  1. Well, the Terrorism charge is ridiculous. Just plain stupid in my opinion. If the noise is beyond what the legal limits are fine them for that. If not don't invent something to give them a ticket- a charge like terrorism could leave lasting implications down the road that the individual does not deserve. Crazy **** happenin' these days..... What comes around goes around and the last thing I want to deal with is some local law "fabricator" to invent some new law just because they don't like what I'm doing when what I'm doing is legal! Don't get me wrong, I don't like the obnoxious noise of straight pipes (& some people I know have vocal chords that could rival loud pipes- no names , High Honey! LOL) anymore than the next guy, but I'm willing to put up with it. Yeah, my neighbor (good guy) likes to rev his straight-piped Harley. Give-n-take I say. Whatever floats your boat as they say. Ridin' On.... RSTAR08
  2. James, Thanks for all your feedback, it's really going to help me pull this together with less trial and error. I've found some 83 venture 1200 trunks and some later 98/99 ones that will work and are decently priced. I noticed the earlier 1200 venture trunks are a tad smaller but I kind of like the look and they have a shape that I think will compliment the rstd bags- we'll see. I have yet to find the tour pak for less than 450. I did see one complete with rest, lights, and antennas in excellant condition. The other one I'm considering is marketed under the brand name VIP (& others) it too has brake lights, turn signals, and led wing. It's a few inches narrower (19" w.) than the tour pak but I like the lines of it. I am just not sure what the quality will be for the price. Hmmmm? Thanks, Dave
  3. All told I can't complain too much- escaped unharmed, bike as well. Just wallet damage- but I'm used to that. LOL Luckily the air escaped slowly so when the high-speed wobble kicked in I was fortunate not to be in a curve or changing lanes (with all the crazy "four wheels" flyin' around I kept to the right and did not have to cross lanes to move off road). 4. What year is the tour pack you used from? I figure 2k is better than buying a whole new bike- need some more support/comfort for the wife. Best of all is keeping the versatility of the RSTD- kinda like havin' three bikes in one! I agree about the RSV fairing- not a fan of the bulky look and headlight set up. I'm in process of tracking down some parts- oh, how much larger than the RSV trunk is the Harley trunk? Thanks, Dave
  5. Yeah, these lessons get more-n-more expensive....supposed to get wiser as we get older. LOL Had the same thought about the windshield trapping road noise. I've riddin many cruisers without 'em and I won't go back- at least not for hghway ridin'. Can't enjoy the ride when your body is acting like a sail- not to mention the inability to react to a sudden road hazard. I remember holdin' on for life fighting head-winds and crosswinds hoping I would not need to avoid a reckless maneuver or road debris, problem is when your'e young you think it's all about the image and forget about the ride. Yeah, gettin' old means you've finally made enough bone-headed mistakes to actually face the music and deal with the reality of ridin' not the fantasy. But, hey, enjoy youth while you got it it age cathes you faster than those 3 sec. crotch rockets will..... Enjoy, Ridin' On
  6. So, I just put new Pirelli 66's on the bike and three hrs into my trip I get a flat tire out back!!!?@#@%$#@???"""> Had to hang around until Monday for new tire- only had a Dunlop 402/404(? whatever) in stock. I suppose I should be glad no crash happened- 60mph & picked up metal scrap in construction zone. Later
  7. So, after runninga bit with the LA Chopper slip-ons I decided to go back to stock pipes. The highway volume became so obnoxious it rattled my eardrums out! The helmet seeemed to make the volume louder- more than I could take. Too bad 'cause I liked the rumble of these pipes at idle and throttle blip. Also, so after putting stock pipes back on and taking a small roadtrip this weekend I realized another issue (I had installed a jet kit to tune the pipes)- gas mileage went down considerably! I used to get 42-45mpg and on this 300 mile trip I only averaged 28-30mpg!!! Jet kit is coming out too. Oh well, I guess it's not such a good idea to re-engineer/mess with what's not broke. RSTAR08
  8. That looks great! I new I could not be the only one to have this idea. So, if you don;t mind me asking....what was the total $? Also, any tips in working throuh any quirks or is it as straight-forward as it looks? I've seen the trunk and backrest complete (used) on ebay for 900. - I guess that number is doubled with the extra brest and shop fees not to mention paint. Any feedback on the way it rides with this setup? Thanks, Dave
  9. After installing a set of LA Choppers Oval Bag Slash Slip on pipes I quickly discovered how much more "popping and crackling" was going on in the pipes....I decided to purchase a jet kit from Factory Pro ("drop in" requiring no slide drilling) #crb-y92-1.0. This decision was based on the majority of opinions that the RSTD's are lean from the factory. Just picked up bike today. Crackling & popping and occasional backfire upon decel. and hard throttle have been cured! Much more pleasant (IMHO) to my ears, no pops or garbled sounds on downshifts either. Occassionally when you back off throttle quickly after hard accell. there is a "pop" - but just one (grin) not the "dozens" as before and this does not happen each time. If you're curious the install was a coule hund. bucks (+100 for jet kit). Oh yeah, plus a few "hun." for pipes......Oh well, nuthin' comes cheap nowadays anyhow. These pipes are a deep throaty rumble at idle and produce a sharp mid-tone bark when snapping throttle. I like the idle a lot, throttle bark is nice too; however, the cruising volume on highway could get old on long trips.....I think I'll look into wrapping the baffles with steel wool (two brothers racing) or fiberglass packing. Anybody have an idea as to what percentage of volume reduction can be had by packing baffles? (These pipes are the same as the Baron's Oval Bag Slash Pipes) Anyway, it may not be necessary to jet this bike with stock or slip-on pipes but it sure smoothes down the exhaust note a lot! (Popping and crackling and occassiona back/afterfire accurred with stock pipes as well. Later & Advice/opinion is always welcome!
