nerve conduction test???

Recommended Posts

Just got back from mthe hand specialist. I definately have problems with both carpells tunell syndrome and low blood flow on the veins on the inside of each hand. Going to have the nerve conduction test by the end of the week and then test on the veins after that.

My queston is what should I expect from the condution test? Ive heard horror stories and also stories of nothing more than minor discomfort along the lines of a mild shock.

So to all youf olks out there that have had this done what was yolur experience. Im not a big baby or anything, so Im not looking to calm my nerves just wanting to know what to look forward to. Either way Ill get the test as something has to be done to corect the problems.

Thanks in advance

David..It is a piece of cake...I was off with back and eventually nerve problems in my left arm and I went thru this same procedure..They hook you to a computer and they have small probes..the first one surprised me and I jumped because I am a BIG CHICKEN when it comes to pain but after that I just sat there and talked to him throughout the procedure..Dont sweat it,not that bad.

I thought the test was a blast.

I love electronic do dads.

I made the poor doc explain the technical aspects of everything he was doing, they must hate engineers.

Worse yet truck drivers that think they are doctors!

The guys above are b/s'n ya ... what really happens is they stick an electrode all the way up under your fingernails ... yes PLURAL .... and then they put a metal hat on ya with other electrodes connected to this big whirring, humming machine with lights and dials all over it and then they fire up this electrical generator to max capacity and once ready they throw a switch and watch you jerk and jump and fry. Wait a minute .... oh, sorry, I guess I was describing some sort of archaic electric chair.... forget what I said... :rotf:

What? Your actually going to pay a Dr. for the test?

You can do the same thing at home with a high output battery charger and a staple gun.

If your fingers twitch......you are probably ok.

Now...spoiler alert! When they ask you to put on a hospital gown......just do it. I know, I know.....it's your hands they are looking at right. Why the gown?

Cheaper than replacing the nice shirt you wore in there. Honestly though, there is really not all that much blood. Just lots of lil spots.

But all in all it not that bad. That is if you are used to seeing your limbs flop around all by themself and your fingers doing tap dances and for some reason you're doing "Jazz Hands" for three hours after you leave the office.

Towards the end if the testing the only finger popping up was the middle one.

Suggestion. Don't ride your bike to the test. Starts can be a lil jerky for a few miles.

Just think of it like this. You have always wanted to rescue a porcupine that was tangled up in an electric fence right? In the rain? 'bout the same.

Enjoy your visit.

Been there, done that. The answer to that question is(D.) All of the above. You should see that in a military hospital. I did. The first time in 1974 as a volunteer. It was done in the Physical Therapy Dept. The last time a couple of years ago in Neurology and that was at the world famous Brooke Army Medical Center.

It was a Electrifying to say least. Have fun. At least they provided me with a chew toy. :scratchchin:

had it done twice in last two years..... they will warn you in advance if the small shock is to be increased...but either way it's not bad. btw due to the results of my two tests i ended up with radial nerve reconstruction and carpel tunnel release....best of luck.

Hurt like an SOB. I think the tester had a little bit of masochism in her. About half way thru the second hand I said that's enough if she valued her life.... Since I outweighed her by about 300 pounds... and only weigh 325.... she stopped. I've now had both hands repaired and no more numbness while riding..... Before all this I couldn't go 3 blocks without the hands going to sleep.....

test is easy as eating cake; Not anything like taking a wiz on the electric fence!!!

Really its nothing after the first little poke you will relax and just laugh at the way your joints kind of jump

You'll be riding in a month. It takes about 6 before you can twist the lid off the PB jar.... :)
