Any military base will have 190 everclear at the PX liquor store. It's best to call before you go to be sure it's in stock. Of course you must be able to buy on base.

OR IS IT ? A bit of reading and it's got me wondering about NAS. If the NAS is attached and running isn't it also vulnerable to virus and malware infection ? If I disconnect it from the network until the next time I want to backup, then how does it catchup on data changes in the 2 PC's I'm looking to protect.? Again my main goal in all this is the protection of my OS's and data. Once a month or so I'd want to update my important stuff. So is NAS or Cloned drives in a safe the better solution? only because there is no little exploding head guy to put here

Well after all this discussion on what's & how's, Carlos has graciously offered to help me put together a NAS box to backup and store all my pc data. Seems like the best solution. Think I'll go get another Hd to extend the capacity. This has been an extreamly informative subject, thanks to all the contributors.

Carlos, Give me a call, let's talk about this. I do have an older XP box with a 650GB drive. only problem with it is I can't get it to connect to my network. It only wants to connect thru dialup not the network cable.

OK.. here's my next question. I have decided (I think) that instead of using the external drive that uses a usb2 connection to do the clone, I am going to install the new drive into my pc to do the clone. This should make cloning faster. When I reboot the the pc it's going to see the brand new drive and I'll partition and format it, windows will want to mark this drive as E or F most likely, when I clone the existing C: drive to this new HD, is the letter assigned during the partition and format going to be a problem when I do as Brian suggested and use this a my system drive, or will I need to change the drive letter of the clone? I plan to use the free Acronis software offered by WD to do the cloning. Here is a link to the new HD specs http://www.wdc.com/global/products/specs/?driveID=1086&language=1

The drive I am cloning has about 600GB on it so I would expect it to be an all day affair over a usb2 connection. Lots of photos, music and video. WD offers Acronis true image software if it detects that you have a WD drive attached to the system.

I went out today and bought a HD enclosure and a Western Digital 2TB RED NAS 3.5" drive that I'm going to partition and format as one large drive to clone my drive. The Red drives come with a 5 year warranty and if the drive fails within the warranty period WD will recover the data at no charge.

I should mention that after backing up, the drive will be disconnected from the system to prevent virus/malware migration onto the backup drive. Then once a month it will be updated after scans ensures there is no nasties on the pc. Thanks to all for contributing to this thread, it should help others as well.

I found this microsoft article that explains how to use drives larger than 2.19TB , it is possible if...... http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/i-have-a-3-tb-drive-windows-7-ultimate-wont-format/b1cc3811-f25f-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5

Thanks for your observations on drive dependability. Do you agree with what Brian said (post 2) about being able to overcome the HD size issue with win7 by formatting and partitioning a 3TB or larger hd ?
-
GB drives are no problem. When they exceed 2.19TB Winders 7 can't handle them.

I read several seagate tech articles, it appears that it's more a hardware design issue in how the HD is constructed and Seagate tech support claimed that reformatting or partitioning will not overcome the issues win 7 has with drives over 2.5TB I could probably have used it with an aftermarket backup software package but wanted to keep this as simple as possible, I'm a dangerous novice when it comes to computers, I know just enough to get myself in deep doo-doo This is a non-issue since I returned the 3TB drive and am looking for a reliable 2TB drive to replace it. Any you can recommend?

I am in the market for a 2TB external drive to do backups of my win 7 64bit pc's. Seems most all the common ones (inexpensive) have tons of reviews claiming failures of one sort or another, :feedback: on helping me make a decision. I'm confused. I bought a Seagate backup plus 3TB drive only to find out that Win7 backup/restore doesn't like 3 TB drives. The drive is formatted in a way that causes the windows backup and restore to fail when creating a system image because it uses a native 4k sector size. Native 4k drives are not supported by Windows 7.

I'd rather spend the $$ being proactive than to pay some scumbag to recover my data.

After reading this thread and some online info I got to thinking that I need to backup some of our data, here is a question I have for y'all in the know. Both my home PC's run Win 7 64bit. I have another PC running Vista home premium 32 bit, with a 500GB HD, that does not get hooked online. Can I pull the files from the Win 7 machines and store them on the Vista box without having problems because of the different OS's ? My plan is to put files on flash drive sticks and then load to the vista machine. I'll be saving pictures, docs, quicken data, address and bookmark folders.

Now all you need is an uncle Fester light bulb to complete the look.

You also need to inspect the STOCK license plate bracket that holds that HD light assembly on, they can and will crack. Mine did and had to be welded. The HD lights are a nice addition, I like them. -
used to stud the dirt bikes for winter fun, that was a looong time ago, It is a blast on ice.

Looks like they're having a bit of trouble with the sever upgrade. The site was only supposed to be down for a short time but I still am getting this message.
