As a kid I had a Daisy 880 pump. Pretty powerful for what it was. I shot up everything I figured nobody would miss. Fun but never got arrested. Great CL story, probably a libertarian author with a good sense of humor. A fun read!

I have sold a couple bikes on CL, if they want a test ride they have to put the cash in my hand first. When the bike comes back unharmed and they dont choose to buy it they can have the cash back, although that has never happened. Joyriders are sussed out by the cash up front thing. Glad you got cashed out for it. Living this close to Sturgis I often see guys riding bikes to big and heavy for their experience/skill level, see that with some regularity.

IIRC its the 2 O'clock in the pic, I did mine awhile back so it's fuzzy, I'm happy to pull the lid off my Vmax and snap a pic when I'm done with my work shifts next week. Here is a link from his site with mention to it. These are made specifically to solve the exact issue your having with the pods. Email Sean and let him know what your up to, he not only has the parts but vast knowledge on these V4s. http://www.morleysmuscle.com/how-tos/installing-jet-kit/ Some other reading on jet kits and carb tweaks from the Vmax forum, much of it specific to his kits, you may find some useful info there as well. He did tell me that float settings for the Venture are identical to the Vmax which is also touched on in this thread. They come from the factory a touch rich. http://www.vmaxforum.net/showthread.php?t=7754

[quote=cowpuc;999341 You ever see em Casey? Have spent a fair amount of time in the Black Hills but not much riding at night. I do know I camped way back on that two track that leads west toward the waterfall away from that lodge down in Spear Fish Canyon. Rode Tweeks (my 1st Gen) thru there over to Devils Tower one time and camped on the quad trail not to far from the Wyoming State line (small sign way back in there). Lots of Elk all night long, then heard Cougar (mountain lion) screaming = chasing something.. Place is WILD for sure!! They are AWESOME animals! You guys got a wolf population? I always stop at that camp ground where the guys raises Wolves,, on Iron Mountain Rd - right at the intersection where you turn right to go to Needles Highway.. Always meant to ask him if there is a wolf population in The Hills but always forget to... Nice people - good place to camp if ya been long on the prairie or up in the mountains and need a shower... Do love your area!!! Hey,, if I make it out there this year for the Rally - would love to hook up - maybe Pie at the Pie Butt 26.2 in Newell at the Blue Line Diner if BJ puts it on this year??? Would love to say howdy!! Next time your in the hills feel free to hit me up, we're just outside Rapid up 44 West/Rimrock scenic highway and well off the pavement. You can grab a shower and some grub, and camp here where it's private and to beautiful for words. Havnt seen a lion in quite a while, not ours anyway. We know shes here, footprints in the snow are very telling, I occasionally see young ones along side the road but usually it's just deer. Night riding in these hills should avoided or done with extreme respect in regards to the presence of wildlife. Havnt been to Newell in awhile, during the ralley I'm usually either out of town or hiding out here but I never ride and rarely drive during ralley week. If your here HMU and you can camp. Sturgis is about 25 miles. Outside tourist/sturgis season I'm all over these hills and MT, WY, ND as well.

We've got a red fox coming close to the house, pretty brazen for a fox, the dogs go mental every time too. Over the last couple weeks I have heard coyotes and thats quite new. It's dynamic, the populations and wildlife varieties/numbers in this valley do morph slowly over time. Heres a tidbit on chipmunks and those )(*&* squirrels. They suck. They made a nest between the heads of my car, under the intake manifold, they chewed through one of the knock sensor wires causing me to throw a code and kill power and MPG. Nearly had to pull the intake off (the starter is in there too so starter change means intake comes off, 8hrs flat rate) I was able to get it sorted with needle nose, cabinet screwdrivers, a claw retriever and a great deal of patience. The solution that is working is original Irish Spring bar soap through the cheese shredder and sprinkled around under the hood and in the intake valley. It works wonders.

We have mtn lions up here that turns them into poop. A shame, I like the wildlife and just starting to see the rabbit population come back. Havnt seen raccoons and very few fox for quite awhile and they used to be everywhere.

New brakes?
CaseyJ955 replied to Homiachok's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have no real wisdom on specific brand of pads but if the rotors are grooved up or heat discolored than an inspection of the calipers might be in order, make sure they arent hanging up. They may also be grooved up if the pads were allowed to wear down to the metal. There are some good reads here on braided lines and delinking of the brakes, just for fun of course. Great looking bike. Congrats!! -
You can add resistors to your cops, or buy them from any seller willing to solder in some resistors into the harness. I'm unaware of COPs that have integral resistors but that sure doesn't mean they dont exist. I think COPS vary in low side resistance from 1.2 -.1.5 ohm - ish. So if factory is 3.0 ohms it's just a little math to find the right resistor to work with the OEM TCI. Some of the earlier TCIs, and maybe others, wont tolerate lower resistance in the coil primary circuit, something about the added current burning them up IIRC, maybe even over time. I'll be sitting down to make my COP harness in the next couple days, I dont expect it will take more than an hour or so. I have some spare 1.5ohm resistors I wont be needing.

I love the customs! When you remove the restrictive factory airbox and go with free flowing filter/s the carbs dont like it. Another option to correct that is to get some restrictors for the carbs and that should make it right again. I went with a filter lid on my Vmax, ditching the factory lid and K&N and I had to use them on mine. I got them from Sean Morley (Morleys Muscle) over on the VMax forum or facebook. They are normally part of his jet kit for the Vmax that are needed once one of his free flowing airbox lids are installed. I have that setup and it rocks! You can buy the restriction separately. I said restrictors, I should have said air correctors, little brass plugs with a tiny orifice that presses into the top air inlet port on top of each carb.

