  1. SO I have a small SUV that my youngest son drives and it need tires...badly. I have a set that came off of a different car but they are not the same size. Vehicle specs call for P235-60-16 and these other tires (in excellent shape by the way) are P205-60-16. I visited my local tire shop and asked if there were any safety issues involved in running this car with the smaller tires. I was told that it's not lawfuil?? to do that and many garages refuse to do so because it open them up to liability. From what I can figure the smaller tires are about an inch (8.07 in vs 9.26 in) narrower and a half inch (4.04 in vs 4.62 in) shorter. He says they will mount them for me (actually dismount from other wheels and then mount on the correct wheels) for $139, and then offered his cheapest alternative new tires as $539 mounted and installed. Any expert opinions out there on the feasability of using the smaller tires? I'm sure there are cheaper tires than what I was quoted, but I really would like to use the tires I have if possible so any and all advice will be appreciated.

  3. Thanks for all the replies. Called my bank and CC co and let them know I was going foreign for a couple days. My travel plan is to enter the "Great White North" around the noon hour tomorrow and I probably will do the ferry, cheap. I looked at crossing Lake Michigan via ferry, but it takes longer and costs WAY too much. I plan on finding Hwy 3 from Marine City for the ride to the Falls. Staying at HoJo's once there, two nights total, leaving Saturday AM. Other than seeing the Falls, have no other plans at this time. Just hoping for good weather, which so far looks promising. I may look into doing a short phone plan switch with Verizon, from looking at their website they charge 89 a min for calls and looks like a quarter per text. Don't know about data charges. Ran out of time yesterday with my last minute preps to stop in at the local office, I'll have to find one on the way. I hope to be on my way in the next 1-1/2 hrours
  4. Well I probably should have researched this a little better before, but anyway----my wife and I are going on a first ever long distance trip (for her on the back of the bike anyway) to celebrate our 30th anniversary. Leaving tomorrow up around Lake Michigan heading for Niagara Fall, ON for a couple of nights. Heading through Port Huron/Sarnia on the way to a final destination of Bennington, VT. Wondering where the best place to exchange US $$ for Canadian $$ would be. US side or Canadian?? Banks/CU's?? I haven't driven through our northern neighbor's property since the 70's when the speed limit was 70 north of the border and 55 south and passport not needed. Just spending a couple of nights in Canada, so I won't need a whole lot of cash, but also wondering if there is a surcharge when using the gas pumps/purchases with credit cards? Any insight would be appreciated
  5. Best wishes for the "big guy in red" to get back on the white bike real soon!!
  6. Thanks for the birthday wishes and party, I didn't even catch a whiff that Sharon's "illness" was part of the surprise. Thanks much to Orlin and Sharon for again going out of their way to make Kathy and I feel welcome. Had a blast riding the hills and valleys again. Was great seeing old friends and meeting new ones as well. Thanks to Gary and Candy for the morning coffees and to the rum balls from Jeff (whew!!). Thanks to the big guy in red (Rick she must have meant big hearted) for helping me with my radio problem, it works great now. Looking forward to the next time we can all (or some of us or even new friends) can get together again!
  7. What happens when two vehicles meet, does uphill get the ROW?
  8. More from the article: By make and model, the NICB shows the top 5 most-stolen models are: Honda CBR600RR Yamaha R6 Suzuki G-SXR 600 Harley Davidson FLH Series Kawasaki ZX-6R Note that, of the Japanese brands, the most frequently stolen bikes are all 600cc sport bikes. According to statistics published by the National Insurance Crime Bureau, 56% of all motorcycle theft occurs in only 10 states. In order, they are: California Texas Florida North Carolina Indiana South Carolina Georgia New York Pennsylvania Maryland By city, NYC had the most motorcycle theft, followed by Las Vegas, San Diego, Indianapolis, Miami, and Los Angeles. The preferred method of motorcycle thieves nowadays is loading an unsecured bike into a minivan as fast as possible and driving away, even in broad daylight. However, low-tech methods as propping a motorcycle onto a couple of skateboards and simply rolling it away are reported!
  9. Found this in an article via email today: According to NICB statistics, the top five most stolen motorcycle brands are: Honda (20%) Yamaha (16%) Suzuki (15%) Kawasaki (11%) Harley-Davidson (8%) Occurrence of theft by manufacturer is highly correlated with each brands popularity – but a notable exception is Harley Davidson. Harley-Davidsons rank only 5th in theft rates, an only 8% share of the total, despite being the most popular brand in the U.S. Any guesses as to why Harleys ranks last?
