  1. Had to make a 200 mile trip yesterday, elderly uncle can't won't get on the bike. Secretly I was happy to take the car with AC. A large very windy storm with heavy rain didn't change my mind about that decision.... She's pretty hot even up nort. Was making a set of G2 lift adaptors in the shed about noon. Lets just say I wasn't worried about sparks starting my clothing on fire.
  2. does your G2 tank run out of fuel on the main before the low fuel light goes on?
  3. Appleton only 90 miles! can I invite my connie riding buddy? He lives in hortonville. ( we can make him pay for food!)
  4. It's back together naked now. It appears the PO had the wheel on backward but now I need to check and see if the tire is on backward. I had the rotors off, is it just my bike or is one rotor on "backwards" on all of them?
  5. Got the front wheel polished and all back together. Did a test ride, 80 miles isn't enough, but dark and deer is no country for old men. Kinda pretty along the Wisconsin River.

    Score!

"I have a gravel driveway." You need a good sized piece of heavy plywood or some such under the lift to stabilize it. If your gravel is loose I wouldn't use the lift on it at all. got the 99 on a larin lift for the steering bearing snug and front wheel work right now. no adapters, One bar is under the centerstand tabs the other on the floor board mounts, it's making me a bit nervous but I've dealt with worse.. The adapters are great idea, service.
  7. Just a thread for anyone to pop in and show and tell what you've been working on. The RSV clear coat was badly sunburned, peeling with areas of corroded aluminum. I started the day by doing a steering bearing snug up which is it's own story, I now have decent sized hole in my chin, But after that I pulled the front wheel worked out a small dent in the fender and stripped and brush\polished the fork lowers and wheel. 4" blue dico wheel in a $5 garage sale drill. then blue magic on a buffing wheel in the same drill. forks are done but ran out of light while working the wheel. Also spent a quality hour straightening radiator fins where some PO had "cleaned" it with a power washer .......
  8. My weight was mounted on the left. but the tire had been changed before my recent purchase of the bike (2005 date code, yeah I know, but no cracks, may just run it off.) I see no difference side to side on the wheel? IE is there a left or right side to the wheel? I did mark it, but who knows if the last guy did..... I'm pretty sure the chrome is staying off on mine. Just stripped the flaking clear coat from rim and fork legs.
  9. Just did this on my RSV when I found mr. mouse had been busy. I use a zip tie to secure the foam and remove it to clean and reoil. The foam is a tight enough fit I'm not worried about air dirt getting around the edges. The paper was separating from the end with the hole so I finished the job and glued the screen to the cap with flexible bumper epoxy (handy stuff) I have been doing similar on my XS650's for years. One sheet cut in half the long way then trimmed down a little more does both filters on the RSV only one seam per filter. Not shown but I bent up some soda can aluminum to keep the seam airtight. I also replaced the mushy foam seal with some black UNI foam. Note Uni sells several different foams from coarse to fine hole size. 42 MPG on the first tank run this way.
  10. New here, 99RSV, any one try longer risers on an RSV? Simpler install.
  11. Put the correct pivot bolt back in and rode out this morning to confirm, about 5 miles out; slip city, damn it all anyway! Again it was all I could do to get back up the road to my house. any touch on the lever had the engine spinning free of the gear box. Checked the MC/lever connecting rod length with the lever on AND off thinking the lever was somehow not allowing the piston to fully release. Nope that only changed by .002" Note to self; think a bit before poking a bear with a sharp stick. I have a piece of stainless safety wire that I have carefully ground down to a very small diameter on the end to clean tiny holes. Removed the reservoir cover and probed the compensating port. Do you have any idea how far a pressurized clutch system will spray fluid when a tiny hole is unplugged? Lets just say bike quickly got a soapy bath. Problem solved, 50 miles, no clutch slip under any amount of throttle in any gear. Bonus; 200 miles used 4.7 gallons of gas or 42mpg. I'm not done with carb settings yet, 45MPG seems attainable. My K1200LT would do 50MPG in similar riding.
  12. venturesome. I really like that post! My ride today was two parts, the first about 30 miles, I also felt ZERO play, when I stopped to home, I even took out the handle pivot bolt and used a plain bolt to make sure it wasn't a lack of travel issue, some play then but even that pretty much disappeared during the second part of the ride. Note to self; put the correct pivot bolt back in the morning.... The mech that did the carb work pictured changed oil and filter, used Spectro oil, weight not noted, filter looks fresh. oil is light colored in window. (slightly overfilled). That was done this spring. Fluid in clutch reservoir looks fresh but there was a slight stain of darker fluid in the bottom, additional flush and bleed will be done. Bongo bob; I did read all clutch threads I could find including the one you mentioned. Gotta wonder if the PCW spring is a EBC?
