  1. If I can offer one piece of advice.....get your engine running the way you want it before you spend tons of time and money making it look cool! Nothing worse (IMHO) than spending countless hours making it look cool, just to be left with a sputtering, chugging, hard starting, power plant. As others have pointed out these engines don't run better when you "let them breathe". Those countless Japanese engineers knew what they were doing when they designed the airbox/filter and the exhaust collector. These engines are fast, powerful and dependable in stock form....I'm not trying to be "purist" here, and I'm all for making your bike, YOUR BIKE....just keep in mind the pitfalls of changing the intake and exhaust. Just my two cents... As you were.
  2. When I bought my '84 XVZ12 it had no title and I was just going to tear it down and part it out ( heck the TCI and carbs would net me three times what I paid for the bike), but once I got the bike home and got it started, I couldn't destroy such a fine machine....I was able to track down the last registered owner and convince him I was legit...gave him the vin # and he went to the DMV and submitted for a lost title, signed it, and sent it to me so I could get it titled in my name....my problem with that was, he could have easily just called the cops and claimed the bike (fortunately he wasn't that sort of guy....but they do exsist!). So, that's one way to get it done.... I get this magazine (absolutely the best, albeit expensive, motorcycle mag you can get...it's targeted for guys just like us!), and I ran across this article, and I know a couple times a year this subject comes up and just thought it would be nice to have a well researched, definitive, go-to article for anyone who needs to title an unregistered bike. Yeah, I'm sure every state has a different protocol, here in Wisconsin it's impossible to register a bike without proper documentation.....so this is an easy way to get it done.
  3. ^^^^^^^What he said. Do it once and do it right, you might think you saved some$$$ with cheap/knockoff parts, but when you find yourself doing the job all over....you'll kick yourself.
  4. Meh! They're just a money grab! I'm usually not interested unless I have a dog in the fight.
  5. So, I've notice an oil leak from my antidives. I had done a complete rebuild of my forks and brakes last winter...I'm guessing I must have just used any old metric o-rings I had laying around or maybe I just reused the old o-rings...I just don't remember....funny thing was, there was no leaks all season long (I park my bike in the same spot in my garage), but as soon as the cold weather came...BOOM...oil spot! So, my question is....DO I NEED TO BLEED MY BRAKES IF I REPLACE THE O-RINGS? I know I'll be replacing the fork oil...with a 12wt this time! Thanks in advance.
  6. Going to do a clutch rebuild over the winter and I'm trying decide between stock Yamaha friction plates, EBC plates, or Barnett plates....whoever I get the friction plates from, that's who I'll get the steels from as well (someone correct me....there shouldn't be too much difference between the steels?). I'll also need some help on which brand of springs are preferred and why. Just as an FYI, I don't ride like a madman (occasionally I'll get "on it") and the majority of my riding is back-roads and highways....one up, no trailer. I'm assuming I still have the stock clutch from Yamaha and I like the way it feels....my issue is, if I get on it....right around redline in 4th gear it'll "judder" just a bit....not horrible, but you can feel it. Absolutely no issue if I'm riding like an adult. So help me out...give your opinion Stock Yamaha - EBC - or Barnett - or what about a mix and match? Barnett friction, EBC steels, and stock Yamaha spring? One last thing...I did a complete hydraulic rebuild last winter (Master - Stainless Hoses - and Slave) '84 XVZ12 Venture Royale
  7. I'm having the same issue.....I rebuilt the entire front end last winter....funny thing is, all year long I had no leaks...now my forks are leaking. BTW, I'm pretty sure I'm leaking fork oil.
  8. Just paid my dues for another year....best $12 I've spent on my scoot. Thanks to all those who've contributed, past and present, it's only through the collective knowledge and mistakes we've all made, that we keep these great bike rolling! My hat is off to you Ladies and Gentlemen.....thank you.
  9. I concur with Van Avery....your car battery will give you plenty of cranking power......buy please do NOT start the car or have it running during the jump!
  10. Sorry for the delay, try brake hoses unlimited, his name is Nick Chrisman his email is goodbrakes@brakehoses.biz , he's a good guy and should still have the template from my '84
  11. I found a guy in Michigan that made me a complete set of stainless lines....and the price was very reasonable. I will try to find his contact info......I have been very satisfied.
  12. I'll have to admit....I have no idea what valve cover Ds are? I know what the valve covers are, I know what the valve cover gaskets are, I know what the valve cover bolts are, and I can only assume we're talking about the rubber hold down washers? I've heard them called donuts and pressure washers, but not Ds....is this what we're talking about?
  13. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?116337-Clutch-Hydraulic-Rebuild-Tutorial I rebuilt my entire hydraulic system....it's not that difficult. I'll even loan you the master cylinder snap ring pliers!
  14. It is my understanding that Yamaha used that screw for a temp sensor on some previous models....it's just a holdover.
  15. I did a complete front end rebuild over the winter, and it's like night and day....Do it once and do right, as long as you're in there....what's another $100? I'd hate to do all that work only to find the slides/Pistons are sloppy. I say change it all out...it worked for me.
  16. Hey Brother....if the rain holds out and the creek don't rise, I should be heading out around 2:00 ish...are we still on?
  17. Meh.....not going to impact me. I'll adjust.
  18. I have one exactly like Camos's...traded another member for it. Funny thing is mine has the word superbrace punched into it???
  19. I got my rebuild kit on eBay, although it was quite expensive (I seem to remember around $60). My master looked like it was full of chicken fat and my brakes were almost nonexistent, but it cleaned up really nice. I also rebuilt both my calipers and added stainless hoses and HH pads...like night and day difference.
  20. not dumb at all.....just the people (of which I am not one) with the smarts to answer have not seen this post....hang in there
  21. I believe it needs to be usb to a serial connector. You should be able to find one at newegg or any computer hardware store (probably not at a Best Buy store, although they could order it)
  22. Yeah....I saw that bike a couple of weeks ago....he has done all the work I would have! Trouble is, he's asking top dollar....we all know how much work goes into getting a bike set up like that, so I can see where his head is at but I'd be reluctant to offer any more than $2200....but I'm a cheap skate.
  23. Check for a vacuum leak.....carb probably needs a cleaning, but I'd bet dollars to donuts you have a serious vacuum leak