  10. Welcome back to central Wisconsin:thumbsup2:
  11. 21 and 20 yr old local college students died on a mc as a result of someone turning in front of them just a few miles from my home on a road I frequent as a route to a fave place for a burger and brew. Both were wearing helmets. http://www.stevenspointjournal.com/article/20140422/SPJ0101/304220336/-1/7daysarchives/UWSP-mourns-students-killed-cycle-crash
  12. So I'm in the grocery store late yesterday afternoon, picking out a tomato to make BLT's. I'm standing in front of the bin checking them out when a hand reaches out in front of me and grabs the tomato I was reaching for. I couldn't believe someone would just reach out in front of me and do that, so I turned to look and here's this older lady. I just stare at her and then she says HI. I turned away and grabbed my second choice and just left her standing there. I couldn't believe how rude that was. But wait there's more. It must have been about ten minutes later I was wheeling my cart out to where I parked my bike and I see this same old lady finishing putting her groceries away in the SUV I was parked next to. I got about 25 feet away when I saw her wheel her now empty cart right next to my cycle and leave it there. I couldn't believe it. I got close enough as she was walking around the front of her SUV and I yelled to her that the cart corral was just a few feet away. She just turned and looked at me blankly. I was a little perturbed at that point and tempted to push her cart back behind her big SUV. A man walking to the store said he'd take the cart and did so, leaving me to fill my trunk with my bags, while the lady continued to look at me. Maybe I was cranky today because my wife made me do yard work instead of being able to ride my bike, but I mean really!! She looked at me as though she had no idea what the problem was. Well I finished loading and then wheeled my cart 2 stalls over to the corral. I'm sure everyone here has had this happen at one time or another where someone abandons a cart right next to their vehicle when the corral is just a stall or two away. I just couldn't believe it was in this case. And here I thought common courtesy was something everyone over 40 understood and practiced.
  13. I need knowledgeable opinions on spray paint for a car top carrier I picked up for my trailer. I see Rustoleum/Krylon/Valspar all advertise spray paint to cover plastic and I would like to know if anyone has experience spraying these types of items. Nothing fancy mind you, just something to cover the scuffed up off-white/gray of the Sears X-Cargo I picked up.
  14. So my plugs happened to weep over the winter and I ordered a set from Partshark.com ($4.15 ea w/$4.50 S&H). Are these expansion plugs that expand when they are screwed in or do I whack em with a three pound ball peen hammer? Inquiring minds want to know. Thanks!
  15. Everybody sing...Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you..... Never mind Happy birthday Dan
  16. I remember induction day in 1973, filling out the paperwork, got down to the signature line and the recruiter made a smart ass remark about how we were signing our life away at that point. So I started thinking, well maybe I'll just write some one else's name. And just like that I put thought to action and wrote a different last name. How embarrassing, he made me fill out the form over since I couldn't cross anything out. Standing in front of the mirror in boot camp watching the guy in front of me getting his grizz. Admiring my long hair curling about my shoulders, and then it was my turn and the barber made a point of it to cut it off and then drop it in my lap. Then getting yelled at by the Seabee Senior Chief company commander for having long sideburns. I didn't realize I could have asked for a shave as well (NOT!)
  17. A big MERRY CHRISTMAS to all my Venture friends and those who make this such a great site!
  18. I'm pretty sure I pulled a muscle just watching
  19. I hope it's dryer than last year!
  20. I've bought my last several pairs online at Zenni Optical. My last pair of no line progressives cost me $54.80 http://www.zennioptical.com/
  21. I was the unfortunate bad tire victim and I thank everyone at the event for sticking by me until I could get things sorted out. Thanks to Frank D for noticing the tire and Earl & his wife for sticking with me for 5 hours while I got my tire replaced (no bargain there at the Cherokee County Cycle place though). Even though I got there after every one had completed their run, Yammer Dan accompanied me on my first ever run on the Dragon, thanks Dan! The luncheon was great and the anticipation of winning prizes was secondary to real reason for the rally. I'm sure everyone felt as I did when Lewis got choked up after the presentation of the check by B2 Mom & Dad, knowing that even our small efforts will help those kids in need greatly. Thanks, Lewis for organizing this event and thanks ever so much for your dedication to helping those sick children and making a difference in the lives of others. As a parent of a child who survived a life-threatening disease I commend all involved in the event and everyone in Venturerider.org who contributes in any way in making a difference in the lives of the children and their families who need our help.
