  1. Not to get us off riding The Whine Testing Trail but something just occurred to me that might be prudent.. IMHO, it is not uncommon for rusty fuel tanks to end up being the cause for sticky/stuck float valves. Rust can be so tiny that even the best fuel filter can't capture it but easily get caught up in that little valve. Another thing I think I would do if that purdy scoot were mine @Roadflyer is to drain the tank, leave it open for a day or so so it can dry out and then inspect it internally to check for rust.. If you do this you may want to pay special attention to the roof of the tank.. In the end, even if you find it clean as a whistle,,, you will be starting out knowing you are not running the risk of contaminating your carbs with rust and you will get any garbage out of the bottom of the tank that frequents those places... May be worth a check!!
  2. :scared::scared::clap2::clap2::thumbsup: ABSOLUTELY WOWZY WOW WOW WOW @made2care!!! CONGRATS on a job VERY well done my friend!!! THAT is just awesome!!!!!! Puc
  3. Nailed me cold with that one brother,, spot on... Matter of fact,,, honing a bevel on a straight cut was considered part of a good tune up back than .... My ohhh my how times have changed... Sort of akin to smearing a lite coat of "Seal All" on those cases to close off some of the pores in the castings to keep the oil from seeping thru ... Speaking of beveling on metrics though,, when the 750 Virago's first came out, they had known issues with the starter gears = even some of new ones sounded like they had rocks in the primary starter engagement system.. Due to the early years of beveling and some trial and error,, I found that adding relief in the same way REALLY helped in quieting em down... To Bevel Or Not To Bevel = this is the question
  4. Years ago,, when I was just a young Puc and my own "Harvest Moon" started peaking thru my regressing hair line, it was common for the gang sitting around the campfire during Deer Season with the camp fire reflecting off my Harvest Moon to start singing that song. It was a fine display of love and teasing between lop eared buddy varmints that I miss (haven't hunted for years) and I could not help myself by partaking in that same spirit one more time - even though that darling wife of mine warned me not too .. It was just another example of my character flaw getting away from me brother .. And yes,, that hat is DEFINITELY something to be jealous of,,, a TRUE 1 of a kind "moon" cover !!! You got a keeper there brother!! I know for a fact that I am not alone my coveting spirit,,, just look at the number count of respondents to the Contest in competition to win that awesome prize:banana:(ya did a GRAND thing there Bossman!!). It is now my deepest hope and most sincere desire that Freebird continues the "game" on an annual basis to allow jealous lop eared varmints such as my self one more chance to compete once again for a Harvest Moon cover of my own !! CONGRATS MY BROTHER!!!!
  5. That is exactly what I would do too Flyer only before I stuck the original club hub into the motor you are running, I would take a dremel tool or die grinder and just add a little relief on the tooth of each gear tooth (not the face of the teeth that drives the gears, just the ends where they start the mesh with the mating gear) and see if that didnt run a lot quieter just for kicks.. Or,, maybe trying the original engines hub first to see if it's already quieter and then do the alterations on the one that is noisier... Tweek Tweek Tweek until ya get er where ya want her.. Tweekin's fun:thumbsup: I would also do the bead blasting for stress relief that @WildBill1 mentions!! IMHO, that is good point of interest.. Bottom line,, I still have a sneaking hunch that a lot of the noise has to do with the straight cut drive/driven gears associated with the clutch system. IMHO, straight cuts are stronger then helical but they do tend to be noisier..
