  1. I'm working on a friends bike troubleshooting a start problem. I'm into the fairing so I can OH out the thumb button. He just had a dealer install passing lights first part of the year. It sickens me to see scotch locks, and a glass fuse and some flimsy looking bullet connectors. Argh and I can only imagine what they charged him.
  2. WOW Thats exactly how my $20 e-bay horn looked after a year or so and just spray painted "chrome" So I would say about the same only $30 cheaper. kind of why I went black on the Sick Speed one. no chrome available when I bought it so I just went black and I think it blends in well.
  3. Mine were installed when I got the bike. But I have had them off dozens of times to get into the fairing. I would think it is a maybe 3-4 on a 10 scale difficulty. Biggest thing is if you are going to install the light bar you really need to install on a relay and its own source of power from battery. not thru the headlight circuit or however the dealer does it.
  4. OK I got a couple projects today but I'll shoot ya an PM.
  5. Yea tank is a breeze really. 2 bolts up front, one rear and a vent line, fuel line and a squeeze connector for the fuel gauge. Maybe 10 min I have no idea what the key switch connector looks like on the earlier TD. The RSV and later TD look kind of like a "T" Instruction sheet 2nd.pdf
  6. Red rider I think that is simply a relay with a harness. It will work but you will have to wire everything. I think Carbon ones deal is all dont except running the hot wire.
  7. Condor, Yea he added a battery tender with the new battery, but I think he changed the battery because it wouldn't start or was slow rolling over when he got back after a few weeks. . I have taken all that apart and cleaned all the connections there and on ground side. But when he drops it off I will make sure the OEM cables sit rite on the terminal and anything else added is on top of leads. My first idea goes to the thumb button, then possibly the starter relay. Which is down by the main fuse if I remember correctly right? Geeze thats a PIA to get to.
  8. Yea aint that the trick. Is xcatch it when it happens. On an intermitent problem is your never really sure you got it fixed.
  9. WOW that could be disastrous when loading or unloading it from the trailer i guess. Wonder if Skid has seen this, he recently aquired said type vehicle.
  10. I bought the entry level J&M. not great but they work. I have had to install inline mic mutes kind of things to keep the wind and background noise from driving me nuts. The swoosh driving along for 2-3hr at a time is deafening. I built a cable that allows me to use earbuds and that greatly improved the sound of the overall radio/CD and aux input stuff. It also knocks out a lot of the wind noise going by and helps hear what your rider is saying. Mic is OK. I think I have turned on the CB once in the 3yr or so I had the bike. Dont seem to have very good range. When I heard a trucker on the radio and he said what mile marker he was at it was only a couple miles up the road. I got mine off e-bay from wing stuff I think and they were in the $80 ish range at the time.
  11. I read Carbon ones write up on the SEcond Gen ignition troubles. Thru some research and some friends with the Tour Deluxe we figured out that the 05-09 Tour Deluxe and the 99 and up RSV share the same ignition switch. I had a problem with cutting into my harness at the time as it was under warranty. So I developed a plug an play by-pass relay set up. It really cleans up the operation. If you already suspect switch problems its available in a keyless option also. From some of my sources, the ignition switch on the earlier TD are totally different, aren't they?
  12. MAN are they proud of them chrome ones or what??
  13. Dacheda- When I went to look at it the first time I took one of my keyless ignition bypass setups with me and bypassed the ignition. It still wouldnt turn the starter. I kind of thought it was the ignition at first also. Neil thanks. I thought the more I read that checklist that they just wrote the thing wrong. they say harness, but you are actually checking the relay.
  14. Did you OHM out the coils?
  15. Andy I like you looked it up on their (Star) site. no listings. I even used a couple of other bikes that use the 4.5 lights, Stratoliner, and those other couple cruisers. Had a couple part numbers and checked them on the site and got a no listing. E-bay and Amazon was where I got most hits on them with the design.
  16. My question is this test is for the relay correct? NOT the connector on the bike. I have power on the R/B if key is on. So what would be the difference if inducing power to this wire from turning key on. I did it both ways and still no continuity on those wires. And the test subject runs.

  18. Last air horns of that style i bought I got off e-bay. Both have been in service now for 2yr or more and work great. Says 136db and I would believe it. They are loud. the sick speed I listed in the previous post is 118db.

    clutch

If its cable actuated, I would check to see if movement is relative to clutch handle. Make sure when you pull handle the other end is moving as far as you think it should.
  21. I thought it was the clutch switch before. So today I was working on mine to see what the readings should be and match up to the shop manual. While I had the plug pulled out of the clutch mine started fine. So I would say safely that you dont need the clutch switch to start. The rest of that junk is plugged in up under the fairing best I can guess. I looked at the side stand switch and it looks as though that harness goes up either under the left leg fairing or the main fairing. I lost it up around the front of the motor somewhere and quit. Originally when I went up to look at the bike the first time I put one of my keyless by-pass relay kits on it. Still no start so I really dont think its the ignition switch as I had that by-passed with the kit. I'm kind of leaning towards the thumb switch. I dont know why, maybe because I dont want to disassembly half the bike to troubleshoot switches that make no sense. Speaking of which. somebody look at pg 8-15 (399 in pdf) and tell me its not wrong on #4. It says to put voltage into the harness and you should get continuity at those pins. I tried, no way. First off with power off it has continuity, if you simply turn the key on you get power at the R/B wire on the connector. So I think there is something fishy. I believe it is supposed to be pinning out the relay itself.
  22. OK guys, I'm open for suggestions here. Eddie e-mailed me and said bike has been fine, right up till yesterday or so. Now bike wont crank and run. Lights and stuff comes on but no crank. Last time I cleaned all the battery connections and checked the main fuse. I think I removed and cleaned the connections on the starter relay by the main fuse also. I progressed up the chain and removed the clutch connector and plugged it back in and it started and ran fine right up til now. So thats where I had him start today was removing the clutch switch and re-plug it. Nothing, I think he said he gave it a shot of WD 40 also. He get 2 red lights on the bottom of the dash, I think they are the oil and water temp maybe. but they come on when it wont start. So a little while ago he sends a message now some 3-4 hr after we have exchanged things to look at and tells me he went out just for kicks and hit the button, waalaa it cranks. I'm kind of thinking possibly the starter button? If the ignition switch was cooked or going out you wouldn't get lights and radio etc rite?

    Horns

I originally changed out the left front horn to a Stebel. Later I installed a Sick Speed after reading a thread on here. To get a Stebel up in the left leg fairing takes a bit of patience. I didnt want to mount it in behind the fairing as some had done, I figure why put a 138db horn inside something.
  25. Not sure on these things, but cars years ago when they went to digital odometers the actual milage is stored on the ECM. What part of yours died? On another board a member is putting some kind of Dakota digital speedo in his RSV. So he has guts out of one. I'll let you know what he gets back to me.
