Impressions after 100 miles
videoarizona replied to Patmac6075's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
(Perhaps I should add, throttle response is slower than my 750 as well. It's not bad, just a tad slow, I had chalked it up to V4 engine and the extra weight of the bike...perhaps I'm nit picking, and if I weren't having the 5k issue I wouldn't even mention it (so when I say a "tad" slow...it really is, just a tad slow to respond to throttle input....perhaps better put not exactly "crisp".) Hmmm. Could be anything from older plugs, plug wires... to carbs. Usually a slight hesitation would be the carb slides not responding properly. I say this since timing is not adjustable. High speed miss is usually plugs/wires and/or a dirty fuel filter and/or fuel float level. Since you've had the carbs checked and balanced. I would change out plugs and wires. Both are cheap enough and available at any auto store or on-line. Research this site for info on wires/caps and plugs. Lots of info. If that doesn't help...then back to the carbs. Find another member nearby and re-sync your carbs. Pull the covers off and check the diaphrams for pin hole leaks. There should not be any throttle hesitation. Now.. the bike won't get up and go as quickly as a lighter bike...but there shouldn't be any hesitation...just flat out acceleration right up to red line! BTW, mine doesn't get moving until around 4K rpm. Then it's scary fast! Hope this helps, david -
Glad you got everything settled. BUT, I was going to recommend some Grip Puppy's. Just got to the discussion to late! http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008FD6DXW/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I have them on all three scoots...they solved the problem of grips to small for me. Cheap way for me to find out if bigger grips help! david

I'm your size.....220lbs, 5'10" with 30" inseam. 67 years young. I started riding in 1965..typical small Yamaha's and Hondas. Took a long break to build a career, raise family...etc.. Came back to riding on a Yamaha VStar 650 Classic, took the riders course. One year later, sold the 650 and bought the VStar 950 Tourer. Love that bike...still have it. Then bought a 1st Gen 89 Venture Royale. Very top heavy...but as my buddy with an HD Ultra Classic said...you will get used to it. It was scary at first to ride 2 up knowing how top heavy the older Ventures are. But I persisted....Still have it as well! Now I've added the 2nd Gen 2005 Royal Star Venture. Heavier but lower to ground. Bottom line: You can handle the 2nd Gen Venture. You will be able to put both feet down. If you lower the forks 1 inch...the low speed handling will improve and your feet will fit the ground even better! So yea, I think you could handle the 2nd Gen Venture. BUT...unless you feel very comfortable on 2 wheels, I would recommend a 950 size bike for a year. Just to get used to the size and weight. I'm glad I did. Don't think that the 950 size is to small...I can cruise all day at 80mph with my 950T. It's 650 pounds so it's a big bike to get used to but it's low to the ground and very easy to handle! So...your choice here. If I can handle the 05...then so can you. It's all a matter of practice and more practice to get the confidence level up. I chose the take my time and move up in size as my confidence built! BTW, had a GoldWing guy come over this morning and ogle my 89. He had never seen one. Thought it was very cool! I smiled lots! quieting mufflers back down
videoarizona replied to cruiserlover's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Harley Davidson Exhaust System #65539-95 is what I have. BTW, still have a pair of HD mufflers from a 2012 Ultra Classic. My friend wanted $75 as they are clean... but I'll take $50 paypal...plus shipping. Would like them out of my garage! See pics in my ad. david -
Latest update: New Pirelli installed up front yesterday. Totally changed the way the bike handles in slow speed turns. Much more neutral. Still a bit biased wanting to turn "into the turn"...but much easier to handle now. Slow speed starts and stops and u-turns are a piece of cake. So...my front end issues were worn front tire and loose head bearings. I can't wait to lower the front forks 3/4 of an inch. I bet she will be really nice! I know the Pirelli MT66's are considered a "value" tire....but I gotta say they are great over the tar cracks and miscellaneous ridges on the road. Don't even wiggle! At 40 psi now for front...and 40 for rear. Going to drop it down to 38 in front and go for a short run tonight. See if that keeps the handling but adds a bit more comfort. Changed headlight to an Ultra bulb...going to check it's alignment. Boy that was a bear to get in there and change the bulb! david

Always welcome, Scott. The advice and encouragement I've received here over the past year is worth far more than $$.

