Started the bike after a lot of work.. Still more to do, but I wanted to start it.. I did: Valve shims Carb rebuild Starter rebuild New thermostat... Here's what happened. I spun the engine over, no start, just listening.. Sounded good. Spun faster than when I got the bike. Open fuel valve, primed engine and it started.. Sounded rough, but figured it was gonna be like that until fuel levels got stable. Shut the engine off to put the right muffler back on. Tried to restart and a very audible clacking sound was coming from somewhere.. The bike did not start because I stopped trying. I got scared at what I was hearing. Turned the engine over by hand, nothing binding or grinding.. My first thoughts were: Valve shim came loose Something got into the cylinder during maintenance Starter clutch Someone give me some advice on where I should start.. I'm demoralized and am looking for guidance..

Thanks everyone.. Got the steering head off, bearing looked like and acted like they were coated in tar... It was somewhat difficult to clean. The "goop" was resisting regular cleaning methods.. Its all back together and feels great. I got the bearings out of the front wheel by using some heat and tapping them out from the opposite side.. Things were looking up until..... See where I started a new post asking for help..

Let me make sure I understand... Their is 1 clip under each ring.. remove that clip then tap the ring UP.. Their is NOT a clip on top of the ring? So, IF their isn't a ring on top, I should be able to tap the ring up without removing the ring underneath first. I could then remove the underneath ring.. I'm just making sure I understand the mechanics of what I'm doing. Thanks.

83 venture Hey all, My steering head bearings need lubing.. but I'm having dificulty getting the fork assemblys out. I can't figure out how to get the 2 air joints to slide off the forks. Once their off the forks will slide out. The forks move, but I can't get the air joints off.. Does the allen wrench bolt on top of the fork have to be loosened? I don't understand why it would but maybe.. Front wheel bearings.. I think I've read that a puller is needed to get the bearings out of the front wheel.. Is this right? If so, I guess I'll take it to the stealer and let them do it...

Good info. thanks.. These are the results I was expecting... $25 WOW, thats a great price for a 4 brush. I'm already into the job of rebuilding it so I guess I'll keep going. I'll admit I didn't research if people had good results with a rebuild kit. The parts all seem fine, except they sent me the wrong oil seal. I finished the grounding job just the other day. I'm sure it will work better. But, as I only started it a few times before tearing into the entire bike for repairs I'm not sure what to expect when I do get it back together. The sealed bearing in the starter was far from smooth. I was glad it hadn't locked up on me, it was that bad. Anyway, I now have some ammo. for the supplier of the rebuild kit to confirm to them they sent me the wrong oil seal. Their looking into getting me the right seal. Thanks for the measurements..

83 Venture, I tried asking a more detailed question yesterday with few results.. So, I'm gonna try this request: If you have a starter disassembled laying around... PLEASE measure the bore where the oil seal sits This is the seal next to the needle bearing. I expect that the answer will be 25mm.. or something like 24.8mm.. I need to know what other people are measuring.. Even better.. if the seal is still inserted, what are the numbers on it.. Thanks, Don AND tell me what bike you have..

Thanks for someone responding with something... But, what I need is the dimesions of the oil seal inside the starter. I think this would even help... If someone has a starter dissassembled, please measure the bore where the oil seal gets pressed into. This would be the rubber seal next to the needle bearing. Or, if you have the seal out, measure that..

83 venture, 2 brush starter What is the dimensions of the oil seal inside the starter? Also, is their a part number on the starter somewhere so I can make sure it goes to a venture? Does first gen. have the same dimensions as the 2nd gen? I've got a rebuild kit and everything is fitting except the oil seal, it's too small... I'm being told that it's the correct size.. So I want to make sure I have the right starter for my bike AND make sure my supplier sent me the right one and isn't trying to get out of sending me the right one.. I don't need to mention the supplier, I just need info. to say their either right or wrong.. Thanks

Nice spreadsheet. I will definitely use it, Thanks Thanks for the idea of swapping shims around.. I'm trying to work with RandyR, he said I could use his. But, Im not sure if my messages are getting to him. I think I figured out what I was doing wrong so hopefully today he'll see my message(s). I will definitely keep you in mind. Thanks for offering Can anyone field this????

1983 Venture Royale, 50,000 miles I just thought I would share my results with you all.. The bike hasn't ever seen a valve shimming according to the PO. Although I don't really trust his input. Anyway, everything is on the low end or out of limits all together. I kinda expected this... So, I'm looking for the borrow/rent of the cam tool and a shim kit.. If anyone is in the Richmond area that has these, and/or if your interested, I'll get you to come by and help out. I really don't think I should put this job off until next year.. I've already got the bike torn down alot for other jobs. What do you all think?

Real nice MASTERGUNS.. I hope my 83 can look that good some day.

AAAHHH HAA.. Thats why the wiring harness didn't look stock.. It was wrapped in orange tape.. You guys were funny, it was like deuling answers.. OK then, I'll use a wiring diaghram from a MKII.. I'm willing to bet that will solve my problem.. The PO hacked this CB in with ridiculious wiring techniques.. Its literally a rats nest of wire.. Many thanks everyone..

1983 Venture The PO did some creative wiring on this bike. The radio and CB aren't working and I've stopped counting the number of splices in the Radio and CB wiring.. So, can someone tell me where to get a wiring schematic? I can't seem to find one that I can actually read. The fuses check out OK. I would like to clean up the mess hes made by tracing all the wires and removing things that don't belong. Also, I found a plug near the headlight with wires coming from the radio area, the schematic says it suppose to be a "Control Unit". Any idea what this is and am I suppose to have one?

Good start to my list.. Yeah the power isn't there, but I'm not worried at the moment as it appears 1 carb is leaking and I have no doubt their gummed up.. No problem, I'll dismantle and clean. The steering feels bumpy. I'm thinking the bearing need lube and what I'm feeling is the bearings tryin to roll as I turn. CRACK AT THE BACK.. I'll definitely look closely at that.. The battery warning bypass.. well... I would rather have it work like its suppose to... BUT.. I also want a maintenance free battery.. So I'm thinking I'll have to do the bypass trick. I saw it somewhere, I'll have to go find it again. Anyway, all of this is so it can be ridden to work and pleasure, but mostly to make sure its reliable for a 2100 mile trip to Canada in late august..

I just bought a 1983 Venture Royale, JYA31M00XDA002576, with 50,000 miles. I've ridden it around the neighborhood and it definitely lacks any giddy up.. The wiring is a basket case as the PO clamped wires all over to accomidate his "customizing".. As of yet I haven't come across anything I really wasn't expecting so I'm not dissapointed with my purchase. With that said, Ive got the bike pretty torn apart and expect to do more the more I learn.. This is where you all come in. Are their things I really have to spend some time inspecting or buying for replacement. You know like maybe recalls the bike might have or parts everyone know is going to fail any moment.. I know the starter is a weak spot on these bikes so i'll be determining if I have 2 brush or 4 brush.. I think the consensus is that I should put a 4 brush on.. Anything else? I will be removing/cleaning the carbs soon. Anything special that I should look for in them? You see where I'm going with this, the bike is tore apart so NOW is the time to handle any quirks the bike might have.. I'm moving quickly as I do want it for the summer.. Thanks
