  1. Well HOWDY Gnester!! You will be glad you dropped in, there's a lot of nice people here and a ton and a half of information as well!! the '86 was the first year of the "improved" first generation Venture hence it is referred to as a 1st gen MK2 (mark 2) with better braking, bigger motor, bigger luggage space and a few other minor improvements. Just about any technical information can be found in the technical forums including a downloadable factory service manual. Your main issue will probably be carbs which can and will be challenging and expensive to PROPERLY rebuild. There is a DVD out there on rebuilding the carbs geared for VMax but the carbs are the same, just different jets. The ignition module is also a source of problems but there is an aftermarket module available from member Dingy made by Ignitech. As far as plastic goes, Ebay is our friend, there is a lot of stuff out there, both god and bad. Finding your particular color is just a waiting game. You will also become a master of plastics repair around here as well! Wait until you get it running correctly, you will have an ear to ear permanent grin pasted on your face! Bring it to one of many Meet & Eat's we put on! In June there is a big event at the site founder's place in Oberlin Ohio called Maintenance Day where we all get together, socialize and work on bikes! Later on in the summer there is a regional M&E north of Toronto Ontario, this is a first time event. Also the week before Maintenance Day there is Marcarl's Spring Fling in Bradford Ontario. In August there is a M&E in Asheville NC which is a fun time! Late in August there is a North East Regional Rally south of Buffalo NY that is growing in popularity and even has a live band perform on Saturday evening! In September there is our annual International Rally this year in West Virginia. There are other meets and Rallys thru out the year but for your location these are the closer ones. You are going to discover that the Venture is one of the finest Touring bikes ever made! The 1st generation Ventures ('83 - '93) are powerful and well handling bikes that you can get on and cruise for hours on end! Onde again welcome aboard and we are all looking forward to meeting up with you in person in the future!!
  2. Wait! Errrr, never mind!
  3. While running, the 12 volts is going to be pulsing on and off, not constant. Depending on the response time of your voltmeter you will only see at best an average of the pulses level. The signal is best and properly seen with an oscilloscope, not a voltmeter...
  4. Glad you guys had a good time and made it back safely!!
  5. You can always give up your citizenship and become an illegal alien, everything is free then...

  10. OK what I'm about to lay out is nothing new to the old timers here but it expresses the true spirit of what Venturerider dot org is REALLY about! I've been a member here since before the great crash of 2006, but not an original member. I think I joined in Feb of 2005 but it could have been 2006, not sure. In this time I have really experienced what is meant as "Family" around here!! People have come and gone but the true spirit of Ventureriders has remained and hopefully will continue for a long time! Here are a few examples... OK so you have this doohickey laying around for a Venture, maybe you got it for a real bargain, maybe not. You picked it up thinking someday it may come in handy but you never used it. Lo and Behold, you read a post by some member who for some reason has a need for it. So, normally a person would think Great, here's a chance to make some money and unload the piece, but what happens around here?? Magically the part is shipped for free to that person along with complete instructions on how to install it and an offer to help out if possible!!! You are travelling far from home and you break down! You post it on site, and within hours (or less) not only is there someone there to help, but they offer you a place to stay, and/or they have the part, and they install it for you while you rest and recover from your terrible experience! Something happens major to your bike. You crash it or it dies of old age. You get invited to a Meet and Eat and you may even get to go all expenses paid!! While there you are presented with a completely restored bike just like your old one free with no strings attached! Do these examples sound far fetched?? It really doesn't happen in real life?? Guess again!!! I have seen ALL of these scenarios happen MORE than once and that's only what I know of!!! I am also aware of several instances where a member has been down and out and the outpouring of money and other assistance has been overwhelming! The love and brotherhood of this website has been downright AMAZING!!! So does that mean we all have to be Superheros to be a member here?? Not hardly! It just takes one act of kindness here and there to make this magic happen! If every member did just one simple special thing in there entire tenure here what a spectacular place this would be, even better than it already is!! Even without all of this extraordinary actions this website is still filled with a bunch of great people who are just plain nice friendly people ready and willing to share our mutual love of motorcycle riding, and of the Yamaha Venture...

  20. The tire industry itself recommends not using a tire over 6 years old on any vehicle, including cars, due to the decomposition of the tire material. Older tires have been known to come apart and cause death...