Thanks, Kev. I donated enough to cover a meal or two for someone. My pleasure, guys and gals! Ride safe and have a great time! david

Impressions after 100 miles

That's nothing more than a slack cable on the cruise, most likely. Don't expect it to hold immediately...takes a few seconds for the vacuum unit to pull the throttle cable in to where it actually matches what you are holding with your hand. Mine was just like that. After a few seconds it would grab hold and the speed would start to climb to where I set it. All in all...it would take 10 to 15 seconds for it to be cruising at the speed I set. Check the amount of free play in both the throttle and cruise control cables. Manual available for download on this site. After I did mine...it takes about half the time as it used to. I'm good with that. Heck..it's an 80's technology computer! Probably a 1 bit one at that! david -
Can't help but feel my MPG sucks....
videoarizona replied to Great White's topic in General Tech Talk
Your gas mileage should go up as you keep using it. Suggest you throw a little Gumout in now and then until your mpg's settle down to a constant number (as constant as we can get with a 1st gen - those smiles from throttle twists are easy to enjoy!) Once you get her settled down...you can look into the mixture, etc.. Richer is far better than lean with those V4's. Good to hear! david -
We can't make it...but if you open the paypal account, I'll be glad to throw in some bux to help defray the costs. Paying it forward, don't cha know... david

Front fairing Dampers
videoarizona replied to videoarizona's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Well...tried fitting the one damper I have to the bars last night. Duh! Never noticed I have Baron's 1 1/2" riser extensions. Those little rubbers are not going to fit the way they should now! Will have to figure something else out. The lower part of the fairing isn't hitting anything, but it's really, really close! Thoughts for a hot summer day when I can't ride...tool time! -
Not having much experience with the 05 yet...I can only guess. Most of my past experiences with headphones and speakers come down to dirty contacts....which is why sometimes the speakers don't cutout. Maybe the Ventures are designed to leave some tunes on the speakers??? I would think that would be counter productive to a small amplifier that's struggling to be heard at 75 mph. I'm going with either a bad or dirty switch somewhere in the amp or a miss-adjusted/bad circuit if the switch is electronic. The latter would be my guess.

Can't help but feel my MPG sucks....
videoarizona replied to Great White's topic in General Tech Talk
Something is to rich....for sure. Sucking off the bottom can be a major issue as well if the filter screens on top of the pickups are gone or shot. Doesn't take much to make a carb run poorly. Hope you figure it out. My biggest issue with the 89 is my right hand. Keeps wanting to crank the throttle! The 05 I don't have that same urge. Plus, the more I ride it (only had it one month), the better my mpg's are getting. Probably cleaning itself out with the Costco gas I buy and little doses of Seafoam 1st two tanks. No Seafoam this last tank just to see how things are going. Best mileage yet. -
Nice surprise today...
videoarizona replied to videoarizona's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Well...another surprise.... The dealer guys and gals were really nice. I was 30 minutes early and they were happy to see me. Seems an RSV is a unique item! People came and went to see my scoot. 1: The new tire went on slick...they added balance beads (?) instead of weight balancing. Seemed to be ok coming home but lots of headwind/cross winds so don't really know. 2: Clutch fluid was dirty. Yep...good call, David. 3: New fuel filter was a good call as well...old one was a cheapie and was pretty dirty. 4: They went over bike with fine tooth comb...twice. Showed me everything they looked at. All as good. All on paper too...both for their records and mine. I did ask if anyone had any experience on a 1st gen...and no they don't. But one guy did say he would pull the manual and be happy to work on mine if I bring it in. He thought they should still have all the "special" tools and such. I got the feeling even the "young-uns" at the store like the big bikes! The guy who took my scoot for the test ride after service was young with a long pony tail...he was grinning! Made me smile. Oh...they did an oil change and filter as well....Yamalube 20-50weight. Total: $164.00 I'm ok with that. Yep...could have done it myself...but I wanted to try these guys out...just in case. I think they "passed the test", so to speak. Oh...Puc...forgot the trailer. Never made it to Harbor Freight. Barely had time to get breakfast and they called me that they were done! Walking back...got to watch bike go by. Not very often you get to see your scoot go by! Sure is pretty! david P.S. Mpg's up...46 mpg after 97 miles coming home. Took a detour... P.S.S. Other dealer never called me back....3 days. Sad on customer relations, me thinks. -
Puc...shims...that's what I was trying to say! Thanks! I couldn't remember the terms. Anywho..I did that with my 650 after changing pipes and air intake. And Kevin...yea our CV carbs can somewhat compensate on their own...but not from sea level to 8,000 feet. They will run rich regardless. Need to make some changes..especially if you are running up about 9K feet in the hills. I remember that well with my Bugeye and those 2 SU's. So easy to change mixture on those with a knob at bottom of each carb as well as another knob on the distributor to change advance! Ahead of their time, those Brits in 1960! david

