There is next to no chance of getting air into the system when pressing back on the pistons with the bleed screw open a bit especially if you don't open the master cylinder cover. In fact, the service manual advises you to do this when installing new pads as the way to make sure the caliper fits back over the pads. Andy

Welcome to the fun house ... and don't worry ... we're all feeling much better now! By the way, the EBC numbers you want are FA179HH for the front (2 sets) and FA123HH for the rear. The job is dead easy but I would recommend using a torque wrench to replace the bolts. This is a critical piece of safety equipment and it is a very good idea to ensure that the bolts are evenly torqued down and sufficiently torqued down without overdoing it. Even a cheap old style "beam" style wrench will do the job and in fact it may be better than a cheap "clicker" type wrench. The service manual is available in the tech section and there is usually someone available on the forum should you need a hand. Also, if your present pads are very worn, you may have to push the pistons back in to fit the calipers back on the rotor. An easy trick here is to slightly open the bleeder screw and press the pistons with your fingers to force some brake fluid out. This will give you more working room to re-install the calipers. You may have to add a bit of DOT 4 fluid afterwards if this drops the level in the master cylinder too far. Check your fluid colour as well - if it has been a while since it was replaced, it may be a rather dark colour indicating that the system should be flushed out and the fluid replaced. And the suggestion to clean the calipers and pistons is a very good one! Do it! Good luck! Andy

Thanks, I'd appreciate that. I seem to have decided to keep the bike (I've been going back and forth since my wife can't ride anymore - won't be many long trips in the future!). It's such a good looking machine and I like the sound even with the stock pipes (Sounds great from the seat - I don't care what passersby think - I ride for my enjoyment, not theirs!). I guess this means I'll be ordering your lift adapter soon - I have more plans for the bike and that would be a much better way to work on it. Now I have to finish reassembling a couple of the other bikes and selling them to bring in some more, uh, er, safety items money for the RSV. Andy

Doing some prep work before installing my new pads on the RSV and bleeding the system. I noticed that one of the rubber "boots" on one caliper had been improperly put in and someone had shoved the mounting bolt right through the side of it. I like keeping dust out of things so I slipped down to the dealer to order a new one. Jeeeezzzzussss! $10.00 for one little accordion shaped piece of rubber! less than an inch long! Oh well, at least the standard links to replace the ones from the lowering kit are only $21.00 each. More expensive than Bike Bandit but by the time I add in shipping, etc, the price is about the same so I'll probably order those in next week once the front brakes are done. Also, I'll be painting my chrome surround on the tank to get the reflection out of my windshield. Haven't decided yet if I'll get the Yamaha gas cap cover or just keep my cut down, blue, genuine Yamaha beer cozy. It looks kind of neat and is a bit of an attention getter. After that, I'll use my buddy's 4 gauge vacuum set to sync the carbs and hopefully get rid of my occasional backfire on decelaration - unless it's an exhaust leak. Oh well - one thing at a time. Andy

Went to the Honda "Rock the Red" event ion Markham on Sunday and ran across this new ATV model. It's obviously for use in deep mud holes and for seeing over small hills. I also got to try out a normal sized side by side ATV on their off road course with my wife as a passenger. I thought she might get nervous in that environment but instead she just laughed herself silly as we bounced around the trail through the tight turns and up the small hill. Also fun was my ride on the new F6B Wing. Very interesting machine! Torque everywhere ... just crank the throttle in any gear at almost any RPM and it just zips away. With a full face helmet on, you could be riding one of the new electric bikes! Little sound - no vibration - just a hard shove forward. But ... without a backrest, I found the riding position to be hard on my lower back - the half hour ride was about as much as I'd want to do - getting old, I guess. Also there is enough wind protection to keep you from having to do a 100 KPH pull up, but you do get a steady blast of air at helmet level so I was glad I'd brought my full face instead of the 3/4. It does look mean and with the accessory exhaust, it sounds like a hot Porsche from behind but little sound reaches you on the seat. All in all, a nice bike but even if I had the $'s I would prefer to keep my RSV. Now a full Goldwing on the other hand, would be nice. But only if I had enough money to pay someone else to work on it. I couldn't believe the amount of time it took my buddy to change the air filter on his 1800. So much body work to remove! Being on the poorer end of the economic scale and not too mechanically skilled, I think I'll stick to a bike I can work on myself without spending an hour or so removing body panels. Andy

Annoying, isn't it? When I dropped mine (As most of us have done or will do!) I backed near the edge of the garage door. I then took a 2 X 4 with a notch cut in the end to fit on the bar and another short 2 X 4 so that te total length of the 2 was longer than the distance from te edge of the door to the bar. I placed the longer piece against the bar, the shorter piece against the edge of the door and then put the two ends together (looked a bit like a pyramid.). Then I just pressed gently down on the tip of the "pyramid" which pushed against the bar and straightened it that way. I think the pin is similar to the type used to hold panels to the interior of a car and you can get those at Canadian Tire. Andy

Can't seem to transmit with the cb on my RSV. Others can hear the button "beep" when I press and let go but they can't hear me on the mic. I've changed the cable and used a different headset and I tried transmitting from the passenger plug. Any ideas? Andy

Riding lamps seem dim

Yes of course you're correct. I should have made myself clearer. The lights looked less yellow than they did before they were wired directly to the battery through a relay. This was because they were "losing" some electricity to the ignition switch as it was having to handle more electricity than it actually could. The same thing can happen with a bad connection as it reduces the voltage available to drive the lights. Checking connections would be your best starting point. Andy -

The J.C. Whitney shock ad was mentioned in another thread on this forum. The Progressive Suspension site does not show any 420 series shock. It does show a 425 series shock for the Yamaha Rhino ATV. As well, the Whitney ad shows a picture of what they say are fork springs but the picture is of the two rear shocks for the so-called 420 series. I think the J.C. Whitney people are suffering a bit of a brain fart on this one. Andy -

I checked the Progressive site and they don't show a 420 series shock for any Japanese motorcycles! They do show a 425 series shock for the Yamaha Rhino ATV. I wonder if the Whitney people got their type of vehicle confused. I just noticed too that the J.C. Whitney ad shows a picture of a rear shock under the heading of fork springs!!! Doesn't give me any confidence! Andy -

+1 on that. Old #2 from Bowmanville to Burlington is just one long city street (30 mph speed limit) with lots of lights and traffic. You'll take an hour and a half ride and turn it into a 2 1/2 hr to even 3 hour ride! It won't be scenic and it won't be fun. I'm not sure if it's even still marked as # 2. It may just be a street name now that changes with the municipality. Andy

Yes there is an excellent article in the tech library on electrical work: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=68952 Also, even if the problem is a poor connection, it's still a good idea to go the relay route as some members who have done it have found that their lights were brighter afterwards. As well, this modification will help avoid problems with the ignition switch and the connector between the ignition switch and the ignition circuit. Good luck and don't be afraid to ask more questions as you check out the problem. Someone on the forum will probably have the answer you need. Andy -

One statistic that I did not see mentioned was produced by an insurance organization some years ago. It stated that (at that time, anyway) the majority of accidents occurred to riders with less than two years of riding experience or who had less than two years experience on the motorcycle that they owned at the time. In other words, not only is it a good idea to get some good instruction and experience when you learn but also when you change bikes. I would think that this is especially true when going from one class to a very different class of bike - e.g. - from a crotch rocket to a cruiser or vice versa. Andy
