carb questions
MiCarl replied to venture83_98's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Before you pull them off...... Shut off the fuel tap. Idle the motorcycle until it starts to stumble then switch the fuel back on. See if the problem clears up. It's possible you picked up a piece of debris out of the fuel line or something and the above procedure may flush it out. -
Tire Balance
MiCarl replied to Money Venture's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I had a similar problem (but rear) on a new tire I installed for a customer. He could feel the bike going up and down at low speed. It turned out the tire had a flat spot about the size of my hand that was about 2mm out of round. For awhile we looked closely at all the tires we did. 2mm out of round was not unusual. Generally though the out of round condition was gradual over the circumference of tire - like it wasn't quite centered or a bit elliptical. The one that could actually be felt was almost perfect except the 2mm came and went in only about 6". -
carb questions
MiCarl replied to venture83_98's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
No, unfortunately #42 is not the fitting. The fitting is/was not sold separately from the carb body. You can dry set them. While not perfect that should get the level close enough that it doesn't overflow. I think it was Squidley did a measurement some time back. IIRC the measurement was 1" from the bottom of the chamber to the top of the float just when the needle closes (you don't want to invert it where the float might compress the spring). Bottom line is the float should be pretty much horizontal (as installed on the motorcycle) when the needle closes. If you didn't replace the needles you might want to do that when you tear them apart. -
carb questions

Agreed. #4 is over filling. Did you check the fuel levels when you did them? Do you know how to check them now? -
Besides the swing arm you also have to get the tire in past the drive hub. As I recall it's a pretty tight fit with the stock tire. Although I suppose you could pull the final drive to get it in/out.

Agreed. There is a small hole on the side near the top. Yours might be pointing toward the wheel. It's best to replace it. The part you're missing is to keep dirt and water out.

I wonder how many unique codes the key fobs really have. It might be as simple as having the box transmit a couple hundred and the door unlocks. I protect myself by having nothing worth stealing......

89 Venture Royale shifting

1st gen. -
It's not backfeed. It's ignition noise being picked up by the wiring for the passenger mic. Adequate grounded shielding should solve the problem. I thought of shielding the cable but couldn't come up with a quick, easy, cheap solution. It just occurred to me that shielding the coil should do the trick. That would be easy to do with a piece of a tin can bolted right up with the coil mounting bolts.
-
In case you want to try my "fix". The passenger audio cables run along the right side of the frame, under the #4 plug wire and right beside the coil (#4 is the only one exposed by simply removing the tank). There are two cables there and you can sort out the correct one by moving it away from the coil while listening. I re-routed the offending cable along the top of the frame, to the left of the coolant fill. I didn't have to disconnect the cable but did unfasten the coil rather than fishing the plug wire out. Quiet as a church mouse now.

I have a 2008 RSV in the shop that developed ignition ticking in the intercom. Investigation showed that disconnecting the #4 ignition coil eliminated the noise. The passenger audio cable was routed right alongside the #4 cable and well anchored so it's been there since before the noise began. Re-routing the cable along the center of the frame, away from the coil, has eliminated the noise. I'm wondering why this would occur after being fine previously. Do any of you with audio or ignition knowledge know whether I should suspect the coil or a bad ground on the audio cable?

Yamaha calls for DOT4. The difference is DOT4 has a higher boiling point, not an issue in the clutch. Still, why have 2 open cans.

I think you'll find the 2nd gen (Royal Star Venture) much like your Wing in the handling department. What it does give is LOTS of room for long legs. The 1st gen Venture (83-92) is a sport tourer. Handling is very responsive. Either will initially feel quite heavy to you, but that goes away above 5mph. I am 53 years old, have a 32" inseam and ride an '89. The foot position is right below the hips and a bit cramped. I sometimes get cramping in my thighs from lifting my feet back to the pegs after a stop. It might be a unique problem to me though......

jet kit with out drilling
MiCarl replied to speakerfritz's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
You're going to all the trouble to pull the carbs off the bike and install jets but drilling out 4 little aluminum plugs is too inconvenient? Get the plugs out and do the job right. -
My thoughts: 1) Too much trouble to unstrap them from the trailer. 2) When they are stolen the owners are afraid that if they report the theft the police will bring it back.

Cause for very rich mixture ?
MiCarl replied to quant55's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The air cut of diaphragms are probably not causing it to be rich. They're more likely to make it go lean. They should be replaced though. The most likely reason for rich is float level set too high or float needles leaking. After that you need to look into whether it has the correct jets or potentially someone enlarged them cleaning with a piece of wire. It's also possible the gasket on the jet block is leaking and allowing extra fuel in. -
Mystery part...What is this pin?
MiCarl replied to yamagrl's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Pin from shift sector perhaps. If you have all yours compare it to them. It's entirely possible one was lost in the case before the motorcycle became yours. -
Identify this connector please
MiCarl replied to Razorback's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
IIRC the first one just hangs there to make you wonder if something is disconnected........ Other might be the connector to the turn signal. -
89 VR Oil Leak left side of engine
MiCarl replied to Drewman's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
It could also be leaking around the stator wires. Pull the rubber cover off the clutch bleed screw and have a look in there. On mine it was easier to see with the motorcycle warmed up and running. -
The only possible reason I see for the pin is to orient the protrusion. They wanted that protrusion in a particular spot for some reason. The kit from Skydoc has neither the pin nor the protrusion. Next time you pull them apart make sure the pin doesn't stick through the bottom of the slide. You don't want that guy stirring up the air flow.

Now I'll have to dig into my memory (I did this early spring). Numbers not guaranteed.... I had guessed I might need to drop them 20 - 40/1000". I asked a machinist I know to make me a set at -0.060" from stock. I've got a box of 0.020" washers that I figured I could use to richen it back up from the -60. Then I decided to order Skydoc's kit to see what he was doing. I believe his shims measured at -0.060" from stock so I put them in and asked the machinist to not bother. I like my results (plugs look good) at -0.060" so I've left it there. I did a full sync and set the mixtures. Unfortunately I did not pay attention to how much I backed them out. BTW, 0.060" ~ 1.5mm. It is definitely lean just off idle. Until it's good and warmed up it's got a bit of a flat spot. The days of starting it up and immediately turning the choke off are gone. Does it run hotter? No - the thermostat still keeps the temp where it belongs. If I get into traffic where I'm not moving a lot of air it does seem like the needle climbs faster. Can't say for sure though. Going by the plug color it's not lean in normal operation - they look like perfect wheat toast. My guess is it's just off idle where it is lean at all.
-
Puc, First thing you should do is check the fuel level in the bowls. If those are spot on you can look at the needle jets/jet needles. Skydoc17 sells a kit to lower the needles. My 89 was getting mpg in the low 30s. After ruling everything else out I put in Skydoc's kit. Last ride I got 40mpg. When I lowered the needles I needed to richen the idle mixtures some.

It's a ground loop. Had the identical problem with my GPS. The isolator Tx posted will be the simplest to install.

You can open carry in Michigan. BUT the Department of Natural Resources does regulate the carrying of firearms on land where wild game is present as part of poaching prevention. The exception is state law requires the DNR to honor concealed pistol licenses. Since what you had wasn't a concealed pistol the park can probably prohibit it along with anything else that might be detrimental to wildlife or the experience of the general public etc. Just like they keep out alcohol, fireworks and firewood. So, in Michigan you can walk through downtown Detroit with your 44Mag. on your hip and be fine. Do it in the North woods when it's not deer season or you don't have a deer license they could get you on a fish and game violation - UNLESS you have a Concealed Pistol License and keep it under your coat.
