  1. Took her out for a little longer run today. Temp was mid to high 50's(F). It didn't feel like she had as much get up and go as I remember from last season but I was 2 up today and most of my saddle time last season was solo, so it may be a bad memory kind of thing. The fuel level sender is flaking out. I filled her up and it started out reading full but showed empty about 30 seconds later and would go back and forth between full or some other random level once in a while but mostly stayed on empty. This has never happened before. The turn indicators flaked out once as well for about 10 minutes. Everything else seemed to be fine.
  2. What Flyinfool said! Every time I strip the plastics off The Beast I end up with a couple left over screws and more broken parts!
  3. I'd have stopped, turn lane or no turn lane. Unless it's a divide road way, you stop in both directions. It shouldn't matter for the insurance claim. Regardless of the school bus, the other driver is at fault. I don't know of any place that would cite you for being rear ended unless you had cut the other driver off or turned in front and even then only if they didn't hit you square on, indicating they had no time to react.
  4. Dan, You paid for that. You paid for any Veteran's benefit many times over the first time you raised your hand swore that oath. God Bless
  5. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea several years ago (maybe 10?). I got a cpap machine and went through half a dozen different masks and straps and other various medieval torture devices till I found a combination that worked relatively well and did not keep me awake more than the apnea did. Unfortunately, my insurance no longer covers the supplies so I have been sleeping without the cpap. I have found that my weight has a huge impact on the apnea. When I drop down to 180lb or less, I don't snore and the apnea disappears. I'm about 220 right now and I snore a bit but I'm still sleeping OK. I'm actively working on dropping another 20 lbs(at least) but It's very expensive to live on a very low carb diet, which is what it takes for me to keep the weight off. Forget about my love of craft beer and cheese doodles!
  6. I took her out for a short(and very cold) test ride last night and everything seems to be GTG. It did take quite a while to warm up and accelerate without a lag from idle but it did eventually. I may have to tweak the pilot mix but I'll wait for a bit warmer weather to make that decision.
  7. OK, I couldn't wait a whole day. I pulled the TCI and opened it up. It looks much nicer on the inside than it does on the outside. I did go ahead and bake it for a couple hours at 200deg F. and greased the connectors up with dielectric grease when I put it back on The Beast. This time I got very good readings on all cylinders in the Colortune. She's dialed in and re synchronized. All ready for the plastics to go back on. The snow stopped but it is about 25deg. F right now so maybe a road test Monday. Tomorrow is my Grandson's birthday party so he'll have my undivided attention.
  8. I use the ColorTune to set the pilot mixture. It works well on some bikes and not so much on others. It worked OK last season on the Venture. The XVZ12 does not give me the level of feedback I get on the XJ engines but it does help. I am getting decent readings on the other 3 cylinders. I'll let her sit for a day or two and try again. It may have been a flooded situation. Thanks for all the suggestions and moral support!
  9. It's been on top of the air box since I brought her back to life the first time. I'll open it up and take a look though. I'd have thought dielectric grease would be a bad idea in this case. It really doesn't do anything to help connectivity.
  10. A little Voodoo seems to have gone my way. I picked up new spark plugs just because they're cheap and sanded the blades on the TCI then put her back together. She's bangin' on all four now and I get a good flame in the Colortune on #3 , though the pilot adjust screw doesn't seem to have much effect. It had to be bad connections at the TCI because I'd swapped plugs a couple times with no effect and never did get flame in the Colortune until I cleaned the blades again. Oh well, chalk this one up to the vintage Nipon Guru Gods of mechanics. Of course the weather went to hell yesterday and doesn't look like I'll get a break any time soon for a road test!
  11. I cleaned the external connections when I got her few years back. I never opened the TCI box. Compression test results: #1 190psi #2 185psi #3 190psi #3 190psi #3 190psi #3 190psi #4 180psi All tested WOT, all spark plugs removed, TCI unplugged and a booster pack attached to battery. #3 coil secondary ohms out to 23.2K through resistor cap to ground. Well within spec. I have to remove some more plastic to get to the primary and I don't feel like doing it right now.
