  1. I'm getting nervous because of the amount of force I'm having to use to get the water pump off so I thought I should stop and ask someone.. I've taken 5 bolts out of the cover I've taken 4 remaining bolts out of the housing.. Does the housing just pry off now?? And I should expect the impeller to come off with the housing? I don't have to somehow remove the impeller first do I? My housing isn't budging. I see that I've got the plastic impeller so thats gotta go, along with replacing the mechanical seal and what not.
  2. Thanks, I'll take a closer look at page.. Im thinking I'll be able to get some info. from here.
  3. Yeah I agree.. I see what you mean... I'll thoroughly inspect and if things are pointing towards additional work needing to be done then now would be the time to do it.
  4. WOW That's a lot to take in. ILl ponder all this tonight.. I need to find out definitively if Vmax pistons will work. I'm thinking that if they do work, then having the cylinder rebored and use Vmax pistons would be the less costly option.. Thanks for continuing to give me options..
  5. Thats something I'll definitely have to consider. I'm not even sure the best way to do that. I'll research tonight.
  6. I was not thinking about that.. Thanks for the reminder. I'm not having any problem with 2nd but I'll consider this.
  7. If you can find where you saw that engine I would be appreciative. I've already gotten some PMs about some engines that might be available. Right now, I'm still working on what would be my best route. A rebore would give me a new cylinder and I would add to that new pistons and rings giving me an engine who's history I know... But all that MAY come at a cost which is prohibitive.. Maybe a used engine should be my route.. I'll start really crunching some numbers today.
  8. So Prairiehammer let me get some clarity... I was able to find the oversized pistons and rings from various suppliers.. Is that all I would need? Meaning, my connecting rod and piston pin will be a direct fit for this new piston?
  9. 83 VR, if you all recall, my ride was burning oil badly and loosing radiator fluid which appears to have made its way to the AIRBOX as an off white gelatinous goo. I also found it in the valve covers and other places. Well, the heads have been removed and the cylinders walls are damaged from water standing in it... ( thanks P.O.). And probably the pistons are damaged as well. It could be rebored if I could get oversized pistons and rings which Im pretty sure I can't. So, anyone know where I can get oversized pistons and rings or am I S.O.O.L.? Next, anyone have a 1200 engine for sale? If not, I'll check EBay and really anywhere else I think I can find one. My ride is a large paperweight right now, but I don't want it to stay that way. I'm looking for input on what I can do.. I don't feel that I want to put in a 1300 unless that's all I can do.. ANY INSIGHT WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
  10. Many thanks... I'll go and buy some tomorrow..
  11. I'm pulling the engine tomorrow and one of the things Im wanting to do is touch up the rough spots in the paint. What paint have you all been using.. Brand, color? I don't want custom, I just want a replacement for the stock color.
  12. I was hoping more riders would answer up on your topic Cabreco.. I'm kinda in the same situation and right now I'm in a good position to replace/rebuild my rear shock as I'm in the process of taking the engine out.
  13. So did you buy the proper equipment to make OEM type connections and chalk it up as lesson learned? Thats what I'm trying to do.
  14. I just had my A$$ handed to me by making bad decisions on electrical connectors. I used bullet crimp (red, blue, yellow) connectors on a VN750 and had horrible frustrating results. So, I want to learn about replacing the pins, male and female, inside electrical connectors. I don't even know how to determine what size I need. 2.8, 4.2, 6.3 etc.. A, B, C, D etc as well... I also need help on buying a respectable crimping tool.. Heres one I found, http://www.discountfleetsupply.com/mtnc48.html What do you think? Please give me your knowledge or web pages to look at to get me started..
  15. No its an 83.. the PO mounted a different Trunk.. I have the 83 trunk, I just don't use it.
  16. All right all right.... You two jumped on wanting proof of my pain quick.. The wife didn't even get out of the car..
  17. Thanks everyone.. I'll need to tweak the fuel level sensor to reflect more accurately.. I had a bar on the indicator and ran out on the highway.. My wife had to come save me.. She even took a pic..
  18. 83 VR I noticed that I only have a fuel shut off valve on my gas tank. I looked inside the tank and their is only a screened pipe coming from the fuel shut off valve. Am I suppose to have a fuel petcock arrangement which includes a fuel reserve position. Once I run out of fuel, I'm out, no switching to reserve. If I am suppose to have a reserve, whats the part number? Thanks
  19. Thanks Neil86, very informative.. This would clearly be more of a job than I thought. Maybe Ill consider a used engine.
  20. 83 VR, VIN on the neck JYA31M00XDA002576, the engines VIN isn't their. I see 3 choices for Piston rings, which one am I suppose to use? And, any ideas where I can get them? I'm still getting the off white goo in the airbox. I'm burning oil too quickly and the antifreeze keeps going down and I've resealed the twinky. I'm considering doing the head gasket and I thought while im in their I'll go ahead and do the rings. I'm going to perform some additional tests but for now I'd like to get some info. and maybe start looking for some items.
  21. All good answers foe shoh.. I enjoy riding because I know I'll be on a bike I saved from the scrap heap. Modern day styles don't attract me. Give me a early 80s to mid 90s and I'm in heaven. Give me a basket case bike, I'll square it away and be proud of it. And when I go for a ride or show up at any event, people will look at my ride and hopefully appreciate that a bike that old is still getting on getting on. BTW: earlier today I noticed that my 83 VR will be an "antique" in a few years. Maybe I'll ride with The Antique Motorcycle Club of America one of these days.
