  1. I'm definitely going to get it running before dumping major time into the bodywork. That should be the easy part, if the guy was shooting straight with me. And it was my friend's dad that gave me this thing, so I fear incompetence far more than malice in this case. Even before that I need to get the title changed over. It hasn't been registered in a looong time. Hate to register something that might never see the road. On the other hand, I'd hate to put a bunch of work into it and find out there's a problem with the paperwork. I like where your head's at for sure. Unfortunately, as much as I can do myself, welding is not in my wheelhouse. I can fab up some brackets and odds and ends, but I won't be messing with the frame. At least, not before I have to ride it. I am considering making it a rat bike, but I can't picture that until I get everything ripped off of it. And as boring as it is, fixing up the boxes and everything would make it fun to ride with the wife. Plus, my last bike was a 2011 Stryker with hardly anything left stock on it. I put 50k miles on that bike, and found out that it was about as raked out as I'd like to get. And I totally agree - if I can't get it running well with (relatively) little hassle I'll be writing this one off. So far I'm reckoning spending less than $500 on this project, and right now is more about the project than the ride. There's a thousand ways that can get blown out of the water fast, but that more than accounts for the stuff I already know I'll need. I enjoy the challenge taking on new things. I've been focused on woodworking for a couple years, time to change it up for a bit. I'm in Dallas, more or less. With this cold snap we got last week, it looks like I don't need to be in a great hurry on this one. Thanks for the welcome, everyone. I'll be around.

  2. if you type a post and wish to "tag" somebody, that means to insert their name in a way that they will receive notification of the post and can reply if needed, here is how its done. On the old site, you just typed their username with the @ sign in front of it. Example @freebird. That no longer works on the new site however. The way you do it now is basically the same. You type the @ sign and then start typing their username. As you type, a dropdown menu will appear and you have to select their name from the menu. If I start typing @Freebird , freebird will show up in the menu. I just click on that and it inserts the username for me. It's actually much better this way because people use all types of different spellings for their username. If you just get the first two or three letters correct, you don't have to worry about spelling the rest of it. Just look a the list as you type and then click on the name when you see it.

  3. I did notice that @Freebird and I thought that was great because like you said the old way was subject to the correct spelling and format.

  4. @saddlebum,,, sir you need to be corrected, I did not but those crimpy things at Walmart, I got them from Home Hardware, and yes I always considered them to be cheap and didn't do the job as a good tool would. Mighty happy to be the inheritor of your old crimp tool, even though I had to get the rheumatism out of it, but since then, I closely guard it's whereabouts, especially when you are around. Funny how a feller never has enough time to go get the proper tool when it's needed and can never remember to get one when he's at the store eh?

  6. I have a few mowing rules. 1. I hate mowing. 2. I will always be the last person on the block to mow for the first time in spring, and NEVER before May. 3. I hate mowing. 4. I will always be the first person on the block to mow for the last time in fall, and NEVER after September. 5. I hate mowing 6. I NEVER fertilize, that only makes for more mowing. 7. I hate mowing. 8. Drought and that lovely shade of brown that grass gets to is a good thing, I NEVER water, that promotes mowing. 9. I hate mowing. 10. NEVER EVER will I mow twice in the same week, never for any reason. Did I ever mention that I hate mowing? And then there is that @cowpuc character that like to poke the bear, thinks that no one can read thru things like s&*w that he is realy trying to say SNOW.

  8. As a general rule of thumb, you get what you pay for. Ricks performance sells a decent performance stator, slightly higher output. There's not enough room in the case to put a HO stator as you need more windings to accomplish that. Personally I would go with the factory Yamaha reg/rec as it does just fine. One of the main culprits of the reg/rec failing is a dirty connector where it plugs into the wire harness. If the ground wire is dirty it wont shunt properly and builds up heat snd melts the connecter causing the unit to fail. I always use dielectric grease in those types of connections to help seal them keeping the corrosion away. Hope this helps you out a bit.
