Here's a drawing of the gauge plate I used.

The upper corners will have to have a radius on them to match the dash. Also, one of the gauges was a little tight (oil pressure, I think) so you may have to open it a little.

 

You can use Aluminum, steel, ABS or just about anything that's reasonably rigid.

 

 

I just upgraded the dash plate drawing to show the radius at the upper corners. Also added a drawing for the mounting brackets.

finally just pushed until it and my bicep broke. I got it loose and my arm hurts. It almost acted like it was cross threaded at first but came out fine. I have threatened the mechanic at my local shop to execute him if he ever used the strong loctite on my bike. I know this came from the factory. I wonder what those plugs were intended for. Also if you have your venture lowered without the shorty stand, a small amount of oil comes out.

What is the gauge next to the speaker?

 

That's my ammeter. I hope to put it in the gauge cluster and move my tach to that spot. I just need to find an 1 1/2" ammeter in white face/chrome bezel.

I use the SunPro brand available at AutoZone and Advanced Auto (others, too I'll bet). These are available in white or black face, chrome or black bezel. Also O'Reilly Auto Parts sells Equus brand (white face only) which are very good.

Auto Meter makes excellent gauges but so far I haven't found 1 1/2" gauges from them. All of the above mentioned gauges come with oil, water & volts only.

Harbor Freight offers a set, but the only ones I've seen so far come in black face and black bezel. These would probably look great on a Midnight color scheme. HF gauges are oil, water & amps. They may have a volt meter option, I don't know.

There are many other options out there. Just find a set you like. They just need to be 1 1/2" if you are going to put the gauges in place of the cassette player.

Want to thank Ponch for the plate and parts to install the gauges on my bike. If you are ready to make this install you need to order your parts from him. Everything went together easily and no leaks. The only thing I had to do was take my dremel with sanding drum on and work down the gasket on the adapter for the thermocouple on the water temp to fit in the well on the head and it sealed up nicely. I did make one booboo, I had the plate fit flush and marked and tapped the bracket to use the gromet from the casset player and after the install realized I hadn't tightened the part the holds the gauges on. So when I tightened it it pulled the plate in slightly but it still looks great to me. An easy fix would be to drill it out and install a nut on the back then it could be readjusted. Those are basically the same faceplate as the Sunpro gauges that I used on my bike. They look good but I honestly think that Ponch's design looks much better. I've got one of his now and will be re-doing mine in the next week or two. The biggest thing is that is fits flush in the recess where the tape deck was and looks more like a factory option. Really great job.

I understand. Like I said, I will be changing mine out soon. I've got Ponch's faceplate already and it is painted to match the dash on my '99. I have also ordered a set of Equus 8100 gauges to replace the SunPro gauges. I don't know WHY exactly but I just kind of liked the looks better and they have a screw on ring on the back rather than the U Brackets that hold the gauges in. Don't know that it's any better but decided to give them a try. I just wish they had the beige faces but oh well.

 

So....I will soon have a set of SunPro gauges with the chrome face plate that I will probably give to somebody else who wants to use them. Maybe another contest? I don't know...we'll see.

Folks let me know what you think.. I need the criticism.:think:

 

- Added the antique look to the back plate of the gage,

- Added black to the (florescent needle),

- Panted the back plate (new pearl white) the MM colors,

- Painted the Sunpro Outer Rings (ceramic Ivory) MM colors.

- Painted the Sunpro plastic inner Rings (ceramic Ivory) MM colors.

 

I was wondering if you think that I should leave them chrome or make

them the same color as the back plate? not sure yet. it almost looks

pretty cool like this. *LOL* there is not really any chrome when looking

toward the speedometer so I was thinking this might be the trick :whistling:

 

I am in the playing stage right now.

Cougar,your guages look outstanding! How did you antique the guage face and paint the needles to match,if you don't mind me asking.I'm with Freebird,I haven't been able to find guages that match the dash.Yours are the closest I've seen.I would like to be able to do that to a set of guages for my bike.If you could give details that would be great.

Second. I miss flying myself, maybe one day I could do that again.:confused07:

 

OK, the trick came to me when Freebird posted that link

to that gauge he liked a lot , what I did was go down to

my Local Copy Works had the guy pull that Gauge up on his computer

select the color with his high power Photo-Shop, Then had him copy

that color onto a transparency sheet like we use to use in the old

days for overhead projectors for $2.11 (20 per sheet)

That was the easy part, hardest part is removing the rings with-out

gouging your palm with a small screw driver.

 

If anybody is interested I can punch holes in the right spots for you

and send you off the pieces I even found the right hole punch.

 

The other trick is to line up the holes on each printed ring on the

transparency then the trick is to make a fine cut from hole to hole

under were the gauge needle comes to rest on the stop.

 

Another trick is going the be adding this to the front plate

on the volts front panel. working on that right now.

 

OR do some kind of write up if there is enough interest for others

to attempt this project.

 

I still am trying to get the right mix of model paint to remove the sunpro

logo..almost there but might give up on that. but I am getting real close

to that color now. there is a lot of Grey in the sunpro colors on the white

gauges.

 

Paint the needle with testers gloss black , at first I just used a black sharpie

but maybe that would fade over time?

 

I will post my final results in a month or so, when I can not ride anymore

in Iowa.

 

I figured that if I messed up to bad I would just go and get another set

of gauges :rolleyes: there cheap enough.

 

I think to most important part is to use "PONCH'S" kits that he has

been making. there high Quality and you can not beat the price,

He has a lot of work into helping us do this mod. Sure glad I did

not have to worrie about making those plates, brakets ect.

 

The second thing that will be needed is the 3 parts

of color/clear-coat from colorite.
