I would have stopped in to meet up. But my THIRD Vacation with a RSV is canceled as I sit home and wonder why it runs like crap in the low band. I cant stand riding it. Its like I have to hot rod it everywhere and pulling the trailer or cruising highway speeds is impossible. Going in the shop here in two days, I only have 15K available on my Discover. Hope it covers it. I should have bought a hitch for the Roadstar. Looks like you have great weather though. I planned the vacation at the right time. But then I planned on having the bike running right. My eyes are not good enough to work on it no more. Catch Skyline on the way back up. If I get this thing running maybe I should sell it or trade it on a Wing.

Out of nowhere at random times while on this forum I get a sound of like a Ghostly soundtrack. whooo whoooo whoooo and then sounds like laughter maybe and it plays over and over and over until I click off the tab. So I run a gammit of anti Virus and Spybot and all that and there it is again. What is it! I am like pretty sick of it. I use other forums and tabs it only does it here. Using Chrome so the tab at the top shows the little speaker where the sound is coming from what tab. Is it like a persistent ad or what? Can't see anything just hear it. Very annoying!

Where is a good vacuum inlet?
IronMike replied to IronMike's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Ye starts right up, needs a little choke then none on a 65 degree day. idles fine. put it in gear and start to throttle up and it says "Give me a rev or I aint moving....put put put" So ya rev and go and it acts great until you try to cruise in a gear and it acts kind of chokey. not smooth, not snappy throttle sluggish. But only in that first say 15% of throttle. Or right where you would want to cruise down the road in OD. Pipes are a perfect brown color at the ends, spark plugs all checked out changed over to the iridium ones anyways just to see. No difference. Battery charges fine has plenty of juice to run Spark, tank has great gas flow I drain it everytime I take it off, thats been 100 times in three days. Ummmm AIS is still there. Untouched. Anywhere else outside of the first 15% OF THROTLE it runs fine. SO its like you have to hot rod it. You can't just cruise on it. I find myself running 1 gear lower everywhere. The symptom reduces when the motor gets really hot like after you have ridden it an hour. But its still there. I REALLY notice it pulling the trailer. I am about to do something really stupid like take it to a dealer. Where they will charge me too much, say they fixed it but have not and I will be back here but a lot broker. Bike has 22K miles on it. Sync goes pretty easy so I am thinking Valves are ok. I am at whits end here. Its a tiny thing that bugs me a lot. A Fluffy throttle. OR could it be I am switching between the Roadstar and the Venture too much and expecting the torque the Roadstar has out of the Venture? And its nothing? The Roadstar cruises smoothly and I only use about the first 10% of the throttle most of the time. On the Venture the way it runs I can use the first 10% NONE of the time. -
Pulled a Freebird today- but I still have my mower..

Where is a good vacuum inlet?
IronMike replied to IronMike's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Yea I have done this, They were coated. The first issue was Oil Light coming on while riding, mostly during a quick take off, So I figured it was a little low and added some. Then it still comes on so I added more. (All below the indicated line.) Then it shows Over the line awhile later. Delayed effect I guess. Damage already done. Had to clean the Boxes. Yes I did see the drips. What will not go away is the sluggish throttle from stop to about 15MPH is acts like its starving for fuel or Air at that area. AND while cruising in that throttle spot. I guess It could be a TPS I went to test that and its not like the one in the Clymer, Its totally different and looks like a PITA to remove. So I just squirted it and cleaned the contacts. That seems like it stopped the Engine light from coming on. Which is caused by one of four things one being the TPS. It run FINE when you go fast hot rod or get on it. Where it lacks is low end throttle or just cruising. Its not snappy. its sluggish throttle. Until you get past 1/2 throttle then its snappy. Yes clean air filters, Yes new plugs. Yes Seafoamed it until it choked. -

Wonder why mine does light up. If I take off fast it lights until I hit the next gear. like 2nd or 3rd. Bad sensor maybe? OR Full Flow Bypass Oil Filter? -
I want a good vacuum inlet to suck up some deep creep or Carb cleaner. I am still chasing oil out of my Air intake system due to the accidental overfill. And does everyones Oil light, light up on a fast Takeoff? I have already shot the Places where you hook up to Sync the Carbs, Its not that great a place.

