Anti Virus

Got a question for the geeks,

I have been using Grisoft AVG anti virus, the free version, for a couple of years now. All of a sudden I get a virus, that now we can't get online with either the laptop or the home computer. Convienently it will go to AV's website and allow me to buy their anti virus. Now I believe that AV has something to do with this, I'm not that into computers, but it's too much of a coincidence that their website is the only one I can get to.

2 questions

1) Has anyone been having this problem with AVG free anti virus

2) Who uses what as far as anti virus programs, mind you I cant get online to download one onto my computer. I wont use Mcafee as I have used them in the past and been screwed. Norton isn't a popular option with me either unless someone can really give me a very good solid reason to use it.

Any help is appreciated, my cell # is in my profile as until I get this fixed I can't get online from home.

I use AVG on 2 of my computers and Avast on the other 2, both have worked well for me, have detected viruses and malware and thwarted them all, have you been doing the updates on a regular basis, or do they do them automatically? I have mine set to auto update and have no problems......Have you tried booting to safe mode and running the antivirus?

Wait a minute, does it take to Grisoft's site or "AV" site? There's a virus going around that takes you to an "AV" site.

I have got a few calls on just what you have mentioned and will do it when I get home. Thanks for all the support fellas I really appreciate it. I'm going to print the link you posted Forest for removing the av suite :thumbsup2:

I got the Antivir pop-ups this week Brad... Is that what you're talking about?

 

Pop-ups that look like security warnings and you can't do anything on your computer except go to their site and buy the stupid AV software, which is a scam.

 

Then it kept bringing up IE and bringing up tabs for 1 of 3 different sites... Adult.com, porn.com and some site for Viagra!! Wouldn't let me shut any of the browsers or pop-ups down. At one point I had 11 IE browsers open each with many, many tabs open on them.

 

Ended up booting into safe mode and running spybot S&D which caught most of the malware. Then I ran Malwarebytes and it found 2 more. Got rid of all those and rebooted and everything is normal again.

 

Now, when I brought IE and Firefox back up it wouldn't connect to the web until I went into tools, options, advanced, Network tab, settings and told it to auto-detect proxy setting for this network.

 

IE is similar: tools, options, connections, LAN settings, automatically detect settings.

 

I use AVG as well but I think these things sneak in and if they run before you scan then they won't let the AV or spyware software work. I was able to get spybot and AVG to start scans before the malware auto ran (just after booting) and both detected the problems but the malware wouldn't let them take care of it until I did the safe mode thing.

Squid, I was using AVG free and picked up a really nasty virus that I had to pay to have removed. After removal, I asked what the best protection is and to my surprise, they said Norton. Now I have always hated Norton, but the guys said that Norton 2010 was a revamped and really good product. I decided to go ahead and try it and I have to admit that I really do like it. It does not bog the unit down like the old one used to.

Ken,

Thanks for the info, thats exactly why I haven't liked Norton as it was a resource hog. Perhaps they have got it right and I need to take a look at it. I can't fault AVG, which I have had excellent luck with. It just seemed too convienent when the only site I could to was "AV" and I assumed it was part of AVG.

One other thing I learned during my ordeal was that I was running malwarebytes and avg at the same time. The geek squad said that is not a smart thing to do as they kind of work against each other.

Also, the laptop I'm on now has the Norton 2010 on it and it's about 4 1/2 years old so if this one can handle it, just about any PC can.

I posted a few weeks ago about the fake malware that says your computer is infected and it immediately starts scanning. It locked up my computer twice and I couldn't get into my registry to delete it. I thought if you had a firewall and anti virus program your computer would be ok but that isn't the case. You also need to run one or two spyware programs frequently. I have four different spyware and malware programs and each one will pickup up something the others don't. I can clean my computer of any vicous programs and within a few days the fake malware will pop up again. One day the malware popped up stating my computer was infected and I hit control alt delete and killed it. It popped up 9 more times. Each time I would control alt delete and kill it. It's a constant battle keeping the fake malwares out.

Hey Folks,

 

I gotta tell you, if I ever run into one of the pukes that makes these viruses, I'm going to string them up from a tree and use them as a pinata! I finally, thanks to all of you good folks, got the computers back running. It took me all afternoon and the evening yesterday and about 4 hours this morning to make it happen.

 

I ended up using the "anti maleware" program mentioned by The Marshall and ran it in safe mode 3 times on each computer. I then reinstalled the AVG on both computers and ran 2 virus scans. That got the pop ups gone, but then as a parting gift, the virus made it so my internet explorer wouldn't connect me to the web :buttkick: So I ended up going with Mozilla Firefox (it was installed on the PC already) and got to the internet on the big computer. The laptop was more of a pain in the rear as it wouldn't hook up to the net as it said the proxy server wouldn't let it. Spent an hour trying to figure out how to make that happen, but I did. Now the laptop is running on Mozilla also as the IE was pooched on it too.

 

One hell of a learning experience that I wish I didn't have to do :doh: Thank you all again for all the emails and phone calls and posts here. I seriously doubt I could have done it without you folks.....beers on me when we finally hook up again! :beer:

You need to go into internet options and change the settings on your proxy server connection.

 

Tools

 

Internet Options

 

Connections

 

LAN Settings

 

Unclick the proxy

 

Restart IE

 

Thats what I did Forest and made it so the router would allow the Firefox to operate. I wont be going back to IE as I called Microsoft for a bit of advice, they wanted $60 for their advice....told them I didn't think it was worth that

Yep Mac is the answer. Have no antivirus software installed for last 10 years.

Linux is good. I have the Ubuntu and Kubuntu distros of Linux, along with Windows 98, Windows XP and Mac OS on this one iMac computer. I leave Mac OS X in charge of all the hardware and run the other OS's as virtual machines under Parallels. I rarely run the Linux stuff...simply find no need to with Mac OS. I sometimes boot up Windows XP, mainly to keep it updated on the virus software. If I dont boot it up for a few months, the Microsoft and virus updates under Kaspersky take quite a while to download and install. By the way...Kaspersky seems to be quite a good security suite..at least as fas I can tell.

With a Mac, you can run any or all the operating systems, simultaneously or isolated from each other. Its having the best of the desktop computing world all in one machine.

 

By the way...I have been running Macs for about 5 years now and have had zero viruses or malware...and I dont run any type of virus scanner on the Mac OS side.

 

Some viruses are supposedly out there that can get into a Mac...but...I run automatic hourly backups in TimeMachine that can currently take me back to the pre-virus state of my machine, all the way back to January 21 of this year.

 

Like I said, once you go Mac, you never go back...

 

Cept the boss...he did. Oh well. :think:

Good luck with that. You'll be a statistic soon. You should take a look at a few issues Network World. Macs are the new frontier.
