cowpuc Posted August 21, 2014 Share #1 Posted August 21, 2014 HELLPPPPPPPPP Every since I upgraded my Mozilla software I have gotten into a HORNETS nest of pop up stuff.. Hopefully whatever it is, its not contagious here!!! If it is, I apologize for any harm I have done!!! Anyway, I have searched on google for free pop up protection and tried a couple,, GOT NO WHERE!! One of them that I downloaded had me run a scan and came back with over 1900 offensive critters!!! Only problem was, after going thru alllllll the process they wanted me to "join" something by giving them a credit card number BEFORE they would remove the offending stuff.... I DID NOT do so,, fearing even more problems.. I am running window's 7, use Firefox for a browser.. Anyone know of a downloadable free anti pop up package that actually is worth the time and effort? If not, should I go shopping at Best Buy or something for some software and if so, whats the best bang for the buck? OH MY GOSH,, this just occurred to me,,, I hope this goofy computer of mine wasnt to blame for the recent episode we had on here!!!!!!!!! BETTER DO THIS NOW - THANKS FOR ANY AND ALL YOUR ADVICE IN ADVANCE (gotta keep clicking stuff off and if they completely take over I may not be able to get back on to thank you!!! I googled malwarebites, went to their actual website and tried their free download - indeed, that one allowed me to remove the stuff it found and things seem to be doing better (I just now had one pop up BUT I was getting 2 for everyone I tried to click off before I ran that program)!! Got a PM from a good friend for another one to try and I am about to give it a shot.. When you ran their program up to the point of giving your CC number, you installed the malware even deeper and made it harder to get rid of. Malwarebytes gets rid of most but not all bad things. Malwarebytes. Full Anti-virus scan. Check add-ons in IE programs tab. (But, I use it when nothing else works,,, cause it could remove some friendly files. (Seen a blog saying someone lost a game license file. I don't game.) Spent a day trying to remove it and then decided to do a complete reformat and install. Takes some time to do, mainly installing all the drivers/updates and software but it does clear everything up. After that is done, run regedit and look in hkcu/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/run and runonce. Usually there is not much if anything in there. If you don't recognize what it is, remove it. Then go to hklm/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/run and runonce in that one also and do the same thing. Bad things can hide in other areas, but that is going to get most of it out with out a reinstall. BTW, a reinstall IS the only way to assure you don't have any nasties in the machine. It may be free, but you get what you pay for. like I said, I have been using it and my wife has been using it for a couple of years on the recommendation of our son who just graduated with a degree in computer science and we have not had any issues with virus or ad ware. One is in charge of a World wide company the other the entire state of Michigan. I have it solely in five computers, no problems. I have had serious problems with any anti Virus I pay for, they high jack your system and force things on you .... the programs themselves are spyware. Norton is the worst I think. And once it is on there, it will never be all the way off. I think MS has an interest in protecting their own program. Just set it up right, update and don't be stupid with things. I run Kaspersky Internet Security and I've never had a problem in a few years with it. I've seen people royally screw it up by not following instructions though. The only one I've personally had more fun with was Sophos, but it has an issue with false positives on a couple benign items. I'll agree with you about most of the pay programs, but I can't knock the one I use, and I play with active malware samples. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I use: CCleaner - regular cleaning of HD and registry Malwarebytes - Heuritics Cleaning Avast Internet Security (main program) Hijack This - after the fact mostly 3rd party stuff I get from kids and friends Trojan Hunter - After the fact - as above Avast does NOT take over computer like McAfee or Norton. It has caught every virus...and got rid of even the one's I unknowingly let it... Although a new kid on the block is supposed to be quite good as well...Vipre. Oh and popups? Get a different browser.
