I'm ready to blow a gasket with my dealers service. Twice I have Taken my bike to the dealer to get my twinkie leak fixed and still the same thing. Never notice it leaking when the bikes running or hot always after it has set awhile after being ridden. Any clues at to what is going on I'm about ready to tackle it my self and be dam the warranty just hate to have to buy the freakin parts myself. Sorry but I'm pi never mind any suggestions.

I am no mechanic but I would take these/or other photos to the dealer. And then give 'em hell.

Don't blame you one bit:bang head:

they blow it off like other dealers. Yamaha dealer down here would that and they dint last long got to the point the Honda dealer down the street was getting all the work no warranty work but they did good taking care of their customers.

I wonder if they're replacing gaskets when the problem is with the cover or housing itself.....

 

That's what I'm thinking they said they replaced the gaskets I'm suspecting a hair line crack some where close to that bolt.

 

And no its not the rubber plug behind the fins if you look you will see where coolant has leaked down that bolt on the end.

 

Any one had one of these twinkie things off. :bang head: I think all of there good techs have jumped ship to the HD dealer just cant see letting them have a third crack at it.

If the white lines are dried coolant then its certainly coming from the twinkie as you call it. You can see where its leaving a path as it dries. Unless there's some real amateur working on it and that's the second set of gaskets I would have to agree that you have some cracks in that cover. From the looks of it its pretty hard to mess up putting in that gasket.

From what I can see in the service manual, the Twinkie is the crank case breather. I'm not sure if coolant runs through it.

 

 

If it doesn't I got problems. Don't no how to download a link yet still having trouble with pics anyway pulled the service manual for a better look and it is shown in the lubrication diagram pg. 2-26 showing oil flow through it. From the parts diagram pg. b3 and b4 looks like it is directly connected to the cooling system. Service manual pg. 2-25 of the cooling system diagram it doesn't show coolant flow through it that I can tell.

 

This is and 07 and somewhere I read there was a recall on the torque of the heads any chance of a blown head gasket causing this.

 

I bought this bike used and don't know if the head issue (if there in fact is one with this model ) has been addressed. Hope it was my imagination that I read this somewhere. :confused24:

Whoops! I gave BAD info - corrected below.

 

Yes, that "twinkie" is the crankcase breather, but there IS coolant in it. The white lines are certainly suggestive of dried coolant, but if they have actually been cleaned off and then come back after you see the drips, it could be coming from somewhere else and dripping down on top of the breather. but from where the various leaks seem to show in the photos, it looks a lot more like it is coming from under the cap than dripping on it and running around the edge.

 

And yes, the early model 2007s did have a service bulletin issued for improperly torqued head bolts. Your problem could be a leaking head gasket that is dripping down from above. I'd start by taking off the fin covers and making sure everything is dry and clean all round the head gasket area. Then spray the gasket joint with spray foot powder - it will immediately show any moisture leakage. If none shows up right away, just ride the bike normally and/or let it sit - whatever you have been doing - and check the powder frequently until the leak shows up.

 

I have no idea why there is coolant in the breather, but I loosened the clamp on the small hose and saw it for myself. Even though the problem could be the head gasket as I suggested, I'd bet money on a bad breather - either warped cover or bad gasket.

Goose, I hesitate to disagree with you, but the Twinkie does contain coolant and crankcase ventilation and high pressure lubricating oil. It is multi-chambered and multi-functioned. Not one of Mama Yamaha's better ideas. The same Twinkie is in the First Gen and there have been some instances of oil and coolant mixing there as a result of a faulty gasket(s). Sometimes, coolant goes into the crankcase, sometimes oil gets into the cooling system.

P.S. those plugs your talking about have threaded insert in mine for approx 1/4 inch bolt.

Considering the possibility of oil/coolant mix in this part, you do not want to give them any chance at all to blame you! You want to make sure Yamahaha stays 100% responsible for any greater engine damage that could be caused by this problem. Force Yamahaha to fix it right.

 

And keep a close eye inside the oil filler cap AND the coolant overflow tank for any signs of foam!

Thanks Goose and I already forgave you for the other thing. I'm waiting to hear back from another dealer in Longview Tx. Its a lot further from home but I found out the owner is the previous owner of the one in Texarkana back when things were good and came highly recommended.

 

hadn't even thought about the contamination issue glad you mentioned it.

That manifold as I call it has oil and water flow thru it as mentioned. I removed two of them, one with leak and other to polish. I would recommend you take it back to a dealer for repair unless you have patience with wrench. It is a pain to get off mainly because of hard oil tubes feeding top end and make sure you put some smutz on o ring type gaskets to secure placement. They are easy to move out of position putting unit back in. If not correctly installed you will have a coolant, oil mix. Again I would recommend finding a good dealer and let warranty do the work.
