  2. Hey Squidley, look what I found:
  3. 1980 Vetter Mystery Ship Turbo (Kawasaki KZ1000) http://raresportbikesforsale.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/vetter-right-600x450.jpg Craig Vetter (yes, that Vetter) wanted to produce his version of a racing motorcycle. The Mystery Ship was the result. 200 were planned but 0nly 10 were built due to Vetter being involved in a hang gliding accident.
  4. Yes, to undercutting the engagement dogs, IF the dogs are not rounded too much. As Goose says, though, the worn thrust washer is the cause of popping out of second. The worn thrush washer allows the second gear to move laterally away from its mate, until the engagement dogs can't get a grip. Each time that happens the dog wears off the corner some more. So, you MAY be able to reuse the second gear, depending on the amount of wear on the dogs. Undercutting will help, but it is not what is needed to FIX the problem. The shift fork sometimes gets bent when second gear pops out, especially if the rider is using the gear shift lever to try and hold the second gear in engagement. Some folks have straightened a slightly bent shift fork, but there are no guarantees.
  5. Might be tough to find, since the engine and chassis are mostly hidden. I'm sure with sufficient 'therapeutic' searching, you can do it.
  6. 1894 Hildebrand & Wolfmuller Reproduction "The first ever self-powered two-wheeled vehicle that reached series production is the Hildebrand & Wolfmuller in 1894. One ‘barn find’ example has recently been sold at a Bonhams auction at The International Classic MotorCycle Show to a private collector in Germany for an above-estimate £86,200. The vehicle, the first to which the name ‘motorcycle’ (motorrad in German) was ever applied, had been in the ownership of the vendor’s family http://s1.cdn.autoevolution.com/images/news/first-series-production-motorcycle-sold-for-86-200-19859_2.jpg http://s1.cdn.autoevolution.com/images/news/first-series-production-motorcycle-sold-for-86-200-19859_1.jpg
  7. Actually, it is a 1965 Ducati Mach1, thus my reference "it is not a Kawasaki" http://www.philaphoto.com/imageLibrary/albums/userpics/10001/PA-2010Trip250m1-002.jpg
  8. An old red one. And no, it is not a Kawasaki.

  10. Don't worry about trying to guess this bike. It was so eye catching, that I had to post it up for a 'Good Morning laugh out loud'. http://www.evilmilk.com/galleries/cool-bikes/cool-motorcycles-2.jpghttp://www.sportbikes.net/forums/attachments/general-sportbikes/193800d1252340220-sportbike-riders-getting-laid-women-pickup600xi8ya2-u.jpg

  13. Yep, I'll agree. There is no substitute for the First Gen Venture. I've looked at all the 'tourers' out there and with the exception of the GL1500 or GL1800 there is nothing that offers the power, handling, pillion comfort, load capacity, weather protection, audio performance with passenger/rider intercom sophistication, 'two-up touring capability' etc., etc. all in one motorcycle. Sure, some have some things that are better than the Venture, but then those same bikes fall short in some other important area. I am with Pete on this: find another low mileage First Gen and ride it 'til either it or you die. When I picked up my '91 last fall, I realized that it was gonna be the last 'two-up' touring motorcycle I will probably be buying. After all, barring an accident (again), the bike is good for 100,000 plus miles yet. And at my current rate of annual mileage, that 100,000 miles ain't gonna happen in MY lifetime.
  14. Ben, I have two 1983 Service Manuals. One is an original Yamaha Genuine SM that I picked up eBay for FIVE dollars! That one is not for sale. But, if you keep an eye out for the Manual on eBay, you too can score! The other manual I have is a photocopied version of the Genuine Service Manual in a three ring binder. If that would suffice, I'll send it to you for the cost of postage. Here are two Yamaha Service Manuals on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-Yamaha-Owners-Service-Repair-Manual-Venture-XVZ-1200-1200TDK-1200TK-XVZ1200-/351003357442?pt=Motors_Manuals_Literature&hash=item51b96e3102&vxp=mtr http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-FACTORY-83-85-Yamaha-XVZ1200-XVZ-1200-Service-Shop-Repair-Manual/321233756199?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222008%26algo%3DSIC.MOTORS%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D22405%26meid%3D6508261152801326137%26pid%3D100005%26prg%3D8888%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D351003357442&rt=nc
  15. Doug, I experienced the same sudden surge on my '83. The bike had been sitting for awhile when I got it and apparently the carbs were a bit dirty. Anyway, it would idle (finally) and accelerate seemingly OK, when suddenly, it would "just take off" like a striped ass ape. The idle circuit of the carbs was not optimum, and I compensated with idle speed and pilot jet settings to get it to idle and pull from a stop without hesitation, but then VOOM, it'd take off like the SAPE. Finally after multiple 'shotgun' cleanings and a few tanks of Seafoamed gas, the idle was getting faster and smoother and I would slow the idle and tweak the pilot screws, etc. until it became a smooth strong acceleration throughout the range. It, like all MKI Ventures likes the higher RPM and will pull stronger as the RPMs climb, but the sudden surge was remedied when the idle circuit was cleaned up.