Totally agree with above. A known starting point is important when you buy a used machine. david -
If Rick doesn't want the CD player..I'm interested in it. Would probably need the 13 pin (?) cable that runs from fairing to saddlebag as well. If it is run separately from main harness. I have a ton of CD's in my music library... Regardless....I agree the speaker holes would be easy to fill in...or a bit harder...cut out, build a box and use for sun glass storage, etc.. The tape deck and amp would be easy as well...just unbolt. Some of the wiring harness may have to stay...like the CD or CB...if they combine with main harness. May be separate...haven't looked. CB pops out. Hmm...I think you could easily get everything off..including the antennas and mounts. Just try to get as much wiring as possible. Interesting idea...with blue tooth you can do everything you currently have except maybe CB...and do so on your helmet wirelessly! david

At the dealer today...no one on the sales floor was aware of any new big bike coming from Yamaha. Of course, they were rather young...some still in diapers. The floor manager....(not quite so young) wistfully said he hopes Yamaha does come out with another big touring bike. He could sell it. When I rode up on the 2nd Gen....they all came out to look at the "big" bike. When I mentioned I had a 1st gen as well...I got the "Deer in the headlight look" from some and a few smiles from others. The guy who test rode my scoot after service...was all smiles, however, and was bragging to his service buddies about how comfortable the ride was. I felt good! david

Excellent! LOL!! Nailed it...I want two! david

"Prayers Up and Blessings Down Rick!! " Quote from Cowpuc. I can't say it any better! Rick...heal fast, rest easy! Your friendship and skills are appreciated more than you could know. david

Well done, Scott! -
Our are carbs adjustable? As in..are the sliders grooved to allow different settings for mixture? If yes, there is your answer, If no, another ball game. Different jet sizes. My guess would be contact a dealer in Albuquerque area...ask them about the problem. I would think they have the knowledge of jetting at higher altitude... david

Note to self: Never hurts to ask. This morning I called the RideNow PowerSport dealer on Ina rd in Tucson. They responded to my questions. 1: Yes they would mount the new tire for me, check the bearings, check the rim, balance, etc. for $50. 2: I asked about flushing out the clutch system...sure...$55. DOT4. 3: I asked about fuel filter...sure for the cost of filter. They will throw in a safety check on the rest of the scoot. So tomorrow morning I get a nice morning ride up to Tucson!! ... and get to go explore Harbor Freight a few doors down. Always willing to look for things to add to my wish list! david PS. the same brand dealer on 22nd street has yet to return my phone call...from yesterday. I've bought a bike from them, been in for service, bought parts...not one word back. Told the lady on the phone that they lost me...

I'd probably kill myself trying that. Got a little collapsable mirror I can hold down there while I'm sitting on scoot. About $3.

quieting mufflers back down

Here's some pics of my HD muffs and the way they are mounted. Not my mounting idea, but I do like it...