  6. @Condor is spot on.. It's repetitive to Jacks info but was fun to do non-the-less... In the youtube text I wrote: ""A good friend of mine is doing the front brake upgrade on his 2013 Yamaha Royal Star Venture (RSV) by putting R1 calipers on it. This is a common upgrade for improved braking on the Venture. The question came up by my buddie, BikerJohn, concerning the measurement of the distance between mount bolts on the R1. I don't have access to a later model Venture (mine have all been MK1, 83/84 models which I know will not swap with the R1) to compare to but I do have a 2001 R1. Hope this helps solve the measurement question John and maybe someone else looking for this info too brother!!"" and the video just for you @bikerjohn:
  7. :rotfl:,,, no Tip,, my laughter outburst had nothing to do with you,, just two buddies having fun,,,, SHEESH Corporal Newkirk,,, ya ALMOST got me in trouble over that one :rotf:
  8. NICE Jack,, real nice!! I am gonna grab the Verniers in the A.M. and take some measurements on Maggie, my 01 R1, while recording the measuring and post it up here too... Maybe help John and others wanting to do this switch.. I know one thing for absolute sure,,, the stock OEM calipers on Maggie will put her into a two finger precision back wheel off the ground "stoppie" at any speed so those multi pot R1 calipers REALLY stop!! Probably wont do the same for the heavier RSV but DEFINITELY a far more functionally adequate system to those OEM's found on the MK1 1st Gens I have ridden thru the years!!!! Have no fear John,, between all your lop eared VR varmints friends,,, we'll find the answer!!!
  9. ,, TOTALLY AWESOME AND DOUBLE :dancefool::clap2: HERE YA LOP EARED SNOW TOSSIN VARMINT!! It brings a HUGE on my face hearing you are able to get back the most AWESOME project known in VR varmint land = headed to the wild blue yonder!!! I thank God you are getting back on your feet my brother!! I too know how you feel,, while not quite as exciting as your surface to air missile (if your a spy looking for bad guys building naughty things - I say "surface to air missile" in tonge in cheek mode = my buddy is building an RC Air Plane NOT a real surface to air missile = by the way,,, he doesn't REALLY have a machine that control's the weather either - thought I better make that known too )... I have yet to even site in and/or even felt good enough to really putting my AR builds thru their paces.. There they set with only my Son In Law and my Grandson having fired em when they came from California for my daughters wedding.. Haven't even got sites permenatly mounted - what a SHAME.. I have a pigeon tosser I built up to mount on the back of our pickup truck to take Tippy out and see if she can bust a tossed clay bird = that sweet lady waits patiently for my health to recoup and for my kids to stop having babies (got two more Grand Kids due in January :pushups: - that traveling and sleeping in the back of our car as Tip drives us to and from the little ones also takes priority over shootin fun.. Always something aint it Reading this update of yours is a REAL blessing Jeff!!! I still have HIGH hopes of finding the path to your region to witness LAUNCH DAY,,, I would LOVE to be there if at all possible!!!!!! THAT would be one truly eventful way for two lop eared wild eyed brother varmints to enjoy life together again!!! GOOOOOOOO FOOL GOOOOO:dancefool::dancefool::dancefool:
  10. Like I just wrote in my PM to you brother,, I REALLY have no clue BUT,, if you would like, I can make a quick video of measuring my 01 R1 calipers and post it up for you if you would like.. Be more than happy to do so my Texas Hero!!! You DID get a new scoot? 's are a minimal requirement around here,,, it's The Code ya know
  11. BEAUTIFUL SCOOT FLYER,,, JUST GORGEOUS!!! While neither here nor there and strickly from a knowing nothing of what you saw in relating to the prior engines failure,,,, sounds to me more like a leaky/sticky float valve allowed fuel into that jug and, slowly over time, the fuel washed the cylinder of its lube and left behind enough fuel in the combustion chamber to hydrolock it.. I only say that cause,, and this is JUST an opinion,, the combustability of coolant is low and I highly suspect that the damage you describe would,, more opinion here, be the result of combustion (not enough umphhh from a starter to do that).. Concerning the "whine"... Again,, another opinion here,,, I have yet to meet a V-4 of our type that didnt have some form of it,,, V-Maxes to RSV's,, its as common and as well known as the mighty V-4's perfect performance levels.. Here is a short video of Tip (my wife) and I doing some whine testing on @videoarizona's RSV... Sound familiar? Is yours worse or better? Being a person who always enjoyed tweeking and having long since being suspicious that the whine of our 83's was being produced by the straight cut drive gears pushing the clutch,,, I have always wondered if grinding a small edge of relief on the tips of the gear faces may cut some noise down.. A test/trial that I never got around to as I actually enjoy listening to the sounds of a healthy V-4 singing it's song (always reminded me of a gear driven super charger spooling up LOL).. If you are of the tweekin type and find the whine annoying,,, and still have a "parts motor" left over?,,, perhaps pulling the clutch on the old one and knocking the edge of the gear tips (not all,,, just a slight 45 ground at an angle on each meeting edge) would quiet it some... Then swapping in the altered clutch and mating gears to see the results... Who knows,, you may solve a life long issue and become a multi million air in the process Any of that make sense? Probably not At any rate,, CONGRATS on the scoot!! SHE'S A DANDY!!
