I see deer, turkey, rabbits and squirrels sharing the same patch of ground to eat crumbs and seed on my deck. I hear quite a few things at night although its usually quiet. I hear the breeze in the pines, if its still I can hear the creek babbling. The sky is blue, really blue and I can see the stars at night as if they were low enough to touch. The air smells and taste great. Woodpeckers do attack my house and chipmunks eat vacuum lines and wires but its a small price. I will never ever move back to a city, ill do all that I can to avoid even visiting a city. Some folks are able to bear it but im not one of those. Every moment in a city is like extreme punishment, maybe the most unpleasant thing I have to do is go anywhere big enough to have a walmart. Life is too short to be unhappy with where you live.

I've hit Sturgis on/off since the 80s and we should never confuse "hot" with "scandly clad". You will see many painful reminders that dressing like your hot does not make you hot. Ooh yea, you'll see that! Unless you have a fetish for partially exposed tats you will leave highly disappointed. Have a good time if your going during the rally and if your cool with the crowds more power to ya, but if your goal is to interact with, or even view pretty ladies then I urge you to adjust your expectations.

I mentioned a lack of great places to eat in Deadwood. This place is in Lead a few miles up the road. A cool old RR round house turned into a restaurant. Wifey and I went up there for anniversary one year and sat in a railroad car to eat, very cool. In fact we're going to be in Lead and Deadwood for the next 3 days for our 7th anniversary. Leaving in a couple hours. http://blackhillsftpierrerailroadroundhouse.com/ You MUST also go to Hill City and eat at the Alpine Inn. It's a local treasure. Bring cash, they dont take plastic. Great German food. There is a little known road between Keystone and Hill City. Old Hill City road maybe. It's also a good way to get to Hill City for supper after you have seen Mt Rushmore which rests above Keystone on some stunning roads. Watch it though, lots of blind corners and gawking tourists so be aware. Another thing to be aware of is if you come early in the year watch for dust and dirt in the roads leftover from winter sanding and salting. The Black Hills is a great place to never ride beyond your line of sight. Some of these roads will bite you if your not paying attention. Sturgis isnt exactly known for a bustling food scene as you will see but the Sturgis Coffee Co can serve up a great PSI brewed coffee if you are a latte' junky like I am. It's priced way up there but really one of the only good coffees there. There is one coming right into Deadwood that is pretty good too. It's right on the right as you roll in on the 14a. You will ride the 14a between Sturgis and Deadwood, right? I like what Puc said about coming in through MT. When I lived in Seattle I rode in through Yellowstone and Tetons. Also hit Glacier once. I take different routes, whatever I can find that is not highway. You will miss a lot just trucking in on the ol I-90. There is so much beauty in the back parts of WY, MT and SD, even parts of ID are amazing depending on which way your coming. I rode above the clouds like being on an airplane on the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway in WY. I get so jazzed remembering the wandering around scenic and sparsely populated states.

oil filter 1st gen cartridge
CaseyJ955 replied to CaseyJ955's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I had the Fram and Napa/WIX next to each other and they didnt look much different. I have no doubt that there is a difference in the quality of the media. The Napa is a little heavier and more robust feeling/looking. All the Orings were present and now I have one on the shelf for next time. Damn guys, this thing is running so nice I cant wait to get her out on the road. It's stone cold and rainy today, when I started it to let the oil circulate before final top off it fired up, I barely heard the starter touch the engine before it struck a sweet smooth idle. Just had to throw in some bragging, the COPs and Ignitek are the SHIZZZNIT! It's a whole different bike than when I brought her home. Not only do I love this bike but I love this forum. -
oil filter 1st gen cartridge
CaseyJ955 replied to CaseyJ955's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I'll head to NAPA and grab one of those in the morning, there is a NAPA that I can get to w/o going through the city! I tend to like WIX filters so a couple of those should do it. Thanks! Called NAPA, thats still the current part number too. Didnt have any in stock but he will have a couple of them on the counter for me in the morning. Luckily there are a few in Billings. At $9 ea they arent cheap but it's all good if it protects my baby for a few thousand miles. -
I see a lot of info on 2nd gen oil filters but not 1st gen. I looked in a couple catalogs and found spin-on style filters but what I have is a cartridge style filter and I'm cool with staying with that for this round. I slid a Fram out of there and there today and theres no way I would knowingly use a Fram filter. I read that Supertech (Walmart) has a good quality filter but could not give me a number. I'm hoping one of you good folks knows the part number for a 1st gen cartridge oil filter for Supertech so I can go up and grab a few of them? Also when I drained the oil it was nice and clean but when I slid the cartridge out there were a some super fine brass sparklies in the oil trapped there, need I be concerned? This bike is so insanely smooth and quiet since I added the cops and ignitek so there are no major problems detectable but I fret some anytime I see the oil sparklies. Thanks all!

