08 Venture - Radiator Cap
djh3 replied to BigBear's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Take the cap off and swing by your local Autozone. Have them test it. The service manual says 13.8 to 18 lbs. So a 14 to 16 lb cap will work. I think it is smaller than say a standard F150 cap. but the smaller import cars have been running the small caps for years. autozone cap 7513 from what I have found is a possible sub. About 9 buck opposed to the $25 Yamaha thinks a cap is worth. -
Yup. And I dunno if the 1st gen Venture shares components with the first couple years of Royal Stars (tour classics I think they were) or not. The 05 and later Tour Deluxe are very similar.

PGunn, no problem. Just wanted to clear up. Not saying it cant happen to them. I dont know a whole lot about them, just what a friend or two thats had them tells me their system is wired different. To much weight on the switches IE: keys will kill any switch, even your cage. So all the troll, happy face and soccer ball medallions have to go. LOL

Yea I have experienced some static in the intercom off and on. Now if I dont have the navagator with me, turn down the IC to 0 and it goes away. Mine primarily is heard when the handle bars are turned to make a left. I have been told it has to do with where the radio\intercom cables are routed. Also suposedly cleaning the connectors and adding some dielectric grease helps. I have not elmininated it, but is less than ituse to be.

We stayed there a year or so ago and used it as home base for a week. Pretty central for what we wanted to do that year.

Miles unfortunately is not the only factor. It seems manufacture date is, as you know from the Avon splitting at bead syndrome a larger issue. Once cycle tires get to an age and it seems like 3yrs rings a bell they just are not that pliable and begin to degrade. but I will say again your didnt look that way. It did look like a burnout competition subject. and with only the cords hanging out in the one spot there looks like it would have been out of balance something fierce.

Still no new Venture

Looks as though weather could play a spoiler right now. Long range forecasts as they are says rain in 40% range thru sat. But as we get closer I'll take more stock in that prediction.

Replacement Fuel Pump
djh3 replied to Donvito's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If the inlet/outlets are rite for your bike I would say your good to go. Min psi 2 max is rated @ 3psi with 15 gpm flow. $60 at autozone, so not a huge price difference between it and the Mr Gasket. Probably 1/3 the price yamaha wants for it if they could get one. -
I have had some experiences that when you get to that last bit of tread wear, it goes way faster than I think it should. Last summer going into fall I changed out the rubber on my scoot for the same reason as was mentioned. It was close to end and I sure didnt want to be in the Smokies and have it go bad or rain and loose grip. I went with Shinkos for cost, and to give them a whirl. I had run the MC II and got good mileage 17k out of them. I rode more miles then as opposed to what I thought I would put on the bike in the "3 yr" window of longevity for bike tires. How old was the tire you had problems with? It looks to be over inflated and run to death. Not saying thats what happened, just sort of what it looks like. On the car tire do you notice it feels like your going to "tip over" if you corner it. Sure looks to me like with the way the tread is made on a car tire it would angle until it gets to the edge and then either not want to lean or would go all at one time.

Riding In Hot Weather - How to Keep Cool on your Bike
djh3 replied to SilvrT's topic in Watering Hole
Our medical folks at work told us basically 2 for 1. For every 2 bottles of water 1 sports drink. another thing they told us was if you don't have to pee regularly, say a couple times or more on a day long ride, you are not hydrating enough. Sweet tea and pop is not good for the hydration, has to be water (or vitamin water) and rehydration sports drinks. although an good cold sweet tea tastes mighty fine after about 4 hours in the hot saddle. And no beer don't count either, so you cant play catch up after your parked. But you can sure have a cold one or 2. -
With the wife having use or lose vacation time we decided to go to the mountians for a week and try to beat this Fla heat. Finally decided on Franklin. We have been there before and like surounding areas. Rented a place as she has to take dog. (I dunno I just give in) I was going o put the bike in the trailer and go ride a couple days while up there. But when I got to looking at time available to ride I dont think its worth the extra time driving up with reduced speed pulling trailer vs days to ride. We are planning to raft a day, kyak another, maybe hop over to Helen for a most excellent pretzal @ the bavarian house. So really only leaves lik maybe 2 days to ride. plus didnt think of taking bike until a day or so ago and have not pretrip checked trailer. We will leave 6/ 11 and hope to get there that night. Come home the 16th Might be able to work out a lunch or dinner if anybody happins to be up and around that area, depending on what we have scheduled for the day. Pretty sure going rafting on Sun as it has cheaper rates.

Look again, OP is talking 87 era bike. So wired way different than 2nd gens. I have only had like 2 guys with the early stars tell me of bad switches. The ones located down by thier leg I guess. One I figured the problem out pretty quick, to many keys hanging off key ring. He had 3 car keys, shed key and 2 house key on the ring for the bike. Weight kills these little locks.

Fuel Pump Points
djh3 replied to Donvito's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yup would have to say its 50-50 @ best. Lot of factors, like type of metal the points are made out of as to weather they will "take" to stay adjusted. Or if it might just wealen the metal and then they move on thier own. Shoot if the orginal lasted this long and is going out, you got a new pump comming. I think you will probably be good for ahile. Now the second gens being problematic with pumps. Thats why when I thought mine was giving me problems @ 30k something I went solid state and figure how to get around mounting etc. -

You know your right. Maybe we should put him in his own "special" building with folks there to watch him so nobody can take him for thier own. -

Probably needle nose pliers are only way to adjut the points in any way. -
I have to agree. I think your good to go with it the way it cracked.

The new "weather wicker" type shirts are great. Got some drawers like that material also. We bought some of the long sleve shirts in a florecent green in the sports wear section a couple years back during fall. You can add water to it if you want along the way, plus it keeps sun off your arms too. -
Well...... I would just print them up however much they want.
-
I ran mine @ 40 both ends. Well maybe 39 front. Thats what Michlen recomended when I contacted them.

Fuel Pump Points

Not completly sure, but I think the pump control relay has a timer of sorts built into it so it just dont run and run and let the pump eventualy overheat. -
testing ignition switch

Check with Joe at cycle terminals. Check this page/pic out and see if you think this is it. To me I think it is. I came home from a 3500 mile trip and the next day in wouldn't start. Had same sort of problem you are having. Main fuse was so corroded I had to replace and I used some baking soda and vinegar to clean terminals. Mine broke apart also and I put it back together and have it held on with zip ties.
