  1. Did you check and set the float height? Carbs aren't all about the jets. You have to remember that often 1mm low or high will affect performance on motorcycle carbs and it doesn't take much to bend them in either direction while handling. Some are more forgiving than others but it is still a crucial step.
  2. If you think this is bad you should try some of the heavily moderated (by "Subject Matter Experts") gun forums out there. There is no room for differing opinions so you either become a sycophant or get kicked off never to return. I have not been a fan of trikes ever since I ran over my own leg on a Honda three wheeler but I won't shame somebody for owning one. Harley riders....
  3. You still have a carb issue. If it'll only run with the choke on you have either a fuel level issue or plugged jets. You may also want to check your pilot jet adjustment. Not sure what the spec is on these but probably around two turns out (I'm sure others can verify). You are chasing boogiemen. Go back to the KISS method and look at what started your frustration, an over fueling problem. I left my petcock open all the time and never had an issue with fuel running through the carbs because my floats were doing their job. I've had several instances where I did a set of carbs and had to pull them again because well, carbs. Pilots don't take much to plug or for the adjustment to be off. If your carbs are good, you should be able to run the bike with a coffee can full of fuel held up above the tank connected straight to the fuel inlet tube. Google carb tuning if you're unsure how a carb works and how different throttle positions use different circuits. Or it could be the coils. Or the final drive. Or the rear shock. Or the stereo wiring. Or the clutch. Or the tires.
  4. A buddy of mine had this and the surgery to repair and he's doing fine now. Works with tools all day. What I can say from being in week three post tendon release surgery in my elbow is that surgery sucks!!! I keep looking at bikes to buy even though I know I couldn't move one if I tried, let alone ride. And like you, I get to have the other one done when the left one heals. Haven't had a good nights sleep yet and the rehab just started today. Take care of yourself and the hand, and no matter what, LET IT HEAL before going back to doing all the stupid crap we men do.
  5. Guaranteed the crankcase is full of fuel. Check your fuel level and oil level through the window. Somehow when you did the carbs either you didn't adjust the float height correctly or have some debris on the needles and or seats. Drain the oil, clear out the cylinders by pulling the plugs and running the starter as suggested above, and check your floats. Not a big deal but a pain in the ass. Be careful not to turn it over anymore with the plugs in as you could hydrolock the engine and cause more damage.
  6. Kid with the Uzi was a 9 year old girl and she killed the instructor. She has to live with dad's bad judgement. That video made me sick and reminded me of some of the asinine situations I've put myself and others in in the past. Made me grateful that we "got away with it" but man things could've gone south in a hurry. Thing about regret is that it usually goes hand in hand with situations that affect other people.
  7. Why don't you just try swapping hard drives from the newer Asus to the older Toshiba? You may have to download some drivers for hardware specific to the Toshiba but otherwise it should run fine. You should also be able to swap over the RAM if the Toshiba is not maxed out already.
  8. Well I definitely appreciate the offer. My grown-up step daughter lives in Tampa so we're down there on occasion. Traffic sucks but it's nice to visit. I'm pretty sure the right bike will show up at the right time and all will be well in the universe. Till then I'll work on getting my stuff in order for a move if I can manage to do it one-handed.
  9. We actually had flurries this morning down here in Jacksonville. Lit a fire and hunkered down!!!
  10. I plan on sticking around and I know it won't be long before a ridiculous deal shows up on Craigslist for something interesting for me to store in the garage until I work on it and ride again. Wife is more upset than I am right now. As for automatics, I've never ridden one but always been intrigued by the old Honda CB750 Hondamatic autos. The new house that we're looking at has a two car attached garage and a separate 30X20 shop in the back so it's a given that I'll fill it with bikes and such. Might finally splurge on a proper lift.
  11. Venture is sold. Just wanted to say thanks for all the input and support from this truly exceptional community. Who knows, in 5 or 6 months when I'm able to maybe I'll get another one. But maybe a 1st Gen this time just to see what all the hype is about. Or an FJR. I REALLY like the FJR....
  12. This came as a surprise and blew my mind. It will have a spot in my future outdoor kitchen.
  13. Not down here, at least locally. Our Sheriffs and Deputies support good citizens, not the scumbags.
  14. I built a new custom AR from a stripped lower I had in the safe. Used Black Friday as an excuse to buy all the parts "cheap". Merry Christmas to me
  15. 20 years old riding home 3 hours after a long weekend at my girlfriends cottage. Yes it was a long weekend and yes I was tired. So after about an hour of riding at about 70mph on a long and boring highway I fell asleep. On the bike. At 70mph. I woke up somehow just in time to push off the drivers window of the car I was careening into. Drifted back into my lane and straight over to the shoulder. Needless to say I got off at the first exit, shaking like a leaf, and downed a couple of coffees. I always wondered how the driver of that car felt. Probably the most dangerous situation I've ever put myself into on a bike.
  16. I thought that meant that you were supposed to receive money. Damn I've been doing it wrong from day one. This is like learning that a certain fat jolly old man from up north isn't real. Next time my palm itches I will be wrought with fear and frustration and be compelled to check my bank accounts to make sure I've got enough to cover. AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!
  17. Worn ball joints will cause the camber to become out of spec. If they're bad enough they will cause the wheel to oscillate at speed which causes tires to cup (as will the wheels being out of balance). When camber and toe are out of adjustment you usually get feathering and or inside/outside tread wear on the tire. I was a dealership alignment guy for 2 years and a Dodge mechanic for 4. NOTHING surprises me on a Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth. Mind you I also replaced a TON of tires at the Lexus store under warranty for a vibration at 160mph.
  18. Holy crap you guys are old. Dad gave me his '83 Suzuki GS300 when I was 15. Rode it dirty for a year then got my bike license the day I turned 16. Examiner asked how I knew how to handle a street bike so well at my age....... Been riding ever since and have owned about 50 different bikes. Starting to get the itch again for dirt bikes and a lightweight street bike to throw around. RZ350 anyone?
  19. Ha ha born and raised in Canada. Even worked at the Beer Store for a couple of years when I was young. I got smart 12 years ago and moved down here so I could have guns, cheap luxuries, ride without a helmet and keep most of my paycheck. That and the weather down here ain't too bad...
  20. Taxes taxes taxes. Because "free" healthcare. And social safety net. Gotta love Canada eh?
  21. Damn you're a nice guy. I would've called the cops and has his ass hauled off to jail for DUI.
  22. Let the shop know about the cluster you found. If they don't know about it they can't do anything about it. chances are that they guy who did the install is already gone, and if not maybe they simply don't give a rats ass. If that's the case then I always post a review on Google about shoddy workmanship.
  23. Years ago one of the guys I worked with shut off my petcock then stood by "diagnosing" why the damn bike wouldn't start. I was clueless because you never go the KISS method when you're buddy is leading you down the path. Just as I was about to remove the tank to test the coils he came clean.
  24. I found a set of low mileage R1 front calipers for about $65 shipped so I think I'll go ahead and buy them. Worst case is that I have a spare set of calipers. If the brakes still aren't as good as I'd like them to be I'll find a master that works. I have blue LEDs on my bike so the blue dots don't bother me too much.
