  1. Along bongobobny's line of thought, I use a product called Eezox for rust protection of anything metallic. It's a gun product but works well on any metal prone to corrosion. Clean them up with a rust remover(naval jelly, aircraft stripper, etc) and treat them with Eezox. It's not a hard coating so it won't chip away, but it will need to be re applied periodically. Or just suck it up and by the expensive stainless steel or chromoly lug nuts. $0.02
  2. PLEASE get OEM gaskets. The chicom stuff on fleaBay are complete junk. Ask me how I know!
  3. I picked up a NIB GoPro knock off for about $60.00 in trade. It seems to work well. I had issues with the video and the audio not synchronizing properly but that turned out to be a combination of hi rez capture and low end play back hardware. I went down to a lower video resolution and ran it on a newer machine and everything is fine. I thought I'd use it a lot more that I do. I just don't think about it and forget that I have it most times! I may dash mount it in the car or truck just to get some video proof of the lack of driving skills in my little chunk of paradise. ETA: I want to add that I was very surprised at the audio recording from this cheap little camera. I'd thought the audio of recordings when riding would be nothing but wind and ambient noise but it picks up my voice quite clearly and keeps the wind rush at a minimum nicely with no audio connections, just the condenser mic on-board.
  4. I've got an '82 Yamaha XJ750 Maxim that I bought for $800.00 changed the tires and battery and have put close to 10K miles on with only one breakdown. The main fuse popped out of the fuse block. It took me a minute or two to find it and 10 seconds to fix it. She does need brake pads and shoes now though. I'd ride her 1000 miles tomorrow if it wasn't cold and icy!
  5. And my test link works. Just typed the URL, did not use the link button.
  6. There's a button in the VigLink screen to continue to summit racing and when click it pops up a suspicious activity warning and says you've been blocked form that site. Interesting. djh3 and camos, both(all) of the links posted here go to the VigLink screen. Are you using the editor buttons to post the links? www.customcarryconcepts.com The above link is a test and should go to my business website.
  7. flyday58, I gotta say, I wish every PO was as conscientious as you are! Most would have forgotten about that bike and the new owner 2 minutes after the transaction was over. GOOD ON YOU SIR!!!! I wish you good luck and God speed in finding the problem and once again, thank you for being such a good guy. Regards, Rich
  8. After comparing the new OEM gaskets to the 1 year old chicom gaskets, there is no doubt whatsoever that the chicom gaskets are the reason for my leakage! The OEM gaskets are nearly twice as thick as the cheapo gaskets and ribbed differently. I am confident that the new gaskets will solve my weeping head cover problem.
  9. Santa brought me my Carb parts and head cover gaskets! Did anybody else get Venture Parts for Christmas this year?
  10. Thank God FF's guns are short range! It's 43 deg and raining in my AO, just 95 mi. SE of Freebird's DZ.
  11. OK, I'd say "easier" but I getchya'. The chicom gaskets went down fine, no pinching or rolling. They're perfectly flat and in place. They just leak from everywhere. Literally every inch seeps oil and it's the worst around the cam cut out Ds. They are are just too thin. Either that or the chicom bolt rubbers are not to spec. Or a combination of both. Either way, I'll get her sealed up this winter. I'm sick of adding oil every other day and putting down dry sweep on the driveway!
  12. I thought they were just easier to install due to an extra sprue that helps keep them in place. I did talk to my local Yamaha shop(great bunch of guys who actually love the old bikes) and they told me they have an after market bolt cushion that works well and is 1/3 the price of OEM. If she leaks again with the OEM gaskets and chicom cushions, I'll try their after market suggestion.
  13. I'm considering stacking a 1mm thick silicone washer under the bolt cushion just for insurance.
  14. I put new bolt cushions on last spring. They shouldn't need replaced again. I've reused the Yamaha head cover bolt cushions for many years on other models.
  15. I've inspected thoroughly. neither gasket is rolled/pinched and both leak from the Ds and nearly every where else. Either the gaskets are too thin or my new cushions are. I'm hoping it's the gaskets.
  16. So, I got the new head cover gaskets and carb parts in the mail today But I'm not allowed to open them till Christmas:(. Listen, that's the deal I made and I'll hold up my end of bargain! That didn't stop me from pulling the necessary plastics, yanking the carbs and getting the head cover bolts loosened up this evening. My question is this: Does anyone find it necessary to use a gasket sealer on the head cover gaskets? I have always used HiTack to "glue" the gasket to to the cover for ease of installation but I've never used anything between the gasket and the head on any of my bikes. The reason I'm replacing the gaskets is because the new(chicom) gaskets I installed last winter after doing the valve adjustments have leaked horrendously from day one. I went through nearly 2 gallons of oil this summer. The new gaskets from Partzilla are OEM, Yamaha gaskets. Can I expect them to seal up without any help? The 30+ year old gaskets I tore off last winter did not leak at all.
  17. Can you run youtube and other internet based services on the Fire Stick? The reason I ask is that my newest smart tv(Samsung, about 6 years old) wont run Youtube any more and the app can't be updated for some reason. I just watch through my PS3 but it is kind of disappointing that the apps on the smart tv expire.
  18. I clean out the garage once a year, whether it needs it or not. Today was day 1. We moved the completely disassembled 1981 Yamaha XJ750RH Seca out to the shed, got rid of a truck load of cardboard and filled a very large garbage can with all manner of detritus. There remains a whole lot of reorganization and further cleaning but we made room for the Beast so I can start the removal of the carbs for rebuild and the replacement of some cheapazz chicom head cover gaskets that cost me 2 gallons of oil last season. This is the most space I've had in this garage since this time last year! I have all the necessary carb parts and head cover gaskets on order from Partzilla and a Needle Shim Kit coming from skydoc_17 to, hopefully cure my fuel economy issue.
  19. Since that's not your first XJ you probably already know about xjbikes.com and xjforever for parts. If you don't, check it out. A member(forum owner?) there, chacal, has a the largest warehouse of new old stock xj parts that exists. His prices are reasonable and he has everything that is available, including coil mod instal kits and spin on oil filter adapters for all models. At least two of us here are or were members there, I still go there occasionally.
  20. I found a link to a classifieds for the shim kit from skydoc but it's a dead link. Is that kit still available? If so how how I get one?
  21. BTW, The reason I am going to "Rebuild" the carbs is simply my fuel economy sucks right now. She's running great but I'm only getting 28-29 mpg with a good tail wind. I quick cleaned the carbs(can of carb cleaner and partial disassembly) and replaced the pilot mixture screws when I first got the Beast and that seemed to be all that was needed until I started tracking my mileage.
  22. cimmer, Thanks! Parts Shark appears to be just a bit cheaper than Partzilla though I didn't dig in far enough to see what shipping costs are there. Yamahasportsplaza.com does have the main needle assy. and main nozzle available. They're pricey, though cheaper than the local dealership. ETA: The needle set I found is for the '89 V-Max 1200 not the MK1 Venture, sorry! I may order one just to compare them.
  23. I went ahead and ordered the parts that I absolutely know need to be replaced, including the head cover gaskets from HELL(well, from china actually) from Partzilla. Hopefully the main nozzles, needles and coast diaphragms don't need replaced. I have already inspected the main slide diaphragms and they are fine so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. For the carbs, I ordered the rubber blocks for the jet blocks, the jet block gaskets and the choke block/enricher block gaskets. I have half a dozen different o-ring kits so the o-rings should be covered.
  24. OK, I gotta admit, I don't have a clue what a vacuum actuator cable is.