  12. I may be one of those lop eared loser varmints of whom you speak BUT please add me to the list of those same varmints who are very thankful "The Cap" went to someone who can use it .. Here is song dedicated to you and your fortune my brother!! P.S. - Willie is GORGEOUS P.S.S. - CONGRATS on the job well done in winning "The Cap" Venturesome!!! P.P.S.S. - Tippy just scolded me for being mean to you.. She says "play nice and take that down!!" = I tried but I cant find my delete button LOL
  13. WOWZY WOW WOW WOW,,, that is an AWESOME way to honor those that died!! I vividly remember that horrible day when the news broke about the unfortunate souls who happen to be caught in the path of that tragity.. THANK YOU for attending and for sharing the story with us Grubsie. Hopefully the Monument will do it's job in serving as a reminder to all of us, far and wide, to remember how deadly the highway's can be and how quickly not paying attention while driving can be. My very soul reaches out to the family and friends of those that gave it all in their final moments,, INDEED,, Prayers Up.. RIP Fallen 7
  14. Pleasure meeting you too brother,, that Meet n Greet/MD stuff is a blast = putting faces with names = GOOD STUFF!!! Nooo,, never did ride The Hat, now that you mention it and I jumped on to Maps to get a peek = DEFINITELY will do and appreciate the inspiration!! We have done a fair amount of Moab (both on and off road)/Canyon Lands NP and Capital Reefs NP thru the years but just never Ventured down to Mexican Hat to play.. Matter of fact, to this point (THANK YOU TNT FOR THIS) had never even heard of it BUT have now!! Another one mentioned to us by a fellow tourer that we bumped into at Mesa Verde NP (WOW) is a place called "Telluride?" up above Silverton CO.. Sounded like quite a joint so maybe on our next adVenture, Tip/Trooper and I will chase em both down!! Soooooo many GREAT CTFW(s) opportunities - enough to last a life time
  15. I'm not taking this laying down,,, RECOUNT RECOUNT RECOUNT :crackup::crackup::witch_brew::rotfl: What an AWESOME contest Bossman = YOU are DA MAN!! Soooo much fun hearing from everyone.. PLEASE do it again soon ya lop eared Boss of bosses varmint!! :ice_congrats-vi6886:ice_congrats-vi6886 VENTURESOME!!!!! :You_Rock_Emoticon:
  16. Yep.. the OEM mounts work awesome IMHO... Very secure.. Just make sure the lock seats well into the connector when you snap em back on after removal for maintenance and the key is moved over to the lock position.. It almost impossible for the bags to sneak off once they are locked on. I did loose one of the button bolts that slide into the reciever on the sub frame once years ago.. It's not a bad idea to double check those button bolts for tightness (they are Allen Head if memory serves correctly), also the grommet on those bolts can be worn excessively and cause looseness in the bag mounts.. Another maintenance item that I found handy in my case was lubing the lock mechanizms internally before they get sticky and make it hard to get into the bags and/or get the bags off... Not a bad job and definitely worth the time as Murphy LOVES to attack those locks making them unopenable at the most incovient of times.. Typical Murphy stuff,,, just gotta try and stay one step ahead of the lop eared adding to the excitement of CTFW varmint.... LOOKING GREAT THERE BROTHER!! GOOD JOB!! :clap2::clap2::dancefool:
  17. Got that right brother,,, I searched all over the place and never ever did find one!! Came to the conclusion that a Semi Truck ran it over and they never did rebuild it We stayed over night up on "The Divide at Wolf Creek Pass" = mountain lion and elk tracks all over up there!!!!! AMAZING PLACE in and of itself!! The Code Talker display was icing on the cake!!
