Custom fit light bar

Have been looking at some light bar to put below the trunk on my Red Baron. After looking at some offered for the bike I decided to buy one from "Super Bright Leds" that is a little wider than others I have seen and not specially made for the Venture. Did need a back plate to be made but that was easy - had it made from stainless mirror steel. Really like the looks of the bar but the only drag is that you can only wire it as the following options:

1. Running lights and turn signals.

2. Running lights and brake lights.

At least I can not find a way to do it in that way that I get running lights, turn signals as well as braking light since there are only three wires for the hookup + the ground wire, that is one for each turn signal and one for the running light. By hooking the turn signal wires to the brake light I get brake light instead of turn signals and vice versa..

Since I have the Harley brake lightbar installed I opted for the turn signals. Made the hookup that way that I can switch it over from turn signals to brake lights if I decide to chance it - plug and play.

What I like about this is that it is surrounded by Chrome, (have I mentioned that I like Chrome) the bar is a little wider (longer) than the other ones I have seen and also the backing plate I had made adds a little shine to it. Also made some spacers to put between the helmet locks where you fasten the backing plate to bring the bar out a little further.

Am also having a box made that goes into the space between the tubings in the Harley brake light bar (where the number plate is supposed to be). That will bring the number plate out a little further and also I will use the box to install connectors for all the wiring harness that is cramped into that little Chrome bezel behind the number plate bracket. Never liked this - space is much to small for all these wires and hardly any space if you add some accessories that need extra wires. Will post pictures when that is done - in progress.

You do know Steve (M61A1MECH) has an app for that rite? Well sort of. He sells a harness that's plug and play and I think now he will actually build you the complete light harness and you plug it in. LOL But if your like me I kind of like building some of this stuff myself. Looks good. And I thin it really helps out the back of the bike. The taillight situation is dismal on these bikes. My wife after following me home when we first got the bike said I needed to add something back there to light it up.

Jonas, what you need is a 5 wire to 4 wire trailer light adapter to get all functions. Hoppy makes one for around $30...

O.K. Bobby lets make a deal.

You supply me with this adapter as well as complete detailed instructions on how to make this work and I will send you a bottle of that world famous,,,,,,,,

Since you already have a trailer hitch, is your trailer a 4 wire or 5 wire?

If your bike is already wired for a 4 wire trailer then you already have the box that Bob mentioned already installed.

If your trailer is a 5 wire, then just get the harness from M61A1MECH.

Thanks for the info.

Have no idea if that trailer hitch is 5 or 4 wire - will have to look tomorrow. I am in contact with Steve and he has offered to send me this wire harness and guide me through this. Can not for the life of mine understand how this works without having an extra wire from the light bar for the brake lights but if you guys say it will work then I know it will.

Me and electricity,,,,,,,well, need the background to understand these things even though I usually scrabble my way through it.

Thank you all for the input and all the help - Highly apreciated. You guys are the best.

Be safe,

For some insight Jonas, a 4 wire system sends 12 volts to both the left and the right turn signals when the brakes are applied. the ground is turned on and off to make the light turn on and off for turn signals. For normal turn signal operation 12 volts is applied to either the left or right turn signal and as with the condition of brakes, the ground is switched on and off for that side. The 5 wire system to 4 wire system adapter merely makes that same conditions.

You can probably find an adapter in your country at any auto parts store or trailer supply store. Most US cars are 4 wire whereas most Japanese and European cars are 5 wire...

SAY WHAT?????:doh::think:

The ground is never switched in a 4 wire system. It is the 12V that is either flashed or steady on for break and turn. That is why there is just one ground wire and a separate wire for left and a separate wire for right turn/brake lights. The same filament is used for brake and turn signals.

Switching grounds ugh starting to sound like old 6volts LUCAS positive ground system :scared::scared::scared:
That could have been what I was thinking of at the time. I owned several MG's back in the day. Also I was thinking on the car side of the adapter, not the trailer side...
