicking i mentioned anymore. Thx
  14. Thanks guys. Im checking the front end again this weekend. Appreciate the tips.
  15. I thought i read that there should not be any bounce back when the wheels off the ground and the front end is pushed to one side. I get one click in the bars when i hit the front brake every time. I assumed the while thing is loose. .....will look at it tomorrow.
  16. 2-Up, 5 hour ride today and the ride quality was great. Not too stiff and not bouncy. Pretty happy with the settings, the shock and the company. *however now i can identify a problem in the front end. Hit the brakes hard enough and theres a clicking. Get it up on the jack and the front end swings pretty freely with a little bounce back on both sides. I assume the steering nut needs to be tightened. I see a way to snug it up without taking the front end apart. ....ugh! Red spring , Blue spring? I assume the red one is for us heavy weights
  17. Well I'm feeling pretty lucky. Spent a good amount if time in adjyst mode yesterday and what worked best for me was leaving the spring tension where it was at and adjusting the rebound damper two clicks softer. Feeling like the right ride now. Probably an obvious suggestion : I marked the starting position of the spanner nut and the rebound adjuster with a Sharpie since these were supposed to be ideal settings by the tech based on my profile and ride style. Also. I was concerned about the difficulty in making adjustments given how buried the shock is. The rebound adjuster is easily accessible. With the right side passenger floorboard and plastic cover behind it off and using the tool Works ships (see orig photo) the spring tension is easy to adjust as well. Happy Works customer
  18. Going to make some adjustments tomorrow. Yes, the rebound adjuster has clicks as its turned. I tried b4 install. Each click position was about 1/8 around.
  19. 3 hour ride on the new shock. I equate the ride feel to sitting on a "super pinky". Anyone remember those very firm foam balls you'd play stick ball with? Too firm I suspect. Ill play with the rebound adjuster next......otherwise it's still great!
  20. My shock shipped on time and arrived yesterday from Works. Followed the instructions on the other Venture site and in under an hour i was test riding it. Other them removing the right side saddle bag for visability, i didnt remove any other major part. A swivel socket and extension bar did the trick for the top bolt and the old crusty shock dropped out. New one fit right in there with mild persuassion. Easy job. (Another big thumbs up for my CarbonOne lift adapter) I measured the sag or whatever its called and it seemed to be pre set. Initial ride was great but after 2 months of no shock anything would have been an improvement. Im sure this thing will work out great. bTW, Hagon Shocks called me this week to tell me they finally got the heavy weight springs in stock. Too late for me but i was going with them based on reviews, one year longer warranty and a better price. Hagon might now be an option if your built like me (big boned )
  21. Well Works quoted 3 weeks, today is exactly 3 weeks from order date and its shipping today! Hoping for good results.....
  22. Thanks. The sturgis reference was funny. Flb-78,What do you supposed the foamed up water was? Ill get out there and inspect further.
  23. 2003 15K miles first OEM shock just gave out Works should be shipping my new shock this week!
  24. Any A/C experts? Our 14year old Friedrich giant wall AC crapped out last night, or so we think. It sounded like the compressor shut off. The fan was still running. Nothing i did could get the compressor back on. The filter was packed clogged though. Gave up, went to sleep. Today, no power. Main breaker tripped. Put that back on and the unit turns on and now the compressors back on. However, for 10 mins, foamy looking water was pouring out of the rear of the unit. This stopped and all seems ok. although the air doesnt seem as cool as it was, its not getting warmer after being back on for 2hours so far. Anyone have an idea what happaned here?