  18. You lop eared sneaky varmint,, you got a ROCKET 3 and aint posted no pics of it or wild stories and reports of how you like it??? Come on,,, give (in another thread of course so you dont have to sit in the perverbial penalty box)!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I waited for 2 hours to ride a Rocket 3 once and never did get to ride one - LOVE the looks!!! Better yet Cha,,, make a video for us
  19. I use to ride nekid a lot on my 83's to avoid overheating in the desert sun when traveling in far off isolated desert places but only on my 83's cause I could be gone in a streak if needed to out run someone who got upset at my unusual ride style and the tupperware of the 83's offered great protection from which you speak.. I think if I were to ride nekid on an open motored scoot,, be it a hot tempered air cooled scoot with all those hot pieces down there or even an open motored water cooled scoot I would DEFINITELY at least keep an old leather welding jacket onboard to drape over the hot parts so I didnt burn something I didnt want burnt and/or be able to wrap my lower disstrimities in should someone on a faster bike come chasing after me to put a knot on my head..
  20. Heyyyy ya lop eared fellow Butter Nut loving varmint,, THANKS for the welcome home and THANKS for following up on this latest barage!! Pretty cool stuff INDEED!! I had a gut feeling that if anyone would have a lamp made out of an army tank or M1 Garand turned into a garage door opener it would be YOU Glad you enjoyed following along brother and thanks for compliments!! By the way,,, not sure a mono pod would help,,, sort of like the bi-pods on my AR's that never get folded down, been doing the old one handed videoing routine for a long time now and I would probably poke my eye out with a mono pod attached to my camera at this point Hey Jack,, was just with my daughter who is your neighbor,,, she was telling me about the "Giant Pumpkin Contest" that was held in Elk Grove recently,,, ever hear of it? They had one of great big ol California pumpkins come in at just under 2000 pounds !! She said that my little one year old grandson laughed histarically at one of the big ones that the gutted out and then paddled around "the pond" like a row boat !! I should of stayed another month cause THAT woulda made some AWESOME VR footage!!!!!!!!!!
  21. You are more than welcome my brother,, and thank you for the compliment on the reporting!! You definitely hit the nail on the head on that one my friend, not unlike other minority groups who laid it all on the line in defense of our way of life, those Code Talkers really got shorted on recognition they deserved but (as you know cause you saw the same display) thankfully there are those who are not shy about making sure they are not forgotten. What a reminder of the price of the freedom we still enjoy to this very day!!
  22. Heck of 1st post Charlie!!! Would LOVE to see pics of your project Ariel!! Those scoot were soooo cool!! Have done a fair amount of bike restoration here in the States - can't even imagine trying to source parts for an Ariel - YOU DA MAN!! You got stock exhaust on yours? Is it the standard "diamond" shaped? Betcha those are made of UNATTAINABLE nowadays.. Puc
  23. :bowdown::usa:
  24. You are more than welcome Sly, always enjoy the dialog!! You have my permission to use anything I post in your involvement with assisting the Lord's work in assisting charities or whatever.. Hope it helps in some small way!! Sad thing this homeless mess is, heartbreaking to say the least. My take and the soul touching side of the sign for was/is the part where it says on the sign "Help Our Community" = definitely shows where the owner of the BK's heart is at IMHO.. God Bless my eternal brother! Puc
  25. or part #4 as shown here my friend? https://www.yamahapartsnation.com/oemparts/a/yam/50042b18f8700209bc789787/handle-switch-lever