New brakes?
CaseyJ955 replied to Homiachok's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The seals and gaskets are fairly cheap compared to the amount of work involved in replacement. In my experience aftermarket seals and gaskets (and sooo many other things) are vastly inferior to OEM parts. It's worth the few extra bucks to make sure your getting OEM stuff and you wont have to redo the job anytime soon. For me anything made in China is an automatic no way. Yamaha dealer prices are usually quite lofty but not always, I get plenty from boats.net and been pretty happy. I rebuilt my forks completely using parts from them and it was considerably cheaper than Yamaha dealer and I still got Yamaha OEM quality parts. Here is a youtube walkthrough for the Venture forks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Alwqf8Wqkfs. While your in there that far it's not a bad time to check steering head bearing adjustment. Unless it's silky smooth it might need some attention. Mine were tattered with 70k on the clock so I replaced the whole set. http://www.allballsracing.com/22-1004.html its aftermarket but known good stuff. I have read that some folks take them apart just enough to work some grease into them and assemble/adjust. I'm OCD and they were bone dry on my bike so I replaced all, I want the smoothest ride I can get and these bearings being worn or out of adjustment can directly eff up ride quality and make it feel sloppy and nervous at low speeds. Worth a look anyway while your in there. This is on steering neck bearings. All these old corny Yamaha maintainance videos are a kick, with the old music and porn-stache guy but they are excellent, theres a lot of them out there from this series and they are all quite valuable aside from being...umm... dated. -

http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/1987/XVZ13T/CYLINDER%20HEAD/parts.html A good source for parts, I've ordered a few things, it's OEM stuff. -
I warned of crowds and when you will see them, there is NOTHING in Sturgis worth seeing.Period. (I hate it when people type out the word "period" but it fits here) If you see Sturgis it's because you entered on Vannocker Canyon road and left on the 14a heading into Deadwood. That is a MUST ride! Do NOT eff with the buffalo, give these amazing creatures plenty of space and respect. They do often block roads. Wildlife everywhere so if there is a tree line near the road a deer can appear instantly. Ride accordingly. I do like the old historic casinos more than the larger modern ones, but thats just me. I dont gamble often. Just as Gmarshal is correct about Sturgis, he is also correct about Wall drug. There is nothing in Wall worth seeing, at all. Wall drug was a cool stop back in the 80s but it's very commercialized now and the giant buffalo burgers are very much history. You will see signs for Wall Drug all across the states. You will pass it on your way to the 240 Badlands Loop, another must do. Again, the Murdo Pioneer auto museum is worth the time spent if you like old cars/tractors/implements. If you do go outwards and do plenty of exploring, stay away from Pine Ridge and Rosebud for your own safety.

From my place to Deadwood is an amazing 45 minute ride. We go a few times a year. It sounds like you will enjoy it. Get your tour of the Bullock. We stayed in a couple of the historic hotels before like the Franklin, above the Old #10 Saloon there is an Italian eatery (Deadwood Social Club), I love the place, it's great, not much other good food in Deadwood. The Casino food sucks ass but you can do the all you can eat crab legs fri and sat night at the Silverado, thats pretty good. Keep in mind that lots of these buildings are historic so there is that. I think most offer tours. You will be close to Mt Rushmore, Keystone, Custer/wildlife loop and half a dozen other tourist traps I cant think of at the moment. If you enjoy old west and historic buildings do visit Keystone and Custer, they are all in close proximity and on fantastic roads, I often leave Custer and take the back way into WY just to catch some wide open roads. Ride up around Mt Rushmore. Iron Mtn road is fantastic, Needles, Badlands loop out past Wall, Pioneer Auto Museum while your out there is cool as hell too. Theres really no wrong way to go, Nemo rd, Norris peak road, Vannocker Canyon into Sturgis (if your not insane enough to come out here during the Sturgis rally). Usually during the tourist season I'm hiding out on my property or on the bike well out of the area. All the crowds and traffic really zap the fun out of being here. A lot of the rally goers have no idea what they are doing with a bike and pose more of a danger than anything else. Depending on when you come you will either experience blissful sweeping roads with breathtaking scenery or the grind of being stuck behind Harleys and RVs. I always recommend coming outside rally and tourist season, you will get so much more out of what the Black Hills offers motorcyclists. Bring your cold weather gear, the weather can turn on a dime and get pretty chilly in the higher elevations but most likely you'll be fine with your lids and leathers. If your camping off your bike you can HMU and camp here where it's quiet and near the creek. If your a gambler the machines in Deadwood have been tightened up considerably over the last few years. Once I loose $20 I'm done, I really play very infrequently. There are a lot of newer hotels going up in the area if your not inclined to stay in one of the historic ones, and more going up all the time. Deadwood is growing and loosing some of it's old west charm. I spent my 21st B-day there in 89 right after gambling was legalized, it was fun, the parts I remember anyway. I think most of all I would just encourage you to time your coming to the black hills based on how many other people you want to share it with. I rode to Hill City and Keystone last week on my Vmax, cool and sunny, roads relatively empty and WOW! It ever gets old! This place rocks. I have the next couple months to enjoy it before everyone starts pouring into the area, and from Sept until winter, which can often be a nice long window of time. I'll PM you with my info in case you have any questions or want to hook up for a ride (if your here outside tourist season).

