83 carburator issues - idle increases

Recommended Posts

what is typically the problem when the idle increases? I am looking at purchasing a 1083. The current owner indicates that is has something with the set screws slipping, but then says he isn't familiar with it.

Any advise is much appreciated!

Increasing Idle or slow Idle Decrease when coming to a Stop is usually a Vacuum Problem or lean Condition. Carefully spray something flamable like Brake Cleaner around the Carb Boots and Rubber Plugs while the Motor is on Idle. Only work onone at a Time, if the RpM increase, you found the Culprit. If you don't find anything leaky, the Seafoam will help your Case.

on the sea foam soak, is that with the carbs on or off? Describe that process a bit.

Full can of seafoam in a full tank of gas, run it so that all the carbs will have the bowls filled with the mixture. Let it sit overnight and do it's stuff, it will run worse the next day. Ride it hard for 30 or 40 miles, or run the tank completely out. Get on the eway and take her up 70+ mph and run it like you hate it. This will break anything up in the carbs within reason, do a carb sync and let us know how it's running after that

All good advice. Check for vacum leaks first. if you don't find any do the Sync to make sure they are as close as you can get them. Then do the soak if you need to. Sounds like you got junk in the pilot jets. I do the "Soak" a lot stronger. Full can to 1/4 tank or less. Run it until you are sure it gets into all carbs good. Leave sit overnight or longer. Run the Crap out of it til you have to fill up at a place that has a rep for good Clean gas.
