    I added 7 ounces to my 95 RSTD. Rode about ten miles and noticed a some difference in both the intensity of the whine and the shifting. So far so good. Looking forward to a longer ride to see if there is further improvement.

    No, I don't shift into fifth at 31 mph, but I do tend to follow safety recommendations and those with the word "maximum". I am sure the bike can handle the added weight power-wise, but stopping and emergency handling not so sure. Pay your money, take your chances.

    No. According to the owner's manual 443 lbs is the maximum load limit.

    If I can stand the whine is it safe to not do anything about it? In other words, does the whine eventually lead to some catastrophic failure or is it simply irritating?

    An even less expensive solution: ear plugs.
