  1. What constitutes a 2nd. Gen starter...Is it a starter from a 1300cc bike or is it a starter from a 1999 and beyond? I guess my simplier question could have been what constitutes a 2nd Gen bike? Newbs gotta ask newb questions....
  2. Patmac is just a contraction of my first and last name, 6075 was my MOS while in The Marine Corps. 6075 = Cryogenic Technician.
  3. 1984 Royale JYA41V001EA001134 New Ruby Red/Romanesque Crimson about 8K mi. (bike is currently stored, can send build date in Spring). Will send you a pm....would appreciate a copy of the list. Bike isn't running, but I'm told it could have the 2nd gear issue.
  4. I doubt you'll have any trouble if you wait, but me...personally...I'd try to get it fixed a.s.a.p. Your bike is telling you there is a problem, maybe when you start riding again next year there is no leak...great right? But if your luck is anything like mine, at the worst time possible, that tiny leak could become a full on blow-out...you catch my drift? For my money....fix it now, there's bound to be a couple of nice days between now and next riding season, besides, wouldn't you rather be riding on that nice afternoon? That's what I would do...
  5. Well, dealing with numerous "No Start" issues and while I was replacing spark plugs, I decided to take a look inside the caps. Well, as I unscrewed #1, there was only the screw and a white rod (which I assume is the resistor)...cleaned it with electrical cleaner and a paper towel and moved to #3....low and behold, a spring and a disc are ALSO in #3 (I was very careful to be on the look out for small parts when disassembling so I'm sure somebody else has been inside #1). My questions :#1 What is the order...disc-spring-rod-screw? #2 Does anyone know the NGK replacement number? Looks like they are only around $5 ea. at Dennis Kirk(if that's the case, I'll just replace all 4), and lastly, where would you buy replacements? Thank you in advance Pat
  6. Well.....this is how I got to the TCI, Basically removed all of the right side fairing...got to it pretty easy. Now comes the hard part...putting it all back together...in six months!
  7. Want to remove my TCI to relocate it....got the air box out, and the battery box...where are the screws holding the TCI at? Thanks. Pat
  8. Thanks for the input... WELL! I pulled the hose off the inlet side of the fuel pump and flipped the petcock to RES and emptied the tank....got about 2 1/2 Gallons, mostly a yellowish color... But once I notice these little hoses (2) centered in between the carbs, kinda figured they might be float bowl drains...took an educated guess and undid a nearby screw....Viola! Look at what came out....GREEN! Green gas!I kid you not! it was green....smelled slightly like turpentine. What's up with that?! Oh yeah, #2 float chamber was empty. http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz131/Patmac6075/1agas.png
  9. Can someone explain the easiest/most simple method of draining old gas from both the tank and the carb bowls? Would like to get rid of the old junk in there....flush with SeaFoam and refill with clean gas. Thank you in advance Pat 1984 XVZ12DL-R
  10. Thanks for the input, Well, I learned some things...#1 these plugs are a pain! I wasn't able to get the compression test complete because the auto parts loaner compression gauge didn't have a fitting to fit my bike (Venture - 2 Me -0)! Was able to get all my plastics off and secured (except the main portion of the fairing which, I'll leave on the bike)...Will pick up a compression gauge later this week....anybody know the correct fitting needed? Will begin reading up on carb removal as a rebuild will be my winter project....any help with good threads/tutorials would be appreciated.
  11. UHT-OH! Total newbie here, but...what size is the sparkplug? Tried all my plug sockets to no avail...man that's tight in there too...suggestions before I go freestyle...What combination plug socket/extension/universal joint/ratchet do you suggest?
  12. Sorry for the multiple posts, but since this is a completely different question, figured I'd start a new thread....New Guys!!!!? So, when I go to turn my bike over (1984 XVZ12DL-R)...I turn ignition switch to ON (bike in neutral), I hear a mechanical clicking for about 20 seconds or so, and when I look under bike there is a new puddle of gasoline. So, I'm figuring the "clicking" sound is the fuel pump and it's disconnected somewhere...question is, is this a common problem? And where should I begin looking? Or, is it just a matter of, "follow that leak"? Thanks in advance Pat
  13. Where is the TCI on my 1984 XVZ12DL-R, so I can unplug it (TCI needs to be unplugged during compression test...right?)? What are the compression values (what is spec) on a cold engine? No use debating hot vs cold engine compression test in my case as the engine does not start at this time so point is mute. Will post wet and dry numbers later today....thanks Pat
  14. Thanks for the quick reply....so there are no instruction for taking the plastic parts off these bikes? Any words of wisdom for getting the front fairing off?
  15. have some new questions 1. Is there a tutorial on taking the "plastics" off? Want to strip everything down to just the hard parts, to gain better acces. 2. How do you remove the seat? I downloaded the FSM but it doesn't show this simple procedure? 3. Is there a fuel petcock? Thanks in advance
  16. I'm familiar with the 2nd gear bug...I have no interest in splitting the case, if the runs and ride well....I'd learn to live with first to third shifts..
  17. Ok, so I took delivery today....here she is, the newest member of my stable: http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz131/Patmac6075/Venture1014002.jpg http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz131/Patmac6075/Venture1014001.jpg http://s821.photobucket.com/user/Patmac6075/media/Venture1014006.jpg.html I do have one question....should anything be plugged in here? http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz131/Patmac6075/0c79e913-223b-4cdb-8eeb-13070dd8b7ca.jpg
  18. Hello to all from Wisconsin, Brand new to this site, but not to Yamaha's (have resurrected two XJ's within the past couple of years) Looking for some help navigating this site. Have been a member over at XJBikes.com for quite some time and have gained much knowledge...one thing I've learned, is that there are usually a handful of members who's advice is always spot on, these are the guys who's post you make sure you listen to...with my apology's to anyone who doesn't make "the list"....Who are the site's maintenance Guru's? Where do you guys go for parts? Where is the best place to pick up a Factory Service Manual? Should be taking ownership later today on a "new to me" 1984 XVZ12DL-R...figured this out using a VIN decoder (JYA41V001EZxxxxxx)...as it sits, it has 8500 miles on it (yes 8500!) has no title and hasn't run in who know how many years...bike looks to have been stored indoors most of it's life with good paint and little to no rust or oxidation. Job #1 (at least IMHO) is to get compression numbers (what are acceptable #'s?)....if these check out I'll start on a complete recommission...all new fluids, filters, plugs, seals, valve clearance, carb rebuild & sync, tires, brakes....the full McGilla. Unless something goes horribly wrong...hopefully you'll be hearing from me a lot...bear with my newbie questions (especially the one that have been asked and answered a million times)...thanks! Pat