  13. breathless update: I opened clutch reservoir and poked into second port with a sharp pick. The second hole is VERY small and easily clogged. Took it back out and almost no slip even under hard throttle up a steep hill. Need to go run up another hundred miles see if it goes back to slipping. But hey I am willing to do that in the name of science! OK a guy can hope, right? Bike had been in a cycle shop for "make the damn thing run so I can sell it" work, clutch was "bled", front master cylinder was "lubed". Invoice included two cans of DOT 3, I can only imagine. This was his work also...
  14. A quality car polish does a lot of good. I have "recovered" some pretty bad shields with meguiar's cleaning wax, if it's over all bad I use the car buffer and wool pad, an occasional spritz of water from an old windex bottle so it doesn't get too dry while polishing. buff then apply high quality car wax after for best results.
  15. I just got a 99RSV Bought it "kind of" running Tuesday, shows 10,800 miles. Back story includes it sitting "under" a carport in Arizona for the last 5 years. After finding several issues in the carbs, she's back together and I fired it up this morning. Put on 160 miles today and all is good BUT the clutch is slipping, bad, wasn't sure it would make it up the last hill to my house, had to go down to 3rd with very careful throttle use to do it. So: Has anyone tried the caltric clutch plate and gasket kit? http://www.ebay.com/itm/291355972200 I will also use the EBC heavy diphragm spring and probably get rid of the half plate and wire. Which means reusing one clutch friction plate. Will scuff sand the steels before reassembly. Thanks for the great forum! I have found more than my money's worth of useful info so far with plenty more to come. I plan to put about 4,000 miles on the bike this summer. Sunrise this morning, yeah I wanted to ride it bad. It will never be showroom again but she's cleaning up pretty good.
  16. http://www.ebay.com/itm/181097275727 includes two units gives you all 4 as running lights. You will have to splice. the amber in back still applies. Red Led bulbs to fix that?
  17. Great bikes but not for the long of leg. Riders tend to change seats like underwear but seldom find the answer. the pillion position is marginal. Bought a perfect low mile ST11 rode it 3000 miles home. Tried five different seats but never got comfortable enough for long runs, sold it the next year. That's why I am here for the forward foot location on a G2 I'm 6'3" with a bony butt and structural problems in my back.
  18. I've been looking, really I have! 1999 RSV Per parts list main jets install #1 and #2 122.5 #3 117.5 #4 120 all other brass is the same in all 4 carbs. I found a post listing the cylinder order as L rear #1 , R Rear #3 , L front #2 , R front #4 but just that one post, haven't found the full numbering in the service manual and I found contradictory info in the ever reliable "fixya" :roll eyes: The manual synch procedure shows the left rear as #1 , a few posts stated well yeah 1 and 3 need to be in the same bank (rear) as well as 2 and 4 together in front. So the jets should be both left side 122.5 front right 120 rear right 117.5 I wouldn't doubt this but... that's not how the jets were arranged when I pulled the float bowls. This will be oopsie number two found on day two of my ownership. Installed wrong would not surprise me, the "shop" that took the PO's mooney didn't even kiss him when they got paid. Still I would like confirmation before reinstalling the carbs. Thanks for any help and I'm finding lots of good stuff in this forum. 122.5 120 122.5 117.5 Or when looking into the carbs from the bottom on the bench, choke knob on left 122.5 117.5 122.5 120
  19. Hadn't been into set of venture carbs for a while, but a new to me 99RSV had been fuggled by a "motorcycle shop". Gas was dripping, pouring out of the carbs, couple things I found; \\ three out of four rose.......... Turns out "mr cycle shop" wasn't the sharpest pencil, but he only charged the PO a few hundred for his carb "services" after lubing with a bit of dielectric silicone grease I gently stretched the diaphragm over a spray can for a few minutes, this let me get it in the body groove and get the cover back on, rechecked with compressed air, all FOUR slides now rise as they should. The adventure continues, pulled the float valve on that body, o-ring and float tip look good screen was clean. Will go through all four, checking all jets, orifices, will set floats (thanks Goose). Gonna kill me to have wait for bowl seals to arrive. Anyone got a down and dirty seal swelling trick that won't stretch it out? I'm hoping to get this beast in shape and do a camping Lake Superior circle tour in August!
  20. So excited going to get a 99 tomorrow. but today... meh, clean up after a family reunion yesterday, HER side, LOL
