I've had my 84 VR for a week now. The day of the purchase required a 400 or so mile ride to get it back to Sheridan from Cheyenne (and wouldn't you know, the day after I get it home, another VR comes up for sale in Billings, less than 2 hours away). So far, the CLASS is working fine, the Venture Cruise works, with a 5 MPH drift at times, and this one already has 2nd popping out so I know tranny work is in store for the winter. And the radio works, when it wants to. At the dealership, the salesman was very open about what he knew of the bike, and showed me that the cassette was a dead horse by plugging a tape into it. But as he did, the radio went dead too. The amplifier was still live as we could hear the speakers softly pop whenever we tried to turn the radio on. But no display and no sound. So I rode it home anyway. Near Buffalo, I fiddled with the power/volume switch a couple of times and the radio came back on. And since then, it has dropped off by itself during a ride, but fiddling with the switch got it back. The cassette is a lost cause, I'm convinced. I'm going to add XM and I saw the link to the site for mounting kits (although they seem aimed more at Sirius), but I'd like to hear from anyone who has already added XM.

I have an '83 standard.....the clutch resevoir (sp) ran dry so i put more fluid in and she was back to normal in a flash. That lasted about 15 miles the when I pulled in on the clutch there was NOTHING again. After I limped her home I checked the fluid level and it looked fine. Is there a place to bleed that system? Maybe I got some air in there messin' with things.

Ok guys my 83 is running great just turned 73,000 mi,Coming home from a meet & eat.My oil light came on while going down hwy.pulled over and checked level which is good - full of oil mobil one 15w50.I started back down the road no light untill about 10 mi it came back on,stop and checked? everything seems ok,light stayed on all the way home 15 more miles or so.Watched temp gauge too ,did great cool running in 90F heat.So am I missing something or just replace level sensor for oil and go on.Engine has no knocks or weird sounds like a second gen.I had to put that in . You know someone will make a crack at the 83 Venture. buddy

...and what a huge disappointment I suffered. The bike was picked up at noon, and the owner of this cycle business did take time to walk me out to the bike, and go over some basic things about it (mainly its operational procedures). He opened the trunks, and there - in the top one - laid a full gallon of antifreeze. We both did somewhat of a double-take, on this, and I immediately began to have some concerned thoughts. Why was that antifreeze in there? Was it something that had no bearing on a continuing problematic condition with the bike's cooling system, and just absentmindedly left? Or, was it directly related to his experiencing a defective condition, which required very frequent fillings? (These are the things which ran through my mind). ...................................................................................................... Then he proceeded to start it for me, and it was hard starting. He fiddled around with the choke, a few times, then got it to start. The bike coughed, for a little, and then began straighten up some. I finally got it to myself, and headed home. I found the bike to be sluggish, and then it began to backfire. The more throttle I gave it, the more frequent the backfiring became. When I arrived home I parked the bike, as I had errands to run which required my truck. A few hours later, I returned home, and decided to take the bike out on the expressway. It didn't really have the 'pick-up' that I remembered my former friend's VR having, and I thought that (maybe) it might have been sitting for a good while, and just needed some 'pushing'. That is when the backfiring became REALLY bad. I mean, it sounded as if someone was shooting a shotgun right behind my head (I kid you not). Then the bike began to lose power. Now (mind you) I am still on the expressway - with the throttle WIDE OPEN, and my speed began decreasing on its own. At that point, I opted for the nearest exit, and the bike shut off as I came to the off-ramp's traffic signal. I had a bear of a time restarting it (which I had to do numerous times), and - when it would restart, the engine could be heard in a very tired, lazy & sluggish laboring. It was all I could do to get it home, and more than a small portion of that distance was within coasting (because it KEPT shutting off). ....................................................................................................... So now, I feel like a fool. Do you remember the cartoons where the character, in the aftermath of a foolish act, would stand before this wooden contraption with a rope hanging from the front - and a boot attached to the back of two sticked ends? Well if you do, you also remember that character pulling the rope, which would cause the boot to kick him square in the butt. If I had that device I would be on it RIGHT NOW . Seriously though, I hope that things will work out with the bike. The dealership's service department DID promptly send a truck out to pick the bike up. But being a much older bike, I am sure that they will NOT lean towards doing the best job that they can to correct whatever the issue(s) is/are - but will, more than likely, take the 'band-aid' approach - giving just enough satisfaction to last for not much longer than the 30 day warranty period. When I do get it back, I am really considering taking it to another cycle shop, for the purpose of having an in-depth diagnostic test procedure done on it. I don't know what that might set me back, monetarily speaking, but it may be worth whatever the cost. Let me know what you think.

I know some of you can help me with this. Clutch started acting up on a ride Saturday. When I left town all was well, but as time went on, the play in the clutch lever steadily increased. It got to the point that it would disengage about 1/4" from the handgrip. Fearing it would get worse I returned home and topped off the reservoir. This morning while is was cool it seemed a little better. On the way home after work, I had almost no release left. I actually needed to blip the throttle to help it shift up or down. It's not slipping at all, just not releasing soon enough for comfort. Could it be air has gotten into the line somehow. It hasn't been dropped, but it was completely service recently. I would have expected any problems from the servicing to show up immediately though. All help is needed and appreciated. Jim

What a nice week end for a ride me and the wife took off for a long ride sat.AM got home at dusk. got up Sunday jumped on the bike and off we went .rode until PM came home time to change oil got every thing out and went at it well some one (that would be me )for got to put the oil plug back in didn't see it right off had all most 3 quarts on the grage floor :whistling:

I got some new leds from a truck stop near home. Light up my Angel's tail pretty good. Whatcha think?

My trunk has the holes to mount a trunk rack on top of the trunk but I can't seem to find one. Does anyone know where I can locate one? Thanks, Curtis Traylor Mountain Home, AR
