  1. Transistor Controlled Ignition (TCI) is what Yamaha calls it, I think...
  2. Another possibility is you have a vacuum leak somewhere... Also, when is the last time the carburetors were "sync'ed?"
  3. OK how did you clean carbs?? They are a pretty complex part with different "circuits" depending on conditions. You may have a defective Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). I'm not real familiar with the early Stars but I think they used as TPS on the pre "Venture" Stars... You troubleshoot the TPS with an ohmeter across the connector pins without the bike running. As you twist the throttle, the resistance should change linerally and smoothly, not erratically.
  4. Gray Ghost may be right, and it is a 27mm!! Sorry, I haven't had to torque the rear axle since I converted to trike in '11...
  5. Well, electrical timing is not adjustable, it is an internal part of the TCI. When cold, start the bike and CAREFULLY feel all 4 exhaust pipes for heating up, this will help determine if it is firing on all 4 or not, and WHICH cylinder to troubleshoot...
  6. LOL!! Borrow one! Just curious, it may help to analyze the symptoms! You could also try plugging in an MP3 player into the AUX jack, but make sure the volume is not ALL the way up on the player, or you will overdrive the input into distortion. I'm trying to analyze if the problem is in the radio part, or the amplifier part. As was suggested, reseating the connectors MAY or MAY NOT be the answer! The Push To Talk button for the CB could be stuck, all 4 speakers could be shot, (possibility but not likely all 4) the amplifier could be bad, etc. Have you tried with Headphones, and have you tried the intercom yet??
  7. Congratulations John!! Hope we can see it in person at the Western New York Regional Rally this August (hint hint)!!!
  8. If you play a cassette is it loud, or roughly the same volume as the radio??
  9. If you go to "Private Messages" on the Left side at the top you should see a box "My Messages." You will see folder icons for "Inbox" and "Sent Messages." Click the "Sent Messages" and if your PM was sent it should show up there...
  10. Sooo, you were out riding a Muck, eh?? Who makes the Muck??
  11. Glad you have possession of your property again Dennis!! Good luck ironing out your problems, just take them one at a time. See you at the Ontario Rallye!!
  12. Yes, I suppose it is a little frightening to work on something that works but is invisible! You can't see the little electrons moving down the wires or through the circuitry, but you CAN see the wires and where they connect. If you study HOW the system works then you can possibly figure out what isn't working too! We can help out there, some of us here, like me, spent their working career in Electronics and/or are knowledgeable of how our bike's electrical system works. You can DO it!!!!!
  13. How is Paul?? He hardly ever posts here any more...
  14. Hmmmm, been a while!! I sort of remember it being 29mm but don't quote me. The 1 1/16 will work but it is a loose fit. If you decide to buy the metric socket, do yourself a favor and spend just a little more than the single socket and buy a set, then you will have other sizes if and when the need arises...
  15. Yup!! I concur with all of the above!! Sounds like the TCI took a dump, especially with the dead tach. As was stated, the tach drive signal comes from the primary side of the #2 coil, so obviously the pulses are not getting to the coil. There may be water caught inside the TCI, or one or more of the diodes that are weak to begin with went south, or ??? Yes, the connectors may have corrosion on them, but my money is on the TCI. Just make sure the TCI your friend has is compatible with your '84. One from an '83 WILL NOT WORK RIGHT! '84 thru '89 will work!! '90 up WILL NOT WORK PERIOD!
  16. Yes, we have been following this story for the last couple of days, it has been on the news. Our prayers go out to all affected by this!
  17. ...or your wife saying she has too much jewelry, or shoes!
  18. Actually, if you want them to really shine, instead of tin foil, paint the reflectors white!! Old old biker trick to get the tail light to really light up. Reflects more light than silver...
  19. Outstanding!! Now get out and ride and meet some fellow Ventureriders one on one or at any M&E! You WILL enjoy hours upon hours of riding satisfaction! The B&B is one of my favorite color combinations!!
  20. Hmmmm, sounds like everything I did to MY '84! I used forks from a late model MK2 with the little springs at the bottom along with the regular springs. Unfortunately due to the electrical fire in the wiring harness in '09 didn't have a chance to ride it much at all. A looooong time ago, possibly even before the great crash of '06 there was a member from Toronto that did an intensive study with different weights and volume. From what I remember the more the oil the stiffer the suspension. I think he tried with all the way into the low 400's for volume. Also, as expected, the heavier (thicker) the oil, the stiffer as well. I think he tried from 5 to 20... I guess the only way for you to find out is experiment!
  21. Yah!! Once a post whore, always a post whore...
  22. Well, I suppose it's better than being a new old member... Welcome back!
  23. Actually, looking at the picture, I wonder if just risers and turning the handlebars upwards won't do what the picture says you want...
  24. Well, one way to find out is go to the user's page and look at all his posts. Can't say I can remember seeing some 38 posts a day from anyone here...
