  1. I had already replace hose to plastic elbow. Flows real well.
  2. Havent tried that yet. Have tried operating brake foot brake with reservoir fulll and didn't have any success in filling master cylinder. Would of thought gravity pressure from reservoir would have been enough. Guess reverse bleeding is next next step.
  3. Rebuilt a rear master cylinder for my 83 Venture. Made sure to clean the small hole inside the plastic elbow. Upon reinstallation cannot get fluid to fill it. Filled reservoir no fill. Pulled line to front brake. Still cannot get fluid into master cylinder. Tried pumping but still no fill. Shouldn't gravity be enough to fill up master cylinder?
  4. Thanks to all for the helpful info. The previous owner had run a wire from the rigth side front marker to the low beam headligth wire and 3m clipped it. This worked fine untill now. Fuse for marker and tailight assemblies which was now powering the headlight as well had blown resuliting in very dim light. Removed this lead, replaced the blown fuse, resodered the CMS. Upon reinstalling CMS new set of issues. No tailight, front markers work, Low powered low beam, High beam works, CMS indicators some times flash, some times off, some times on. Ended up running wire from side marker to tail lights. They now work. Went for test ride. CMS stopped indicating problems as ride progressed, low beam began working correctly, high beam continues to work. Even gas gage seems to work. Useable for now. I plan on replaceing the fuse block and CMS after the riding season ends or on a rainy weekend. Once again Thanks!!http://www.venturerider.org/forum/images/smilies/fingers-crossed-emoticon.gif
  5. When I bought my 2nd 83 Venture the computerized warning system has worked inconsistantly. Was also told by previous owner that head light was wired to bypass a relay that was not working. Headlight has now gone dim. Replace bulb but still not bright. Was going to replace CMS unit with one from my parts bike which was working when parts bike became a parts bike, but wondering if i could just replace whole dash unit. Dashes aren't the same as you can see.
  6. This happend 2 weeks before our annual "Quilt Shop Hop" My wifes solution was a new bike. So looked at Craigs list and purchased a 83 Venture with 40000 miles on it. We've put 1500 miles on it in the last 2 weeks. Great short term fix. With all the riding not much time to work on broken bike, but still inten to fix problem bike. Took out clutch completely. Gears and shift retainer seem ok. In one direction felt clicking, in other direction didn't move. Put bike on center stand to remove rear tire to take out drive shaft. Clicking feel that was their with bike on side stand went away. When spining driven shaft or rear wheel all is smooth. Pulled drive shaft. All splines look good. Trying to get a good look at u joint, but even with rubber boot pulled way back cannot see real well. But, all clips are there, no evidence of movement on any of the bearings and spins freely when drive shaft or transmission is spun. Although clutch seemed to be working prior to disasembly, once clutch pulled, clutch lever would not move. pushed on the actuating rod and lossened clutch slave and moved fine after that. Wish I had looked closer at the clutch assembly movement befor i romoved the clutch from the bike. Going to replace slave assembly and reassemble bike and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestions.
  7. A little more info. Engine still runs. Sounds normal in neutral. Pulled Clutch and every thing seems ok. Grinding noise if placed in any gear. If the drive shaft u joint, and or splines went wouldn't you only get the sympton when releaseing the clutch in gear? Appriciate the help.
  8. While acclerating hard in 1st gear shifted at about 6500rpm. Instead a normal clean shift, nothing except a grinding noise. Tried shifting to third, same thing. After coasting to a stop, same grinding noise and no engagement in all gears, except nuetral. Any ideas as to the damage and feasibility of repairs would be appriciated. With 90000 miles on the bike it might be time to start looking on ebay again.
  9. Is this do able or am I a brick shy of a full load? Any suggestions would be appreciated. My son completes boot camp in late june. I would like to attend the ceremony. I have limited time off from work. Looking at riding there and back 3 days each way, 800 first day MN to CO, 900 second day CO to Nevada, 500 miles 3rd day Nevada to San Diego. I have done a couple back to back 750 mile days in the past so the length of time on the bike doesn't worry me, more the terrain (desert and mountains) and a strategy if something fails on the bike so far from home. The bike has 80,000 miles on it, and is in good running shape.
  10. One of my forks started to leak last summer. Pulled them both off the bike over the weekend and brought them into a reputable mechanic to get new seals and progressive springs. Was informed that one of the forks was worn and pitted beyond safe usage. The other had a worn but usable lower bushing. The mechanic gave me 2 choices... 1. New Fork from Yamaha @$325.00. 2. A pair of Aftermarket forks for @$265.00. My third option would be a set of forks from ebay off of a bike with 39,000 mile that do not leak. The bike has 75,000 miles on it and is a sound runner. I'm leaning towards the ebay set (I like cheap) but the set of aftermarket forks are tempting too. Any advice or other options I haven't thought of would be appreciated! Thanks
  11. Thanks for the input. Upon making it back from Iowa the bike has run trouble free over 300 miles. This last weekend changed fuel filter, sea foamed the carbs, checked the kick-stand switch and cleaned the fuse ends and reset them as preventive maintenance. Not exactly sure what was the problem but it hasn't reoccurred. Once again thanks for the suggestions. HStocker
  12. I was attempting to repeat a trip I made to Colorado from Minnesota 2 years ago. We were making good time to just north of Des Moines When "Big Red" just quits running at 75 mph. We make it to the shoulder and we get sputtering but will not start. We wait about 25 minutes and it starts and we are on the road again for 5 miles when we stall again. After a half hour cool down no restart and the battery is drained, we call for a tow. After waiting another 1/2 hour for the heck of it, I try again, starts right up. Make it 5 miles into Akany, got a motel for the night. Ride to get supper everything is fine. Decide to head home rather than continue trip. The bike runs great 200+ miles all the way home. Now I'm wondering what happened? Also wondering about strategies for handling problems and repairs on long distance trips. Any one have any good tips? Thanks H Stocker