Windshield mounting pic MKII
CaseyJ955 replied to CaseyJ955's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yup, 4 screws total for the glass and two screws for the one piece chrome trim piece. With the right screws she went together great. As indicated the tabs have two holes and only one is threaded for a screw. Shes together and running, I spent the afternoon dialing in the Ignitek. -

Thats the ticket right there. I had to get screws that are long enough to catch more than a couple threads and she buttoned up perfectly. Thank you everyone who responded and submitted pics!! -
funky carb issue!
CaseyJ955 replied to Venturerscott's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yes, they are that finicky. WHen you said you got them clean what did that mean? Did you have them off? I would try a "shotgun" with some compressed air and see how that goes since it's fast and easy and usually effective at clearing things out. -

I mounted the tabs downward, it made sense but before I can button her up I'll have to go get some longer screws. Actually I"m fairly sure that there are a handful of screws just like this somewhere on the bike that are about 1/4" longer than they need to be. I've had enough of this thing torn down now that I believe I have uncovered all the intricacies left for me by the PO. -

The trim is one piece, I saw the exploded and saw that the MKI is a 3 piece setup, thats what made me think they may be different. I think the rubber tabs screw into the twin holes and face downward to anchor the headlight trim, then the windshield base trim goes over that... I think. For some reason it just doesn't feel right. -

I can see I owe some folks some beers now haha. Thanks for the pics. I think there are two rubber tabs that are supposed to go in there for the MKII. It is a slightly different mounting. I didnt know that until now. At the two lower mounts the MKII has two holes each and I found a couple rubber tab/brackets that look like they belong there but the screws arent long enough so I'm not actually sure what goes where. It looks like it should be self-explanatory but I think it got assembled w/o the right screws too. I found the tabs/brackets in the trunk. -
Last I remember he and Mcompton arrived at a price. I hope he got it. I dont need another Venture but for the price that I heard I would have probably gone after it anyway. Maybe when the buyer gets it home it will appear on this forum yet again. I'm going to loose sleep if I never find out what the dealio was with the carbs!

Wow, lathe, mill and CAD proficiency. Just wanted to let you know that we are now best buds and I'll be often calling you for complicated favors which will be rewarded with fist bumps and high fives, bro. Seriously that is very cool, something plenty of folks want is EFI, it's not only true here but on the Vmax side. What not everyone has is the $1500 or so we thought the whole project would cost. It will be interesting to see what you have invested by the time your done.

these dayum little things needed.
CaseyJ955 replied to CaseyJ955's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I found the function to insert link or image, so I clicked insert image and a box popped up asking for source, a box in which I had to type something and I had no idea what that meant or what to do with. I couldnt find an image system like what we use to post images in the conversational threads. Thank you for the leniency on this, I promise not to beat it to death. If nobody has a few of these loose I'll order new or most likely make some. -
Just like you have dog years vs human years, you have HD years/miles vs real bike years/miles. With a rice burner 33k aint no mileage at all.

It shouldnt be hard to get it sorted out. There are a few areas to look at on these creatures, I did some reading and found that my bike was no exception even though it had been cared for. It's fair to assume that a 30 year old bike will need some love and money to be right again. Luckily all the information is right here and it's a fairly straight forward bike to work with. Have a good vacation.

Welcome! If a VR doesnt qualify as a real bike than I dont know what does. IMHO it has plenty of real world versatility. I have a Vmax for hills and Harley killing, and got the Venture for everything else. We'll need the deets, color, mileage, mods and a pic or two If it sat for a long time and will only run with the choke partially on then there might be some junk in there still, maybe some seafoam and riding could clear it out, otherwise a "shotgun" carb cleaning might be a solid idea, which would also give you an opportunity to inspect the diaphragms for holes. Stay away from ethanol tainted fuel and you will have better luck. If you have no idea what the history of the bike is you might just check date codes on the tires and do an oil change, a lot of us like the Shell Rotella 15-40 dino diesel oil, you'll find lots of reading on that too. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?120753-Shotgun-Method-Karb-Cleaning http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?87572-Air-Pressure-Front-and-Rear Anyways, congrats on the acquisition.

The heck you say, look how well it worked for health insurance here in the USA, what could possibly go wrong by the government mucking about in property/auto insurance as well? Your not suggesting that the gov may not have our best interest at heart, are you?