  10. I've a different take to adding a trunk to the RSTD that I was wondering if anybody has tried..... I'd like to use the removeable backrest for the attachement point and fabricate/add a Venture Royal trunk frame to that to create a one piece set-up the would mount the trunk. This way when I don't want or need the trunk I could put the standard back rest in - obviously, I'd need to purchase an extra back rest unit but It would be worth it for the ease of change over. I've seen the trunck frames on ebay for about 200 and I figured a good welding shop could fabricate/join this to the back rest frame. My only concern is if the mounts where the slide-in std. backrest fits are strong enough for the additional weight of the trunk assemby.... Any ideas or experience trying to do this? Thanks!
  11. Reshired- Yeah, it's all part of the experience I suppose. I guess that's what it's all about everyone enjoying their own experience. All- To all you guys that tuned in I decided to have the jet kit installed ("Factoy Pro", stage 1, cbr-92y-1.0). After reading about how these bikes are lean from the factory I figured rejetting the carbs would be a good thing all around. I'm curious to see how it affects performance in general. Even if I go back to stock pipes at some point it should still be an improvement over the factory tuning. I found a local shop to do the jet kit install (quoted around 200 bucks so I figured that was reasonable enough). I'll post an update on performance/results next week when it's done. Ridin' On....
  12. SilvrT- It may be a good reason to go out and get the carb sync. tool. The manuf. only recomended air/fuel adjustments but I'll have to look into the AIS option. Ace50- That's nice of you to offer, I'll try a few options and might just take you up on the offer. I noticed some slight "back popping" or occasional backfires prior to the pipe install so maybe that AIS is the first option I should try. flb_78- I'll keep you posted on how that kit comes set up (28 vs 32mm)- It was a decent price so I figured as a worse case scenario I could use it in the future if I change the exhaust system out. So, what in your opinion is the remedy for the backfiring? A carb rebuild? Thanks guys for your input, I'll keep you posted. Thanks!
  13. Hi ALL, New to the site & just gettin' my feet wet. Maybe somebody has experience or knowledge - I'm sure it's been discusssed many times.... Somebackground, I have an 08 RSTD that I bought a year ago (only 6k on it) and have since put 4k on. Love this bike's build quality & ride!! I've owned muscle bikes, dual-sports, c-rockets, standards and I've finally come around to a keeper. No problems at all except the occasional gear whine (?) Not sure I first thought it might be wind noise whistling through the fairing or something. Not a bid deal to me- unless it's an issue for down the road and I ought to have it repaired while under warranty. Any thoughts? About the pipes. I just installed a set of LA Chopper oval bagger slip-on pipes. Sound great!!! I'm getting some backfire on decel. with hard throttle- not so bad under smooth throttle. I've called some local shops & get mixed opinions- most want to install a jet kit (quoted over 600. ?!?) or do a carb air/fuel adjustment. I've even been told jet kits are not available by some shops. I researched and found a jet kit by "Factory Pro" (#CRB-y92-1.0) that is advertised as a drop-in stage 1 kit requiring no drilling of the slides. Sounds good to me....Anybody ever put one of these in or know of them? I ordered it today so I'm going to look for somebody to install. Also, installed K&N filters as well. Any advice or opinions would be great! Ridin' On:cool10: RSTAR08