Only by the grace of God....(And a little rider experience)
IronMike replied to uncledj's topic in Watering Hole
Just 15 miles away with a Trailer and a Jack AND a Spare tire on the rim was me! 2 hours and you would have rode home. Always glad you did not wreck. -
I get mine at Motorcycle SuperStore. Google it. They get great reviews its the only place I buy tires last 8 years. Very quick to ship and fresh tires. (DOT number)

Which back rest do you have? Pros & cons please!
IronMike replied to coast_of_maine's topic in Watering Hole
Releif! Tis not all for nothing! LOL And it is a great backrest. Go for the little thing that protects your seat. Like a plastic add on piece. It matches exactly. -
I would do a fuse and relay cleaning also. With electrical contact cleaner and brass or SS brush. If the battery was charged it was making a connection.

The rate of survivability drops considerably as we get older. We can't handle the impact like a youngster can and internal organs give up quick. Dawn your gear. I'm figuring on dying while riding. Attack Life....No one gets out alive anyways.

IMHO the tire will with certainty outperform a bike tire under all conditions except above 90 MPH. It will certainly be more planted and sure footed while pulling a trailer. I also pull a 400+ LB Camper and a HF Tag along. There is a LOT more contact patch on the road at all times with a CT so it will really help stopping while turning and in windy conditions. The combo I have works perfectly. The ONLY thing you MIGHT have to watch depending on the tire height, (Mine was slightly less than the Bike tire I took off) if you go too high and your trailer hitch draw bar sticks through the front or forward side towards the tire, you would have to trim it. Like I say, THIS tire give more room not less. Took me a year or even more of studying the Darkside forums to decide, I seriously regret not doing it sooner. It is a subject to study up on though. You don't just do it. http://darkside.nwff.info/?p=tires this guy has a gazillion miles Darkside, wrote several books all about his Darkside travels. Read what he has to say. http://lifeisaroad.com/stories/2004/10/27/theDarkSide.html and of course watch some you tube that SHOWS you how it works. It does not make any sense, but after 31K miles on my Comtrac I took it off and it still had the little nipples on the edges. Only the tread stays on the ground you do not get up on the edge of a CT. Study up. Get a Darkside number!

Good info Wizard, nice to know. I have only worn out 3 car tires, and my experience has been I change it out at about 4 32nds just because it starts to not ride as nice. But this feature gives me plenty of planning time. And this is another key advantage of Darkside, you can always make one more trip without the worry of changing on the road. Its raining here and my Darkside tire is calling me! LOL

AIS Bypass on 2009 venture
IronMike replied to dale4772's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Think I might need a new AIS valve. Mine most likely clogged with oil. How hard is it to get to? -
I know the sliding back tire thing. I had the RS on the dark side and hopped on the RSV and had a deal where everyone was going through the yellow light, then they decided not to since a COP was there, I slid about 30 feet and found a hole between two cars. The Bike tire actually made it speed up on the 911 stop. Same stop on a CT not even a peep. I should have done like you, just went ahead darkside on this bike. Pawned the Avon off on someone else.
-
I have heard a lot of people going darkside on the Strat. Lots of tires to choose from the darkside tire database. I got into it when I was laid off and was putting 20K a year on the bike. I was touring the US and wearing tires out too fast. BINGO! Now a bike tire is dangerous to me. The traction a CT provides is like adding ABS and traction control.

