Four brush starter upgrade

Recommended Posts

  • 1 month later...

Well, I waited and that lot of starters is now gone. I did a search and found this one for $79, free shipping. It has in the "Replaces these part numbers" the same part number as the other one. So I'm guessing that it should be the same. Will order it this weekend and find out.

What is the ground wire upgrade?????:confused24:

This will explain it.

It does help, I've done in on mine. But as you have to pull the starter out to do it you're more than half way to putting in a new 4 brush unit. The 4 brush fixes the problem.

The things to do:

4 brush unit

Upgrade battery cables

DEKA AGM

Pretty much the best combination to get the best cranking power you can.

I sent them an email and they said this is a 2 brush starter.:detective:

If it is indeed 2 brush it really shouldn't be listed for the newer V-Max motorcycles.

As near as I can recon the Mitsuba SM-229C is a 2 brush starter. The Mitsuba SM13279 is the 4 brush.

THIS ONE is from the same seller at $99 and lists it as replacing both the SM-229C and the SM13279. It's more likely to be a 4 brush starter.

Rare Electrical is the outfit I bought mine from, but they don't seem to currently list a V-Max starter. Might be worth giving them a call (866) 695-0363.

This one also says it replaces SM13-279 and is $88.45 + free shipping. I'll give them a call a little bit later this morning.

Jeff, wouldn't matter on ordering them together, they all seem to have free shipping unless you want it faster. Also, I have upgraded my wires and ran a jumper to the started for a ground, plus did the internal ground thingy inside the starter, didn't really help. I did just get a new battery, not sure how old the last one was (I had the bike for 3 years, no idea on when the PO replaced it). I'm going to install it this morning and maybe take a test spin to see if it will restart hot. I do admit I need to do the fusebox (next on my list) but I don't see how that would affect the starter.

Anyways, I'll report back what I find out about the starter I posted about.

Dang it, called them and they said it was a 2-brush motor. Wonder if they know that as fact or just saying it cause they don't know/don't want to check. Guess I'll be putting out the extra cash for the 4-brush one that MiCarl listed. Really want the hard hot starting to go away, it's embarrassing trying to start it up in public after getting gas or a quick trip into a store.

So are all RSV starters 4 brush? Would a used one from someplace like Pinwall be ok for a cheaper source? Not sure how long a starter will last, I suppose the only real wear item is the brushes.

I am really interested in this because I contacted the shop that does my VR work and asked him about his price. He said about $425 for an OEM and $250 for third party for the 4 brush model. I have looked at these posted up here from EBAY and have to wonder what I am really getting. I want to get mine replace while out on vacation before the summer starts. I too hate getting gas and then it won't start till it cools. My 4th VR and they all did the same thing.

I want to go ahead and do the 4 pole upgrade. So for most folks, if you find one used on say Ebay you feel OK about that or would a new one make you feel better? I know my mechanic can get one but for probably closer to $200. So $100 plus difference on what you are seeing on Ebay etc and a new one. value difference?

I found a used one off ebay for $55.00 off of a Royal Star from 2001 and it looks like new. Keep searching and dont pay over $55.00 shipped.

I took a look at a parts listing for a 2001 and I am only seeing 2 brushes. Are there 2 more already mounted? Am I looking at the right part?:confused24:

The diagram you are looking at is "simplified". Here is a photo of the PArt you get for the "brush set" 3AJ-81801-00-00...

Notice there are 4 brushes.

OK, I was nervous because there is no real proof who has a 2 or 4 brush model on these. I checked out the top one and liked it. Sent a message to the seller and they said it is a 2 brush model and needed to go with a different one. He provided a link for the 4 brush. It is for the V-MAX.

My wife and I both did a search on the OEM numbers etc and found it new and even on Amazon for $79.00 and free shipping.

Still going to all the manufacturer web sites, they do not get the number of brushes. So I am going to try and contact DB and ask them to verify it. But it is for the right bike and year and I suspect since the other person also stated it was a 4 brush versus his in the site above, that it will be a 4 brush. If I can find out for certain, I will post it. thanks.
