'99 Intermittent Starting - Bad Ground?
megamile replied to BratmanXj's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)

Weird starting problem
megamile replied to megamile's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Update 11/18/25: Pulled and had battery tested; fully charged and tested fine. Cleaned all connections I could find, Dielectric greased them. Tested starter relay; no continuity with power applied. Changed relay. Still the same issue. Pulled and checked SCCR; tested ok. Can't reach starter terminal to apply power directly. Pulled ignition switch; ordered new one as I'm pretty sure contacts are toast. Also ordered new SCCR just in case. djh3_88 has built an ignition bypass relay for me; waiting for shipment. Pulling bar switch housing today to check and clean contacts. Only other thing I can think of would be a worn and partially broken wire somewhere; I think if a wire were chafed and grounded I would be blowing a fuse somewhere; fuses are all good. Haven't heard of any self-resetting circuit breakers on this bike... Maybe intermittent ground issue? Other than battery ground terminal I have no idea where any other ground wires/straps might be located. Very frustrated at this point; hoping new parts wil help. -
2011 Hannigan Venture, ridden every day since purchase 9/2024. On vacation for 3 weeks; trike was parked and covered. On return, trickle charged battery to 12.5 volts, turned key; everything looked normal. Neutral light, clicking fuel pump, dash lights, 12.3 volts on voltmeter. Touched started switch; all power died. Thought I popped main fuse. Nope. All fuses checked good. Key goes to off; turns to start, power returns and 12.3v. Touch start button, power dies. Key to off, then on; power returns. Pulled and checked battery and cleaned terminals and connectors; all seems good. Trike started and ran well daily until I parked it; maybe it's mad at me for going on vacation without it? Wondering where to look first. Switch? Starter solenoid? Wires to starter? Starter short? Clymer is no real help at this point... Mostly it assumes that bike turns over. No clicking or anything; just completely loses all electrical until I recycle key. Weird. (Also posted in Delphi Yamaha forum.) Anyone have ideas?

Long trike day last week; drove to KY to visit Hannigan factory. Drove through storm front that should have been short; lasted through entire state of TN. 3\4 of the way through trike started misfiring, running porly, and lost acceleration. I am assuming that water got through either plug wires or ignition coils; as I pulled in to get fuel issue calmed down until I got back into rain. Next day things dried out and trike went back to running normally after awhile. Might should not have kept running but had nowhere to find wires and/or coils, or dry place to work. Thinking of replacing plugs, wires, and coils anyway (also changing oil on the off chance that unburned fuel managed to get by rings). Wondering if there is any way to increase waterproofing on these critical parts, as I seem to run in the rain quite a bit... On my 2005 RSTD I had a constant problem first year with rear coils and misfires; factory rep after months of troubleshooting scratched head and recommended aftermarket coils and wires, and coil relocation. Wondering if I should also do that here. Any advice? Thank you in advance, as always...

Bought a new helmet with Sena built in; added Sena to wife's helmet. Very happy but can not run wired setup on trike and Sena at the same time; no room for 2 speakers in each helmet. Planning to remove entire sound system on trike-tuner, amp, plugs, CB, wiring, etc. Adding Sena controller to coordinate extras I will use. Adding a Cobra AllRoad 75 CB with remote box, USB mike (if necessary) because it will plug into Sena controller, and also bluetooth to helmet out of the box. Sena comes with FM radio; phone wil cover everything else music, and CB will layer with all of that plus intercom. Leaving speakers on trike because I sometimes like to use them. Looking for an amp that I can plug phone and Sena controller into to pipe phone output through trike speakers if necessary. Needs to be roughly the size of the tuner I'm taking out, would prefer 4 channel output that won't blow stock speakers. Any ideas or advice? Thank you in advance...

Just checked coolant overflow on my 2011 Venture/Hannigan (90,000 miles, bought at 80,000 in 9/24); found huge oil in it. (See pic.) In forumsearches I found primary causes seem to be water pump shaft seals and Twinkie o-rings. Planning to repair both locations; parts for water pump seals and shaft are enroute. Can't find proper part name for Twinkie, or part numbers, or kits. Planning to r&r water pump shaft and seals and o-rings and gaskets in Twinkie, then flush well with Dawn and refill. I have noticed no trace of coolant in oil or sweet smell/white smoke in exhaust. Can anyone enlighten me with info on twinkie seals, gaskets, etc? Thank you in advance!!

Oil in my coolant also; discovered 2 days ago. A lot of sludge. Ordered pump rebuild kit and seals but can find no info on twinkie including proper part name. Need seals and o-rings for it; can anyone help with name, part numbers, etc? 2011 Venture, 91,000 miles.

Thank you. Is CB connection under trunk or near radio in fairing? (Thinking under the trunk.) Thinking this will be a pain either way. Will tuning work if I just hit transmit button without mic connected? (My boy hasn't sent me back the headsets yet...)

Trike won't idle all of a sudden...
megamile replied to megamile's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Found and turned idle adjustment screw out; working much better now. Fuel pump died again on trip south from Taxachussetts; replaced it with the Facet 40178, relocated fuel filter, and now everything purrs. Thank you for suggestions. -
Found an antenna part that fits housing; now I just need to tune it. Suggestions on how to attach the meter are appreciated; not sure how much I have to disassemble to get to the coax connections...

Trike won't idle all of a sudden...
megamile replied to megamile's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Found adjustment screw under tank right rear. Adjusted it quite a bit and trike now idles correctly when warm. Hoping I didn't bend anything in that linkage when I twisted on the Puppies; will check that when I pull the tank this week to add the rest of the farkles. Thank you for your help; I had forgotten about that thumbscrew. I head to work @ 0100; will be 24° out. If I did it correctly, it will start with half choke. If not, I at least know where to start. -
Trike won't idle all of a sudden...
megamile replied to megamile's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Will try. No new fuel since I put the puppies on. Thinking twisting the puppies on messed with the idle set screw. Found location of that screw; gonna check it later today. Hoping it's that easy. -
New to me 2011 Venture trike. Had it for 5 weeks; 3,000 miles after replacing fuel pump on the fourth day of ownership. Been running flawlessly since then until this morning. After I rode it home yesterday, I installed my new Grip Puppies. That is only change to trike. This AM I started it; ran well with choke out (50°) but after warm up would not stay running with choke in. Rides well as before; if I leave choke in it stalls when I downshift or stop. A little throttle will keep it running at stoplights. Grip puppies are not restricting throttle movement at all. Wondering how twisting Grip Puppies on would mess with idle, and how to diagnose and fix issue. Hoping forum can help; I have been away from Ventures for 2 years (after 25 years and 230,000 miles of faithful service) and have forgotten some stuff. (Harley trike proved to be a $20,000 disaster...)

Any chance about that pic of the footpegs? Still trying to figure it out...
-
I'll look them up; I think I saw them on a website but not sure how to use them with the full floorboards. I expect pic of them installed will help; weekend is good.

What brand are longhorns and could you please post a pic?
-
Thx. No local CB shops anywhere near; last one closed just after Radio Shack bit the dust. Only one I know of presently is on the gulf coast. They seem to have gone underground... Just the standard Wilson wall in truckstops any more.
-
I do just need the top section. (Or a complete antenna...) If you would like to part with either, we should talk....
-

It is a Hannigan trike with full floorboards. Peg mounts need to secure to vertical part of guard, then come up and out. Everything I have seen just comes horizontally from the guards.

Thank you! They don't interfere with the lowers?

I didn't think to get a pic from the other side but the center winding is visible; I need the top piece.