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d139/usmcxterra/Venture%202008/20140820_003515_zpsqmsn9hiz.jpg BF Goodrich Radial TA Wal Mart tire. Everywhere I shopped asked why I only needed one front tire for my Dragster. LOL BTW I put a Michelin Commander 2 Rear 130 90 on the FRONT! I was all set to do this last fall, until I bought leftovers from a Trike conversion that had me looking at a Almost new Avon on the spare Rim I got, it was VERY VERY VERy painful to run that tire out! Hindsight I should have left it rot on the rim. I almost sold the bike for the poor handling and traction it had. Ive ridden the Darkside on my Roadstar for about 60K miles so thats not new to me. But, this IS the FIRST time I have had two rims. So I had the old Avon and the new Radial TA on rims at the same time, so I decided to weigh them and see what the difference was. Worn Avon, 43 Lbs, New Radial TA 45. I was surprised. On my Roadstar the CT is much heavier than the Bike tire. Slips my mind but about 15LBS. I was happy this tire was so close! The CT is slightly smaller diameter overall. For some reason this really helps the ride and handling. Like a LOT! Running 35 and 35 PSI right now. Had it up to 100 for testing. good to go there for now. Balanced by Dynabeads. 3 ozs in both. I can't believe the ride! I did same 100 mile loop and it really tamed the pot holes, bumps and RR tracks! Like a Caddy! It was a Joy to ride I could hardly stop! I was thinking for a while that i would not like the CT on the venture, BOY was I WRONG! I've only had two tires on the venture, both show some odd wear making me think alignment. But I have no Idea how to align this bike. The Roadstar is pretty easy. It's something I need the info on though to me sure. I don't want any odd wear going on with this set up! http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d139/usmcxterra/Venture%202008/20140820_003412_zpsaofb6djd.jpg Only thing better than a Darkside Bike in the shop is TWO Darkside Bikes in the shop! Whooooooooooooooooo! Happy Dance!

I like to wing it myself, Look at the Rainy Days app and go the clear way. http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d139/usmcxterra/Venture%202008/20130928_103646_zpsutosjpe9.jpg I like 555 end to end. I normally take 93E off the north end and go eat Amish food in Sugarcreek. But if we get women in that town we will ride home in the dark for the shopping, so scratch that. ummmm http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d139/usmcxterra/Venture%202008/20130927_144122_zpstswrrhd0.jpg 555 & 93 Split scenery. Can we possibly ride Wayne National Forest? It's not too far. Bike biking draw over there. I know some roads that we can get the ladies to raise their arms like they are on roller coasters! That was a good one Joe.

Well, if you liked THAT road wait until you see what I can tackle with my Darkside tire on! Whoot! 2 Bikes Darksided! And man does it handle sweet! http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d139/usmcxterra/Venture%202008/20140820_003412_zpsaofb6djd.jpg

Rear tire , Final Drive and Drive Shaft
IronMike replied to dave_wells's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
After looking over my Spare Diff I was thinking yes thats how it works. And now I am thinking like someone else said earlier. To put grease in there certainly could clog a hole and starve it for Lubrication. So, we have that Ironed out! Thanks! -
Rear tire , Final Drive and Drive Shaft
IronMike replied to dave_wells's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Sure might have, But I am done, I chickened out! I could not get the speedo Cable out of the hub, I thought if I force this thing its going to break. I have a spare hub and even got to looking at it with no speedo cable in it and it convinced me I was about to break something. So I am in same boat as Dave Wells, And we caught nothing! Ill hack at it when I know more and have more time. 1 day off in 7 aint cutting it. OK so that Chrome Vent looking thing at the top, I thought it might spin, but it don't How do I know its venting properly? How does that come off? -
Rear tire , Final Drive and Drive Shaft
IronMike replied to dave_wells's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I am kind of amazed by the absence of an article on how to do this. I am about to change the rear tire and was going to grease this but can't really find any info on it. I am also of the understanding that the ends have grease only on them and also not enough as with everything else on this bike. We should buy them new and take them apart to grease them. -
Id be comfortable running that oil 8K to 10K but it IS all about how you ran it, how it looks, the feel of it between your fingers, and the filter you used. I have chickened out at 6K and ran oil 12 in my Roadstar Air cooled. I use the http://kandpengineering.com/ oil filter, You can clean it any time and it is a permanent oil filter well worth the Dough. It has a High strength magnet in it that picks up quite a but of loose metal. If you run a regular oil filter I suggest adding a Neodymium magnet to the outside at the lowest point. I have never ran T6 but everything I read about it, I would run it in a heartbeat even over Mobile One. I use Amsoil. HOWEVER You really do not want used oil sitting in your engine. So at least at the end of season it should be drained and either left empty or New oil added. Then don't start it until ride time. I never sweat this because I ride all year. But I still change it every fall. The oil fills up with corrosives as it is used and you dont want them sitting on the bearings and such for a long winter or storage time. A lot of sport bikes are running T6 with no problems.
