  1. Cleaned the carbs, gunked to high Heaven. Now discovered that one of the drain screws is missing. Can these be bought? I could just plug it with a piece of o-ring and a screw, but I would like the right part. Fired the bike up but no change in the way it runs. Idles great, but as soon as any throttle is given, it wants to die. I think I'm going to check the coils and plugs. Any other ideas?
  2. Pulled the carbs off (lots of fun), and check the diaphrams. No tears or worn places. But I can't seem to find a clutch master cylinder rebuild kit. I found one for the slave though. Anybody got a good supplier? Also, is there an easy way to pull the float bowls without having to disassemble the whole carb assembly?
  3. The bike sat for @2 years with old gas in in the carbs. I'm sure the draw tubes are gunked up with varnish, so I'm going to pull the carb assembly and clean the bowls and float seat.
  4. Got bike to run, but only with choke on. Carbs still gunked. At 2k rpm's charging output was 13.52 volts. Seems like it's charging ok. Now I need to bleed the clutch, but either the Master or the slave is bad. I figure the slave is the likely culprit, so I'll order a rebuild kit and fix that.
  5. Actually most vehicles now use a NC switch like on the Jimmy. The power is fed from the fuse and the relay as mentioned above. After switch power is broken, then the relay keeps the light on through the delay timer.
  6. The amp draw was .5 ma. I couldn't get a true voltage output, because the carbs are all varnished up on inside. I can keep the engine running on carb cleaner, but it won't draw fuel through the carbs. I hope today to pull the carbs and clean them, then it should run.
  7. I searched for Yamaha Venture Forum, and there it was......
  8. Checked the stator and all seems good. Not going to ground. Got the carbs to stop pouring fuel out the overflows, but must be gummed up inside. Won't stay running without spraying carb cleaner in it. Thought it might start to pull fuel on it's own, but doesn't seem likely. I'm starting to wonder if there was a charging problem to begin with. So far, everything has checked out good, and I watched the voltage meter while it was running and it was going above 12v as I rev'ed it up. Who knows, maybe I'll be lucky and this thread wasn't even needed. But still lots of thanks for everyone who chimed in with the good advice, it was a big help.
  9. Well, got it fired up, but the floats are stuck so its pouring gas out. Can't keep it running long enough to check the stator output or the rectifier. I guess I will have to pull the carbs and clean the needles. I hope to get some pics or a video up soon.
  10. Ok. Checked the stator wires and got .5 ohms. Is there a test for the rectifier that can be done without the bike running? I hope to get the carbs cleaned out by this weekend and get it running to check the charging system out better.
  11. Thanks. I will do this test this afternoon and post back results.
  12. I will double check the amp draw. I may have misread it, which is likely. I"ll look for the other fuse box, but the bike is all apart and I did not see one, but I wasn't looking for it either. Thanks again for all the excellent advice and pointers.
  13. No problem with the plastic being off, the bike came in boxes. But my meter is a Fluke multimeter with auto ranging. I switched between ranges to make sure and it read .5 and 497-501.
  14. If you use a 2 part epoxy, make sure it works for ABS plastic.
  15. Checked the amps and got 500ma with everything off. Pulled fuses and all plugs again and no change. 500ma seems like a small amount to me. Remember that this bike has not run in a while, so I am going on what information I was told. I'm starting to think it may be a charging issue instead, but I will need to get it running to check. I turned the engine over with the starter and everything seemed okay. I will need to pull the carbs and clean them because I could smell the old gas.
  16. Brand new battery, fully charged. I unplugged the coils, rectifier, stator and just about anything I could find with a connector, but still pulling 12volts. Will keep searching, and sooner or later I guess it will rear it"s ugly head.
  17. Pulled the positive and checked between pos battery and battery side of solenoid. Got 12v. Pulled each fuse and still had 12v. What would unplugging the rectifier do and where is it. Keep in mind that I got this bike Wed and today is the first time I have even looked at it.
  18. Thanks. I thought that problem might be a drain elsewhere, so I will give that a shot after a full charge.
  19. I tried searching, but no luck. So I hope someone can help. I just got a 1984 XVZ 1200 that supposedly runs great, but the coils are suspected of draining the battery. The bike has sat in a garage for a while, so I just got a new battery and am giving it a long slow charge. Meanwhile I am in the process of putting the bike back together. Any help would be appreciated.
