GolfVenture Posted November 29, 2017 Share #1 Posted November 29, 2017 Several years ago I bought a new Homelite Pressure with a Honda engine. One of those 'Start up on 1st pull" And it really does start up on 1st pull. Well this spring the engine started to kick back and the kick back got worst thru the summer. Took the both hoses off and the kick back is till there. And the kick back is really bad. Seems like it could pull my shoulder out. So I took the plug out and pulled. Pulls smooth. Anyone have a solution besides taking it in for service. tks.
rneal55555 Posted November 29, 2017 Share #2 Posted November 29, 2017 ON mine it pulls hard unless I hold the valve on the wand up while I'm starting it. Without a flow path on the discharge end your building water pressure. I also have never attempted to start it without water being supplied as that is what cools and lubricates the Pump. baylensman Posted November 29, 2017 Share #3 Posted November 29, 2017 (edited) As above it sounds like a pump issue. However the honda and other "easy pull" engine have a small bump on the cam shaft to release compression. The bump is so small that at run speed it has no effect but on the pull of the rope it just enough to stop that kick. That may have been smooth out over the years or there is crud under the valve spring. Just my 2 cents Edited December 1, 2017 by baylensman
Yammer Dan Posted November 29, 2017 Share #4 Posted November 29, 2017 I would take it apart and clean the Mag and check timing.

Flyinfool Posted November 30, 2017 Share #6 Posted November 30, 2017 One good kick may have sheared the key on the flywheel and caused a change in timing. Check to see if the key slots are still lined up.
mm482 Posted November 30, 2017 Share #7 Posted November 30, 2017 (edited) I would check the engine valve adjustments. On some small engines the compression release will not work if valves are out of adjustment. Edited December 1, 2017 by mm482
djh3 Posted November 30, 2017 Share #8 Posted November 30, 2017 I would take it apart and clean the Mag and check timing. Small engines like those Hondas have not had mags in years. The Honda is listed as electronic ignition. I think the 3 brigs I have are electronic also. I remember when they had points though.

Woody Posted December 1, 2017 Share #11 Posted December 1, 2017 I would take it apart and clean the Mag and check timing. even a small change in the key can change the timing enough to cause a kick back and while your there clean the magnet and the legs on the coil. If I was going that far I would just replace the key anyway.
