1. People will tell you what ever you want to hear. "It was driven by grandma only on Sundays just to church service." "Highway miles." "Never dropped." "Always garaged." "Runs great." "Well maintained" None of that is a substitute for a mechanical inspection and review of the service records! If the dealer/private seller lacks a complete set of service records, negotiate a price below the blue book value. You'll know how much to offer after your mechanic inspects the bike.
2. Speeding recklessly, aggressively passing, disregard for the traffic laws; may result in a collision, not an accident. The at fault insurance provider is required to pay out, up to the the limits of the liability coverage.
3. Excellent condition $6,000 when purchasing from a dealer. Less if not excellent. Less if no records. Less if private sale. What is the asking price?
4. You guys are hilarious! I know I know I'm still debating how I can sneak the $12 per year past the wife. A site like this probably cost more than a $1k per year for software, servers, bandwidth, power, cooling. And that's not including the cost of IT management.
5. I know this. I'll walk away from it. I say this to people who think it's ok to ride stupid; You accept your fate, liability and fault. I walk away with a clear conscience. You may not walk away at all.
6. Talking strictly on safety; then without a doubt, lane splitting is less safe. My car, truck or van is much slower to accelerate when changing lanes from a slow roll in traffic. It's going to hurt them a lot more than it's going to hurt me!
7. On the race track? Priceless! Not that race tracks have that many rocks but they do push it in the corners. On the street? Just ride safe and dress for the slide. [insert "racing is for the track" public safety message here]
8. Think of what happens when 2 lanes merge together. Lane splitting is nothing more than aggressively passing to over take the lane. Lane splitting is not extra space that's going unused. It's the only space keeping vehicles from hitting the sides of each other. And the shoulder is not a lane otherwise anyone would drive their car in it going around everyone else for that matter. I've watched videos of people, lane splitting in CA and abroad. Not impressed. Constantly in these videos, no matter the rider, no matter the country, I see these lane splitters making traffic worse for everyone. Sure, maybe it does shave hours, but I'm thinking it only does so at the expense of others. That the traffic bottleneck is still there, that by passing other cars and over taking the lane they bump others further back. Because the fact is the motorcycle eventually must re-enter the lane and consumes a "car" length anyways! Now what I would vote for is to take the far left lane on a 3 lane highway and divide it into 2 smaller lanes and there's your split lane!
9. OMG I can see MYSELF in the reflection. So are you going to tell us how much you paid?
10. There are so many tents to choose from. We can narrow those choices down by ones that fit on a motorcycle or in a backpack and go from there! Yep, space and weight are the limiting factors so that rules canvas tents out. Nylon is a much better fabric for motorcycle camping. Tents designed for backpacking are ideal. Based on season and number of occupants, I own different tents. In the summer, I like a tent that's more mesh than nylon with a removable rain fly. In the winter, a tent with a vestibule is a must have for me. Considering how I use my tent mainly for sleeping; sitting or standing inside is pointless to me. If I required the luxury comforts of home I would not be motorcycle camping!
11. Full fledged touring bikes don't seem to have a bad wrap. Now if lane splitting is ever put to a vote in GA, I'll vote against it. It's already bad enough they weave in and out of traffic speeding recklessly as it is, lane splitting will only make it worse.
12. The only flaw with the current MC licensing system is a loose nut between the seat the the handle bars.
13. In running condition, yes, more than fair. I see Gen 1 bikes going for $2k easy. I just bought a 1999 Venture w/20k miles for $2,988 shipped. Looks like the front fender emblem was removed too.
14. Thank you everyone for the honest feedback I've been getting, be it pro or con. And no worries! I expected reconditioning would be necessary and I'll enjoy this project no matter the outcome. I still have 3 days upon receiving the bike to change my mind. Bike is on it's way from the NPA in California to the NPA in Atlanta, then to my house, so I'll post back in 2 weeks time with a video of the bike running! Any recommended member mechanics in the Atlanta area? So far it's been an easy but slow buying process. Rumbleon.com is a virtual dealership startup aimed at disrupting the used bike resell market backed by some big names who's stock went public last year and I'm curious how they'll do long term. http://q4live.s22.clientfiles.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com/172929361/files/doc_presentations/RumbleOn-FINAL-FINAL_v8.pdf
15. You do you. With that said; I always do these deals at a bank and never carry cash with me. If the seller won't agree to these terms prior to my visit then I move on to the next seller. I'm not asking too much. I meet the seller at their location to inspect. Their ID must match the name on the title. The VIN on the title must match the VIN on the bike. If we reach a deal I have the seller meet at a bank of their choosing. At the teller window I withdraw/convert my funds into cash and have the seller sign the title in front of me. The teller acts as escrow. The seller can walk out with the cash or deposit/convert the funds how ever they want. No funny business, strictly a cash exchange. I'll buy it if you don't! That's the deal of a life time! [h=2]$3000 23k miles[/h]2007 Yamaha Touring bike .