  12. Yeah, I'd planned to run comp tests today and pop the top hat on 3 to double check the diaphragm. It's always possible that it didn't lay down right and isn't sealing up but it sure doesn't act like that. #3 dances to the same beat as the rest on the throttle and the slide returns at the same rate when moved manually.
  13. Yeah, I'm scratching my head a bit too. Morgan Carb Tune Pro, the lines were not pinched or kinked. Like I said, I tuned at 1K, tweaked at 3K and rechecked at 1K. I'll do some vac leak tests tomorrow, I'm tied up all day today. I inspected all the diaphragms and they looked good the #3 slide acts normal and is in sync with the others.
  14. Sprayed carb cleaner in #3 before I pulled them the second time, no effect. Synched after final install at1Krpm then 3Krpm then reset idle to 1Krpm Yes, all 4 carbs synched in nicely though #3 would have intermittent vac drops, not regular and not really often but more than once or twice. She starts right up and idles pretty smooth at 1K but you can hear #3 randomly firing and going cold. It sounds like #3 is solid at higher rpms, which is why I was looking at a fuel issue. Then again, 3 may be cutting in and out at any throttle position and it just sounds smooth at higher rpms. I'm going to close her all up and get some road time in ASAP and see if I pick up on anything.
  15. The good news is the head cover gaskets are sealed up tight! No leaks.
  16. I pulled the carb bank and double checked #3 . All passages are clear and everything looks good. I put new o-rings on all 4 drain plugs and reinstalled everything. Still no fire at idle on cyl. #3 . I pulled the plug and low an behold, it's fuel fouled. Cleaned her up and...still no luck. I colortuned the other 3 carbs and synched 'em all up at about 3k rpm. Dropped the idle back down to 1Krpm and I can hear 3# firing intermittently. I'm leaning toward a bad TCI but I'll ohm out all the coils caps and wires later just to be sure. Anybody know off hand what the Ignitech modules are going for now? The orange box from RegulatorRectifier.com is $329.00
  17. All the drain screws are leaking now as well. They looked good and had never leaked before so I just reinstalled them. I'll have to see if I have the right O-rings for them. At this point, I'm just going to pull them and give them another over all inspection.
  18. I'll definitely try some fuel directly injected first but all the signs point to a blocked pilot circuit, as I'm getting fire on "choke" and at open throttle. Not to mention my spark is jumping like a champion bullfrog. The pilot adjust has zero effect from closed to completely open.
  19. I got the carbs all cleaned up and put back together. Remounted the carb bank, air box and TCI. Started her up and I'm getting no love from the #3 cylinder. Good spark and the colortune shows fire with the enricher circuit on and at 1/3 throttle or so, just no fire on idle. I must have a blocked passage in the #3 carb pilot circuit. I guess I'm pulling the carbs again tomorrow!
  20. Got two carbs cleaned up, re shimmed and back together with the new SS screws. I have to track down a lost screw for the enricher block on one of them. Not sure where it could have gone as everything was disassembled in a Rubbermaid container and hasn't been touched since tearing them down. The third is in the carb dunk and the fourth is waiting in line. I'd hoped to get them all back together, check the float levels and reassemble the rack tonight but without that pesky screw, it'll have to wait till Tuesday!
  21. Made a little headway today. Not as much as I'd liked to have gotten done but a start. I spent most of the day on a wild goose chase looking for some 2" flexible aluminum duct to make an exhaust vent for the shop. Nada, nunca! So I'll have to order it from the interwebz. I did pick up new fuel line and got that and the head covers with the new OEM Gen 2 gaskets installed. Now to get started on dinner. Chicken Tandoori tonight, with fresh ginger and cilantro served with lemon/chicken rice and yogurt sauce. YUMMMMMM!
  22. Congratulations on your first Grand Baby youngster! Good on ya' for giving up the cancer sticks as well!
  23. Plastics everywhere!
  24. Will do. Glad you mentioned it as I had never even thought about it.
  25. Had to replace the cheepaz chicom head cover gaskets that leaked 2 gal. of oil last season and figured I'd do a proper rebuild on the carbs and swap the needle shims as well.