It sounds like the Ignitek and the unit tested in this thread may be for slightly different demographics. I'll need the Ignitek for the Venture because of the VMax top end going on next year, I expect to have to tweak and tune or be able to load custom maps, but if I were going to R&R one on a stock-ish bike this one might be nice. Sounds like they got the curve/map right and the OP is enjoying new found power. Sure cant be all bad. I wouldn't mind seeing it for under $300 though. Last I checked on the new Ignitek for the Venture they were having to be ordered from the other side of the pond and the price was just shy of $300. If the price just came down on the Ignitek thats a plus.

I do like it, it looks like a really competent bike that can do quite a bit. I dont see it replacing the Venture but it's cool. Looks more like a sportbike that has some real world survivability. It looks like a variant of the Tenere. Not for me but still .

Calling electrical gurus
CaseyJ955 replied to Bassett's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
+1, the safety features are pretty nice, and they should all be able to be tucked away out of sight. The kickstand kill switch saves me at least a time or two each season. -
It would be very cool to have alternatives. I got an Ignitek from another member for a really decent price so I'm no longer looking for one but before I found that one (Thanks Heather!) the prospect of getting anything other than stock was a real PITA. My questions are out of curiosity because I have still have a stock TCI in my Vmax. Is it flashable, can you alter or install different mapping? Is it safe with resistorless COPS? Looks awesome, thanks for the great ride review!

Venture owners, next time you change air filters-
CaseyJ955 replied to M61A1MECH's topic in Watering Hole
Were supposed to HAVE air filters? I thought those were for sissies! Maybe the 11 minute job replacement is on the V4 is a perk then. I'm still a Honda fan, it's hard to hate a line of cars that fairly regularly rack up over half a million miles before death, thats like two Chryslers, a Jeep and a Buick with change to spare. -
It's been 70+ for the first part of this week. Yesterday we got hit with 7-8" up here. I caught the bullet you dodged . But for this time of the year I cant complain about the sun and warmth we got before it.

Yamaha designed it around a fragile 2nd gear instead (at least for the firs couple years) I like the Goldwings, probably would have picked up a GL1500 but the Venture just felt roomier and V4-ier. Honda makes a damn fine vehicle, car or bike, but not always the easiest to wrench on for sure. I read the procedure for timing belt replacement on the Wing... man. -
Carb Diaphragm replacement.
CaseyJ955 replied to CaseyJ955's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
That really sucks! I'm sorry, those arent exactly available at Safeway. I just installed all 4 new diaphragms with no casualty but I do have a slide that is in question. It was binding in the bore and has some strange wear. I may run over it with some 600 and see if that takes care of it. -

Hmmmmm I'll letcha know by the end of this riding season how good the UK diaphragms are. I'll install them tonight onto the slides and probably into the carbs. They feel like they are pretty nicely made. I rejuvenated the jet block plugs, both shocked and delighted that the 1:3 ratio of wintergreen oil:91% rubbing alcohol seems to have worked wonders, where they were sliding out with very little/no resistance now they are a tight fit after a 36 hour bath. PO tried to use sealant and even drove a screw into one of them, presumably to expand it to stay put. I'm glad the screw didn't go through. Wow! I hope it's a lasting fix. -

Those must be aftermarket, brand was NCS or something. If they were OEM, or even made anywhere other than China it would be proudly boasted in the description. I could not find country of manufacture and that usually means only one thing. I picked these up after others here vouched for their quality, they are nice and the seller seemed straight up, they arrived surprisingly fast from the UK where he makes them. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Set-of-4-Pcs-Carburetor-Diaphragm-Yamaha-XVZ13-XVZ1300-Venture-Royal-1986-1993-/281761118300?hash=item419a45785c:g:3c4AAOSwrklVXmxv&vxp=mtr&autorefresh=true ] I'm not sure where SCI are made either but I suspect the same. I have never handled one so I'm not sure what their quality is. Experience has given me a very healthy apprehension of Chinese aftermarket. -

I got the same ones VanRiver got further up in this thread, the ebay ones from the UK. Is there supposed to be some sort of modification to install? I dont recall the seller mentioning anything about that. -

CaseyJ955 replied to CaseyJ955's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Slides and diaphragms, quite a bit easier to work with as a whole assembly. When I priced the assembly I think it was considerably more expensive than that. Sounds like you found a sweet deal. -

So I didnt really give the diaphragm fix a chance. I decided instead to just replace them with the UK made set, for $100 shipped it seems better than chancing failure in BFE. So now that I have these replacement diaphragms I'm coming up short on how to install them on the slides. The Youtube methods I have looked up include griding off the metal lip on the distal diameter of the slide, then gluing the washers back on. Not fond of that one. The other one involves the slide into a length of PVC and tapping with a screwdriver handle. I'm not wanting to break the slides and have seen plenty to suggest that this might be the actual result. So how to get this done? If I do have to grind and glue, what is the best glue/sealant to use that is impervious to fuel/petrol. I searched the site and internet and didnt come up with much else. Thanks!! -
It's amazing how much of an upgrade to life a divorce can be. I just picked up the Shell Rotella T4 15-40. Doesnt say diesel oil on the front but if you read the back it's there. JACO MA/2 and it's ~$13/us gal. I always pick up enough for the Vmax, Venture and all the small engines. It is really tough to beat for the price and it works great.
