    Sad News

Just a couple hours north from here. Those photos tell it all. Sad and prayers to the families involved. Each time I see incidents like this, it is a reminder that we are all simply a mistake away.
  2. On my '07 VStar, I used 8mm bolts, covered with hi-temp RTV silicone and then capped it off with aluminum from a tin can and a clamp. Has lasted for over 20k miles. Just got a '99 RSV a couple weeks ago that the prior owner capped. I need to inspect and see what he used. Looks like you now have a permanent fix on yours!
  3. Thanks Larry, I will check it out. Larry
  4. Need to replace them on my '99 as well. I've been looking online and trying to find some that does not require the use of a relay and will fit in that tiny spot behind the front left fairing. I have considered just replacing the current 2 horns with an air horn but just can't find a good place to mount one toward the front,............... unless someone has successfully mounted the Stebel behind the fairing???
  5. I have been with Progressive the past several years and they have steadily gone up every year. When I bought the '99 RSV a few weeks back, I checked back with USAA. I got mine thru USAA via interface to Progressive at a lesser price than from Progressive direct. Not much less, but less.
  6. I am a wheel watcher as well, and I always assume the car is going to pull out and I always assume that oncoming left hand turner is going to cut into my path and prepare myself to have to make an abrupt stop. I have a few additional safety points: 1) Take nothing for granite. 2) Drive the posted speed limits, they (except for the speed trap small towns) are set for a reason. 3) Always be aware of your surroundings, including the cars in your rear view. If a car passes you, even on the interstate, that you never saw in your rear view, let that be a warning. 4) When you do have to stop quickly for whatever reason, try to pump your brake a couple times to flash your brake lights to that following vehicle. 5) When following other vehicles, use the 2 second rule, or better yet, 3 second rule. Check yourself often that you are following this rule. 6) When entering a busy highway or crossing that intersection, if you have a second thought about taking off, then don't. That second thought just may save your life. 7) I keep my headlight on bright, unless it is dark and someone flashes requesting me to dim. 8) And my final rule, there is no such thing as being too safe. I have many more that I try to share with younger lesser experienced drivers, but those are my main ones.
  7. Sea foam has cured a few of my engines in the past, especially weed whackers and those pesky carb problems they have frequently. Just a spoonful or two in your weed whacker every so often works wonders. If you have to choke it to get it to run right, give Sea Foam a try. I blame ethanol for most of the problems.
  8. Rain predicted for here starting tomorrow afternoon. My rule of thumb when heading out to work is, if it aint raining and above 40 degrees, then ride. Just washed mine this past weekend and really do hate to dirty her up especially since it looks like I may be helping escort a bike ride Sunday afternoon. But that's life!
  9. I just picked up my '99 RSV a week ago today. And I can cruise comfortably at 85 mph. My first time to hit the interstate, on my way home from picking it up, I didn't even put it in 5th til I hit 80. Very please so far with my RSV!
  10. Glad you are ok and hope you have no recurring issues from this.
  11. I may have misunderstood the thread, dunno. The RSV was obviously not my first ride. I have no pics of it, but it was a 1971 CB250 that I purchased for $300 while in the USCG in 1976 on the west coast. And back then, 350cc was plenty big enough. Put a lot of miles up and down PCH.
  12. Opening was horizontal, so I don't think so, but I guess it could have happened. I just noticed today that it has little volume so I turned it pointing down, checked the connections, tapped on it a bit, etc. Maybe a good excuse to mount an air horn somewhere.
  13. Picked her up last Wednesday night with 25k miles on it and have put a little over 300 miles on her since then. Loving it so far other than for some reason my horn has gone down to about 25% of it's original volume. The bike was dirty when I got it, so I took pressure washer to it Saturday, trying to be careful, but I may have messed up my horn. Also would like to mount my Kuryakyn ISO pegs off of my VStar, but the engine guards are only 1" and look weak. Kuryakyn wants arm and leg for the 1" clamps. http://objectechsolutions.com/images/IMG_20140506_090135_005.jpg
  14. I like the badges myself, and about any other piece of chrome that can be added. As a note, picked up the 3M tape, cut it to size where it would not be right on the edges and applied it to the 'clean' tank that had been sitting in the 85 degree sun for a few hours. Seems to be on there pretty tight and close fit. Time will tell. Thanks to all that replied!!!
  15. Will pick some up tomorrow. Thanks!
  16. You will like it. Mine has a clear lens with LED light that is very bright, plus it looks cool.
  17. I used to ride a CF Moto 250 to/from work a few years ago. Kept running logs of all fuel purchases on my android. After 9500 miles, before I sold it, the average mpg for the entire odometer was just over 73 mpg.
  18. Trip odometer is at 119 miles and gauge is at 1/2 tank. Mixed driving with what interstate driving I did (roughly 20 miles or so) at 85 mph. Seems to be doing ok. Will know more in a few days.
  19. from the guy whom I purchased my bike this past Wednesday. He had removed them and luckily, came across them Friday and gave me a call. Saved me some bucks there. Long story short, since these were removed, I have to clean the original tape or whatever it is off of the back of the emblems and then apply some new tape or whatever it is. My question: What is the whatever it is? Tape? Can it be purchased at an auto parts store, whatever it is? Thanks in advance. Loving the RSV. Just need more time to get out and RIDE (other than my trips to/from work).
  20. SWEET! I like that better than the badges. But my 6 year old grand daughter has more artistic values than me. I am a huge Auburn University fan and was opting to go with the big chrome AU and smaller chrome letters to spell Tigers prior to the phone call today. Swap tanks with you.
  21. Just bought me a '99 RSV identical to the on in the upper left of your photo. Picked it up Wednesday night. Has 25k miles. Drieven it 150+ miles so far and loving it. Glided along at 85mph on interstate this morning listening to talk radio. Heaven!
  22. Fixing to have to buy a battery for my '07 VStar 650 before I sell it and I guess I need to stay away from Odyssey? The factory battery has been a good one. Bike has 39k miles and still has the original battery. It will crank the bike, but drags when engine is cold.
  23. JACKPOT!!! The guy I purchased the bike from called me during lunch today and he just happened to come across the tank badges while rumbling thru a storage shed this morning. He is dropping them in the mail tomorrow. Also had the opportunity to talk to him a little more about the bike now that I have ridden it for 150 miles or so. It seems to have a small harmonic vibration in 4th gear at the 50-55 mph range. Not bad, but noticeable both audible and feel but goes away after accelerating to a higher speed or going up to 5th gear in that speed range. He said he never noticed it. Of course not. But just wondering if others may have experienced that. Supposedly the valves were adjusted at 23k miles, but I don't think that would cause the vibration.
  24. After further checking eBay, seems it would be cheaper to purchase a slightly damaged tank and rob them from it, then maybe resale the tank dirt cheap. Thanks for the info.
  25. Yeah, I should have known that. Same rules apply to other forums of which I am a member. Will put some on here this weekend after I get her washed and waxed.
